Mario Camarena and Erick Hansel are best friend's who were able to make their childhood guitar dreams come true. This documentary follows the early days of CHON and how they got off the ground all the way up until their eventual end.
Hey everyone, I hope you can all enjoy this celebration of CHON's journey. This video was a major collaborative project and I am thankful for everyone who extended their grace and time to help me put over a decade's worth of information into a single video. Additionally, we hit 1000 subscribers in January. I'm going to be announcing a giveaway soon. If you want to participate follow me on Instagram: instagram.com/ben_seraphin/
I MISS THIS BAND SO FUCKING MUUUUUUUUUUUCH, I will always take the opportunity to say i skipped out on prom to go to their show by myself. I get so sad and nostalgic when I hear their music now, I feel like I grew up with them! I hope all of the are doing well 💕🫶🏾
Yes, I’m stoked to see what the future holds for all of them. I know this can be frustrating but there is so much more to what makes an individual happy. I think they are at a very important place in their lives. We should understand and support them all through this transition.
This band got me through some of the toughest points in my young adult life. And straight up just put me in a trance of happiness whenever i listen to them. I was so sad to hear that they’d be done as a band but hey, they left us with hours of magic to listen to forever. I’ll always hope for their return 🖤
Man… the feels. Been a CHON fan since 2009 or 2010. Found them on myspace before they had a facebook page. They really changed the course of my life. I could talk for HOURS about this band. So happy I got to see them live in LA in 2019. Only recently I realised that it was one of their last shows. Thank you for making this documentary, always felt like they needed a documentary. True guitar heros.
I was at that first tour with Animals as Leaders and CHON being the one's opening for the night absolutely blew me away. Immediately fell in love with their music and how they take insanely complicated and technical music, and made it sound so mellow and relaxing. Ended up going to 11 shows throughout their tours bringing a friend, girlfriend, or someone special just so they can experience this one of a kind music first hand. It was some of the best times of my life. Thanks CHON, Peace✌
Was at this tour also first experience. Hit me hard too. I was like who are these kids playing clean shred?!?! Changed my life forever . The whole line up did . CHON FOREVER
Thank you for taking the time to make this documentary. I saw Chon twice with AAL and once on the SCB tour with Polyphia. It still breaks my heart that'll they'll probably never make music together again or tour 😭😭
It is wild how much they predicted the change of genre amongst guitar instrumental driven music, they could have taken the easy metal route but they instead doubled down on a new sound. So glad we got to be around for the best 8 years of music in my life
Thanks for doing this man, awesome job. Chon has a huge place in music history. This will help ppl connect the dots🙌 I got to meet Mario & Eric at NAMM in Jan 2020 after they performed at the earthquaker booth. In hindsight it’s hard to believe that was one of their last public performances, time flies!
If you gotta go out, go out on your own terms. I’ve only known of these guys for 2-3 years, and while it sucks to hear this, it still feels complete. They did what they came to do. And, they’re all such beasts that I have a hard time imagining that there won’t be positive things coming from all of them in the future. Whether it’s CHON, or another incarnation of something else, I’d bet money it will still kick ass.
Just thank you for this, Ben. As a fan, this is a huge service for us. It’s a beautiful story. It has everything: the good beginning, the pleasant middle and the big and not so good finish for us. Despite CHON’s end, I really believe that Erick and Mario could revival the band in some future. Anyway, that was quite informative. So thank you for that! And keep doing the great stuff you always do! Cheers!
Absolutely love this. Chon essentially changed how I listened to music. Such an influential band for many of us I'm sure of that. Much love to these guys.
As much as I love CHON and to see the band come to an end, its individuals will continue to carry on the legacy through their works and sound. I am excited to see what each member will be working on and what it is that they’ll be releasing. It would have been nice for me to have seen them make a reemergence as a band since I got into CHON spring of 2023. Nevertheless, I am proud of their courage to make a transition that they felt was necessary. I am happy for them and I am looking forward to the new music. God bless them because they have been truly a monumental blessing to me and many others. ❤️🎶💫🏝️💖💞
Thanks for the vid! Ive kept coming back look in hopes of new chon for a long time now! They formed my musical tastes as an artist, theyhung out with fans when they werent on stage at concerts, ans to top it off in my mind, my friend accidentally got in their tourband (invited to be clear) during the homey tour and they played smash. They were just as chill as they acted, and introduced me to peeps like polyphia and tricot, hope they do ok in the future!
chon is my comfort band. their music helped me through the hardest period of my life and i regret not seeing them live on their 2nd super chon bros tour hope they can eventually reconnect with the project or at least make music on their own terms like eric has lately. thanks for making this video!
They just casually released a new Lo-Fi ep. It feels good to know that even if CHON is on a break, their members are still collaborating together to make good stuff
Good God, I think I have played their records on repeat so many times I can't even count 'em anymore. It's just so abnormally fucking good, I just keep getting back to all their albums. I literally googled "what happened to Chon" because their music is a like a goddamn drug to me. I just need more and more and more. Their music never fails to bring me back to my core, it often grounds me. Anyway, enough fanboying, keep on keeping on CHON!
This is a great video. I had no idea about the formation of the band. I wish they were still around. They played some of the best shows I've ever seen. Super Chon Bros 2 was a defining moment in my 20s
Great video 💯 Chon's legacy is very important, they inspired so many bands and presented a fresh new wave of instrumental music, best of luck to all the homies ❤
Love your service to the community with these videos brother! You did great! I'd love to see one on artists who didn't make it quite so young, like intervals, Guthrie Govan etc... That would be super cool if it makes sense and if you're up for it!
Beautiful video man, and really appreciated. Chon is one of my absolute favorite bands and watching this was so captivating for me. Reading Erick's words on their breakup really ruined February for me but hey, i just wish them all the best. I love their music and i know i'll love it for the rest of my life, it just makes me happy to listen to them. I hope they reunite once again someday and give us one last album. Bands reunite after years of disbanding all the time, it wouldn't be so far fetched to believe they will be back somehow eventually. Anyway, all my expectations and hype goes to Erick's new project. I love how it sounds from the snippets he's shared on Instagram
This is dope. CHON was life changing for me when i heard them for the first time about 10 years ago. Also, I remember people saying Erick was in TEHO as the drummer (?). He's definitely in the video in the group shots
Hurts so bad to see them go. I think it would have been a lot better if we had some warning but they just vanished into thin air. They were truly one of the best bands this generation will ever see.
the homeys were due to come play in the uk, but cancelled the show. then the show got a new date, but lockdown happened & it was cancelled again. then they went on hiatus. i don't think i'm ever gonna get over that.
Also anyone else just ficking devastated that eternity forever just dropped 4 bangers and disappeared? Don't come at me with gold necklace its not even close
My favorite band ever. Have both signature models and will never get rid of them. Love these guys to death and I'll always follow and support whatever they do. Much love to my fellow homeys. It was a good run bois
21:55 unfortunately they didnt get to play in Europe or the UK in 2019 because some of them were sick, and the shows were then rescheduled for april 2020, which of course got cancelled due to covid. had a ticket for both tours, but those never happened.. hopefully one day i'll be able to find the guys live, perhaps with another project.
People always talk about Tim Henson, but the truth is, mario and Erik, created a lot of the ideas he made famous on guitar.. Sure TIm is good, but he doesnt hold a candle to Mario and Erik... I hope they make music again in the future. They are missed.
Hella incorrect speculative shit, and when they talked about me a story was fabricated that somehow “an incident happened with me that I wasent able to go back to the camarena house even tho after that we went on to start the band chon after having a bunch of other bands together and doing other records under different band names such as “chasing shadows” when we were in middle school/high school. This is just poorly researched dribble of hearsay that he got wack from questionable sources, my guess is he just combed Reddit for “stories” and created this fiction. People are weird and wanna act like they know shit about their fav band. Pretty sure this guy could get sued for liable or slander for what he’s said about me that is a lie. Hey, take mention of me out of your documentary if that’s how you are going to spin it, or I’ll email you some shit off Google that looks official saying to cease and desist to make it look like I am considering pressing legal charges.
