The Christchurch Earthquakes 

I actually saved my dad from dieing in the ctv building. On that day he was posted to be recording something in that building but i was sick on that day (i was a baby still) so i am grateful for my dad still being alive

Japanese rescue teams arrived too and were still here when the devastating earthquake and tsunami struck Japan.

In the middle of all this devastation was one really remarkable story of resilience. The junior women’s gymnastics team had their gym destroyed in the quake, but refused to give up. They worked with several others to restore the gym to a usable condition and kept training. They came to the US and competed in the Pacific Rim championships in 2012 and one of them (Courtney McGreggor) qualified for the London Olympics!

My partner was in NZ at the time. She had pictures she had taken on the coastal road prior, and after the quakes. Some were unrecognisable. One where you could see about 100m of new rock bed “beach” where previously the sea had almost met the base of the road. And she spoke so highly of the kiwi resilience and spirit, communities coming together to make shipping container shops etc so life could continue while rebuilding. I hope one day to visit in her memory. Thanks for the video, your channel has a great future!

Christchurch was my home for 2 years, this left me so defeated. One of the most beautiful cities I've ever lived in and filled with the kindest human beings you will ever find.

The footage supposedly showing a traffic jam of cars "fleeing the city" is actually normal morning peak traffic heading INTO Christchurch on the Northern Motorway at the Ohoka Rd on-ramp in Kaiapoi 😄

I had been in the city for about an hour, sipping coffee in my cousin's home not too far from the airport where I had recently landed, when the quake hit. This was my first (and only) visit to NZ, and I was there to see some distant relations for the first time. We were chatting when suddenly the room started shaking, things fell off the shelves, and my cousin went to catch some breakables while we waited for it to stop. It went on for what seemed about a minute or so, then we took stock as it died down. Some broken things and doors out of alignment, but since the house was modern and built to code, there wasn't too much damage. We were fairly far from the epicenter. Then we went outside to take a look. Huge piles of silt had come up from below due to liquefaction, and some outside walls of homes were damaged, but it wasn't too bad. No power or water. I seem to remember we got power back fairly quickly, but it took a couple of days to get water again. We heard downtown was in very bad shape and cordoned off. The interesting thing is that I arrived a day late due to some hooey from United Airlines which stranded me in LA overnight. Had I arrived on time, it's likely I would have been in that very cathedral when the quake hit. I have an old photo of my great-grandmother taken outside the building, so naturally I wanted to see it. Maybe United saved my life!

I remember rows and rows of cars driving from Christchurch into Blenheim on the main road with their cars packed to the roof, getting their families away from Christchurch to be safe. I love to visit Christchurch but it took me a while to go back. Love to visit again now. Great channel!

I remember the brick chimney collapsing through the roof of my house during the first quake, it broke right through and sounded like a truck had hit the house. The second one was a different beast, I remember being parked on the roadside getting lunch and seeing the road move like a snake, a chunk of concrete literally popped out of the curb and jumped about 2 meters high in the air right in front of us. We had to walk back to our job site to retrieve our tools, walking across the Waimairi golf course which had developed several ponds as a result of the liquefaction. The new house I was installing balustrade on was pretty much broken in half, the concrete slab foundation had risen in the middle and the house had split open. 5 hours to drive home through flooded and destroyed streets, a trip which usually took 30-40 mins. Unforgettable experience

I lost my home and had to move four times. The impact on my mental and physical health is difficult to quantify. I have gone from being a confident, motivated and creative person to something quite the opposite. I have put on significant weight, am unable to ride a bike, walk more than a few metres, can no longer play guitar or keyboard, and am living with PTSD, agoraphobia, to name just two mental health issues. But y'know what? I'm alive and although things peaked at their worst around a decade ago, I do believe there's light at the end of the tunnel. I still can't quite believe the impact the quakes have had on me.

I'm here right now on a holiday and it's so nice, I walked around the city, loved the vibes, the action and the restaurants are so amazing. It has definitely modernised since the earthquake and it has such a bright future.

i live in christchurch. it was lunchtime at school when the february one happened. i had just walked back into class, our teacher had a rule that we had to put our shoes in the cloak bay by our shoes if we wanted to take them off so they weren’t a trip hazard. right as i opened the door. only a few of us were inside the class at the time, one of my friends grabbed my hand and pulled me under the desk because i was too scared to move. i was only seven then. i still have ptsd from those earthquakes. i was alseep during the september one, along with my siblings. we lived close to a train track, so when my mum didn’t hear us screaming she thought the shaking was a train derailing and coming through our bedroom and killing us. i didn’t know what an earthquake was so when i woke up and felt the aftershocks i thought it was robbers trying to break in lol.

I spent a month in Christchurch in January/February of this year. It was my first visit to New Zealand, and I came to truly love the beautiful country in the month I was there. I miss it every day and I can't wait to go back

Glad to see Christchurch has pretty well recovered, although that was a bad one between the liquefaction, rebound effect from the hills, and your ancestors not knowing that brick and masonry wouldn't hold up in a strong temblor. I really feel for you guys and for everyone who got hit by collapses. I'm impressed Christchurch decided to rebuild your cathedral; I see they're giving it the works with base isolators and a steel frame, which sounds expensive but is going to be a tribute to Kiwi stubbornness and engineering when it's done. Living in southern California, been through a couple 7.2s at 50-60 miles away and a 5.4 at thirty miles, but I'm still waiting to see how well I come through a big one. Hopefully my wood frame condo will hang together. :P

We were in Christchurch - Prebbleton - for the first earthquake. It was our granddaughter's 9th birthday and at 4:36 AM we went from deep sleep to full Red Alert, with the house booming and shaking. We adults scattered to the different children's bedrooms and waited it out. The power went out for most of the day, but the kitchen ran on gas, so we were able to cook up for breakfast, instead of peaches and weetbix. The house was new, built to earthquake standards, and the only casualty was a bedroom TV that did a face plant on the floor. There were aftershocks all day and the dog stayed very close to us. Baby granddaughter (18 months) got the message very quickly and when an aftershock struck she was always the first under a door, but by mid-afternoon, she had had enough ("Me room wobbles!"). The birthday party went ahead the next day and when we left to come home we thanked the birthday girl for a party we were never going to forget. She said it had been a real "shaker and mover". Five months later, the big one hit while our Christchurch family was visiting us in Oamaru, 250 km south of Christchurch. At 10 to I PM we felt the house start moving and the chandelier started swaying and clinking. Wth all the aftershocks that were still plaguing Christchurch, that made the city high up the list of usual suspects. Our son-in-law got on the phone to his brothers in Christchurch and when he heard what had happened, they packed and hit the road home immediately. Their house came through this one unharmed but that was the only good news from this terrible event. In later years, on one trip to Christchurch, we visited the Earthquake Memorial on the Avon. Very sad.

The fact that I lived through this but have 0 memory of it is just… amazing…

my friend moved from Christchurch to waikato but she as a suvivor had broken her back and recurring injuries during this quake. NZ government refused to give her a wheelchair it took 12 denials until she got accepted only this year so 10-11 years she had to wait😳

I thought you might have included the devastation that occurred in Kaiapoi in September 2010.

I recall seeing some absolutely shocking images on the live TV broadcasts in the immediate aftermath of the big quake that destroyed the cathedral. Those images were never shown again to the public. A real tragedy.

I remember this when I was 10 years of age based in Dunedin, IT was still very strong way down South, didn't even know what an earthquake was. My mum made sure we were safe and thankfully my family that lived up in Christchurch were safe also.

06:01 In the RH bottom corner, the multi-coloured area is the "Restart Mall", set up in Cashel Street to replace the destroyed shops. Shipping containers were brought in, modified and painted up to make shops and cafes to bring people back into the city center and it worked. On two trips that we made to Christchurch after the earthquake, we visited the mall and there were crowds out and about each time. The City council turned nearby vacant sites in to cheap car parks, so, for a change, there was no trouble with parking. The containers were only a temporary measure until Cashel Street could be rebuilt, but they were bright and cheerful - and optimistic. 06:33 Cashel Street today. Some of the container shops were later moved to Kaikoura and placed in the vacant lot left after the old hotel was destroyed in the Kaikoura earthquake.

i was 50m from that bus. had no idea. the dust from falling buildings was up so much we couldnt see down that way towards it. my mate, bout 3 days later started bleeding from his nose. out his eyes and from his eyes...he breathed in too much fine concrete dust putting tiny scratches high up in his nose. pretty bad but to watch but not life threatening or anything....was a crazy crazy few days. tea spoon of water out the ocean to whats coming though. we are well overdue for a much much larger quake that'll do christchurch 2011 on a national scale. ive got my 1 month survival kit ready and a solid plan to be self sufficient for my family. i cant recommend strongly enough everyone soith of palmeston north also prepare for it

I remember watching the live footage of the aftermath here in Australia. There was coverage of a woman stuck on top of a building, which I think was the CTV building but I could be wrong? They were worried about getting to her before the building collapsed, inside the building was unsafe/inaccessible. They often flicked to the fallen spire of the cathedral and the cronked floors of the Hotel Grand Chancellor and wondering about the people inside and if THAT would collapse.

The sounds of car alarms takes me back to the chch earthquakes, was crazy times man, depsite the chaos and despair, communities came together to support or give a hand to eachother, it was truly some hard times, but we carry on! RIP uso Jeff Sanft and to the others that lost there lives in earthquake :( never forgotten..

Christchurch was my home with my daughter and then husband from 2004 until me and my daughter left for good in August 2011 after discovering that my husband was having an affair with someone I worked with! Anyway, that's a very long time ago now but, those earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 changed the course of my whole life in a big way. We survived, which I'm thankful for, our house was single story and suffered only minor damage, I worked at Woolston School at the time and some of the children were so upset and displaced and really needed support and reassurance, it was such a hard time after the quakes as liquifaction caused huge problems and fresh water and sewage were damaged - if I remember rightly, there was a chap who lived in our suburb who had a well on his land and he was happy to share the fresh water (had to boil obviously) with local residents, the relentless aftershocks were awful and very scary, seeing this footage brings back very mixed emotions, I loved my life in Christchurch but my daughter who was 11 at the time wanted to go back to the UK to be with her extended family (grandparents, cousins etc) so we came back. I will never forget the overwhelming feeling of vulnerability and fright at feeling the earth beneath my feet moving so violently that we couldn't stand, rescuing my daughter from ChCh intermediate school after the 2011 quake and trying to run to her bedroom during the early hours of the quake in 2010 feeling the walls wobble like jelly and the ground bouncing up and down as though it was the ocean waves. Before the quakes Christchurch was a beautiful city with many beautiful people who I called my friends, I'm sure the city is well on its way to being what it once was and I hope to return one day and bring my husband along to show him where I used to live. This scared me so much. My cousins place was uninhabitable but they were ok, another cousin who was pregnant got thrown across the room and my aunt's place was almost destroyed when the chimney came down in the middle of their house.

I live around 30 minutes away from the city centre,And each time I visit the city centre,I always see the half-broken cathedral and the newly built convention centre standing near it,the progress on the repairs of the cathedral is going well by the looks of things.

My cousin in Belgium just happened to be in New Zealand on a tour when the quake happened. Since he happened to be a newscaster at the Antwerp radiostation, he called in an eyewitness report.

I was 5 at the time, sitting alone on the floor in my bedroom playing with lego, oblivious to what was going to happen, and then the shaking started. I'm lucky the bunk beds and dresser I was sitting next to didn't hit me as they collapsed, and the next thing I heard was my mum burst through my door asking if I was OK. I'm just glad my family were unaffected by the earthquakes overall.

I was about 2 or 1 at the time, My parents had told me I had slept through the whole thing on the 1st quake but they took me out of my cot and they went under the door frames in the kitchen while my father went into the garage and got a torch which was a very bad idea looking back since my garage is full of junk on high shelves. On the 2nd quake, my father was looking after me while my mum was at school teaching, I was right under a speaker while my dad was getting ready to drop off his bike in town, luckily when the quake strikes, the speaker landed right next to me. My father was outside in my front lawn with the pram and bike. He went to grab me while my mother at to stay at work to gather the kids in the field, my father and myself was in the front lawn waiting fro my mother to come back home and after that there we very big aftershocks in the night but we were safe and our little home was safe aswell but did need some work doing to it.

Both my brothers were in Christchurch for the quakes. After the second one, I thought they were nuts for staying in the city! My older brother had cracks open up in his house and he ended up moving. One of the big problems was liquifaction, where muddy water springs up from underground turning grassy areas into swamps. I last noticed an earthquake about a week ago (August eighth, 4.4 Richter). There are small ones every day, because NZ sits right on the meeting point of two tectonic plates. It's only a matter of time until the next "big one" that makes the ChCh quakes look insignificant.

I visited the church and climbed up the tower. I think it was the most beautiful part of the city.

Can you confirm the number of people who died in the Pyne Gould building, 18? , I was a member of the UK international Search and Rescue team, who were tasked to this building and we recovered only 13 casualties.

Don't underestimate how horrible this truly was. We had been told all our lives that Christchurch (Chch) did not have earthquakes. We lost our gorgeous buildings.

Bloody aweful. Good to see the newer chritchurch coming back to life. Unfortunately when the alpine fault or hikaurangi fault goes (9+), then it will be much broader impact. The last i read, the 600km alpine fault has an 80% chance of moving 10m in 4minutes within the next 50years. That will be a 9+ quake for sure.

We watched a House Hunters International episode yesterday, and a family from the west coast, USA, moved to the rebuilt Christchurch. My first comment to my wife was about the earthquakes there. Were they aware? Anyway, New Zealand's a beautiful country.

I live a couple hour's drive away on that day in Feb 2011, it was a half-day at my school that day, I think because it was a teachers-only day. I was walking with my friend to her house when the earthquake happened. Somehow we didnt notice it because we were busy walking and chatting, not paying attention to our surroundings. We get to her house and my friends mum comes up to us, looking a bit panicked, asking us if we felt that massive earthquake. We both just sort of laughed because its NZ and we're used to earthquakes. We weren't old enough to have experienced an especially dangerous quake yet. We turned the TV on. Every channel was a live broadcast of the cathedral's steeple crumbling. We had no idea this meant that for the next few months, the ground would be rattling and swaying sporadically. Also no this was not caused by a fucking energy weapon. Reality is not constructed by some elaborate scheme straight out of a Tom Clancy novel. Please remember to take your antipsychotics.

Can't help but think that the Sept 4 2010 earthquake caused underlying structural and foundational damage that the closer and shallower Feb 2011 earthquake magnified before reparations could be made.

According to the whistleblower at the US National Press Club, yesterday, June 12, 2023, (held by Dr. Steven Greer) there is an ice neutrino collecting station in Antarctica, I think he said, that caused one of Christchurch’s big earthquakes. I hope New Zealand’s government and people do something to address that.
