I’m pretty sure the selling point for people here was the possibility of seeing Mario Lopez in handcuffs. It’s pretty much the reason Cheri Caffaro had a career...... FAN SERVICE!
Especially since there's no such thing as "not pressing charges," you can't escape jail by convincing your victims that your crimes aren't really that bad, that would be a huge and easily exploited loophole.
That first line of the trailer for this movie just left me flabbergasted. "She's holding him hostage, but he's stealing her heart"... oh my god that line is terrible!
This film taught me an important lesson. If you want someone to love you forever just kidnap them. Unfortunately the person I kidnapped didn't see it that way, or the cops who arrested me, or the District Attorney.
Everyone he desperately asks for help thinking it's a joke or threatening to shoot him is legitimately terrifying. Even his girlfriend only believed him after he said he was going to propose.
Ok, I hate to keep harping on this but my God, if it was the other way around, this wouldn't be funny in the slightest (probably would be a Lifetime movie). Why does Hollywood downplay female-on-male violence to the point where it's seen as comedic? It's not funny, it's not quirky, it's not "lucky", it's disturbing. I've seen it happen in real life and the trauma is real. It's irritating and downright offensive and it makes me sick... But that out of the way, I love this review 💟 Great job as always!
Mirani Kawanapu cause women dont do ANYTHING WRONG or break the law RIGHT RIGHT. Only MEN break the law hahaha. I was being sarcastic if you didnt notice.
Female on male violence CAN be comedic. For that matter male on female violence can be comedic too. It's all in the execution. The problem with this movie isn't the basic premise or the gender roles, it's just that the movie is too lightweight and fluffy to embrace the dark humor that could have made the premise work. Imagine if this was done with a tone more like an "It's Always Sunny..." episode. In fact some users have pointed out that a comedy exists with a VERY similar premise with the gender roles reversed called Buffalo '66. I've never seen it but it is apparently well liked.
You know the last time I kidnapped a woman and held her against her will, we eventually got married. Now we have a couple of kids, and shes gone for a pack of smokes. Oh wait, I hear a siren coming up the street. OH SHIT!
Hey, we shouldn't be shocked at this point. Think of Mr. Wrong, Overboard, and While You Were Sleeping. Rom coms love making kidnapping, lies, and stalking look wacky and charming.
I’ll give a pass to While You We’re Sleeping because that was more of a misunderstanding on the unconscious man’s family side and Sandra Bullock’s character had no family and was lonely and wanted to feel some sense of family.
I would say Holiday in Handcuffs got me hooked on watching christmas tv movies. I still love watching them a decade later. This one is still one of my favorites as its kind of dirty in its humor, a surprise since it was on ABC Family.
They did the gender reverse version of the 'romantic kidnapping' scenario back in the 70s. It was called "Sweet Hostage", starring Linda Blair and Martin Sheen. It's... incredibly questionable. I only bring this up because it was a favorite of my mother's back in high school, and when she saw the promo for Holiday in Handcuffs she went "So it's a 'Sweet Hostage' Christmas? Oh, man, I've got to see this..." We both deeply regretted her enthusiasm.
Tbh, I've found that whenever people say "imagine if the genders were switched"... there's always some example of media in which the genders were switched and despite that, no one realized how ill-advised it was (although "Sweet Hostage" did take place back in the 70s, at least).
Oh my gosh, Allison you kill me sometimes, and that compiled scene of why are you hitting yourself and the gun shot I laughed so hard. I love your show.
This movie has been etched into my brain from now on. My best friend made me watch it with her, and at the time (4 years ago!) we started to become friends so I would entice her to show me her weird fascination that she had (and still has) for Christmas movies around the holidays. We watched it on netflixs and honestly it was so boring, a movie to entertain yourself when you're bored. But for some reason just the thought of the movie pops in my brain as the best bonding that made us best friends. We even mock the end by saying, "Omg he didn't press charges!" to this day. So yeah an odd film, but one that stay with you for some weird reason?
I've been a fan for a few years now but man has she been really killing it recently. I have absolutely loved all these Movie Night videos recently. Keep up the amazing work.
I don’t think so. Kirk Cameron had that one movie where he literally drugs and kidnaps two kids and he actually turns the black kid into a literal slave and somehow got away with it. The DVD cover said it would become a holiday classic. That movie was made in 1991 and still not a classic
At least in "Mr. Wrong" she didn't actually end up with the people who stalked/drugged/kidnapped her ... she ended up with the other guy who was also creepy, but at least didn't go that far, I guess?
I actually enjoyed the movie at first because I thought it was trying something different with some dark humour but then Slater started to fall for Sabrina and then it just annoyed me. Also why is it in our media everyone wants to be wealthy but then the wealthy are portrayed to be obnoxious? That's just confusing
When I saw that hat, I stopped moving entirely (was rolling a cigarette) and just stared at the screen with wide eyes and raised eyebrows for quite a while.
This is definitely a Canadian-made movie. The actor who played Trudy's boyfriend was in a show called jPod, and the actress who played David's fiance was one of the leads in the show Corner Gas.
I remember hearing once that if you’ve seen a Canadian actor in something, you’ve seen them on something else. Also, apparently ever Canadian actor ever has been on Degrassi.
No, it's American-made; they just filmed in Vancouver - like 90% of films and TV shows in the past couple of decades. Canadian-made implies it was made in Canada, _by_ Canadians like _Da Vinci's Inquest_
9:25 Oh my god, it's Gabrielle Miller from _Corner Gas!_ Man, _this_ was one of her film roles? Heheh, now I have a new bit of trivia to annoy the hell out of my Canadian friends and relatives
Isn't the plot of this basically a gender-swap of that Buffalo '66 movie? Also, Jesus Christ, she loaded that flintlock pistol? why would she do that unless she was actually prepared to shoot him?
and also those movies tend to be really bland and cut and paste and not forgetting the actors do a lackluster job with what their given (which is very little).
The God's Not Dead movies are too hilarious and ridiculous to be forgotten. A smiling African stereotype saying "Today is a good day". after just seeing some guy die in the street cannot be unseen.
Alison, I think you're being very close-minded about relationships with physical-restraints. That's how I met the lady who later testified against me in court. Can't wait to see her again in 25 to life.
"This sucks." - that was not a line in the script, that was Mario Lopez actually voicing his thoughts on this movie and being in it and they left it in anyway.
Olin Moore I don't think the movie even goes far enough with her justification for kidnapping him. This is a great premise for dark humour, but the movies tone is too "safe" for that.
When melissa johne heart was still relavant. Until she started doing tv movies and then in recent years gods not dead 2. Owe wow i didnt realise AC slater from saved by the bell is in this.
You should review the 80s TV movie, Moving Target, starring Jason Bateman. It was his second film and actually not horrible. It's about his character coming home from camp to find his family has moved without leaving a new address.
God I JUST watched this with my mom and best friend who assured me this movie was adorable lol i was horrified and grossed out the whole time. What a dumb cheesy movie
Alteration: she catches him trying to rob her, mistaken by someone she knows as a couple, "I thought for sure you were alone again; I worry about you" condescension, blackmail, everyone is nutty
The most believable thing about this movie is how Mario Lopez is acting to the fact he’s been kidnapped and held captive over Christmas or at least until the Stockholm Syndrome had set in.
I used to work at a gas station, and you kinda...learn not to get involved. I almost got assaulted because the pumps didn't initially take debit. people are fucking horrible. Though if someone asked me to call the police for them I would help.
alejandromolinac Doesn't matter to me if she's a terrible person. Nobody deserves what Kurt does to her. It's not romantic to me, it's creepy and gross. I've seen the movie three times and my opinion on it is pretty well-informed.
