Brings back memories of my time at Otago University. I wasn’t involved in the party scene or flatting but they attracted lots of unwanted media attention and commentary. For many undergraduates, this is the first time they can live without parental oversight. The idea is that they can all have fun and rebel for a period of their lives. Sometimes it can come back to bite people as Sam Uffindel the National MP learnt the hard way.

Bars wouldn't do shit, Hamilton has an entire generation of pill addicts no older than 18.. NZ has a culture that promotes being a fxckwit, having designated places for fuckwitism won't change the peer pressure and binge drinking culture that exists and is almost seen as a right of passage in this country.
These videos are awesome, it's cool to see you guys getting out and documenting this stuff. Reminds me of Channel 5 at its peak, and the presenter's deadpan delivery lets all the interesting people he interviews shine a lot. Super cool.
@@Lvl3NPC oh right I getcha bro, yeah nah I agree All Gas No Brakes aside from a couple videos definitely leaned heavily into a more comedy format like these guys are, rather than the half serious half comedic tone Channel 5 leans into more now. Plus they have a bigger budget with Channel 5 now it seems. Andrew's content though is at its prime at the moment though I reckon with the current Channel 5 stuff, real good.

I stayed the night at a mates house on the weekend very near here, and bro it was literally impossible to sleep. There were 5 people who got up on the roof of the house next to us and blared music for a couple of hours until the cops told them they couldn’t stay there bc it wasn’t their house 😭
A lot of my family and friends went to university in Christchurch and Dunedin, got degrees they don't use or outright failed, got into debt they're still paying off, I knew I wouldn't be good at uni as I'd drink like these kids and not apply myself to any of the lessons, so I Joined the military, still did a lot of drinking but I got paid and went all over the place. I'm not saying that higher education is pointless, far from it, I think it's important to know yourself and have a clear image of what you want to do with your future, so young people please just have a think about what you want to do, and if you don't need to put yourself in massive debt, don't. Be a trailblazer and don't do things just because everyone else has told you this is what you have to do. If that makes sense
I lived in Dunedin 2 years ago. For 3 years. In Waverley. What I can say is I never saw the students unless I went to the CBD. Like, ever. Where I lived was truly beautiful. Half that city is.
So they party like idiots, but also don't clean up after themselves? Damn. I get that you're only young once but if you can go flatting like an adult, you can clean up your own mess like adults

It was never this bad in the late 80’s early 90’s when I was at Otago. We had great pubs to go to: Cook, Gardies, Bowler, Ori, Cactus Jacks, Robbie Burns, etc, places where students could drink as much as they liked but the minute they went mental the bouncers kicked them out. It was great. It was affordable, though, which is a big difference.
This sort of report coverage is out of the norm, which is unique and what I prefer... It's like a mix of Paddy Gower, Gen Z and Kiwi ingenuity. Keep it up
Not much has changed over the generations except they are getting lazier. I'm in my 30s, did the same shit back in my teens in the same place, but we helped at least clean the streets afterwards, the houses, were always a dump but having enough people complain about broken glass puncturing tyres n shit on the weekly you end up just cleaning up after yourself. It's a life lesson.
@@TheMusicalKnokcersthe locals in that area are students, so they don’t typically care and move away once they’re done in uni. You don’t really have to go through Castle St often anyway.
I was there from 1987 to 1991 and it seems to have not changed in the slightest. Except there was probably a bit more violence in the old days. These kids seem more friendly and nice.
Party life has always been wicked in dunners but i remember years ago flats used to clean up after themselves so conditions were all goods, and the party life was still there and tbh better than it is nowdays haha
@@9G0D bruh I'm 21 and attend uni, I used to live on north leith street and there were some disgusting drive ways with rubbish bags piled up and often end up torn open leaving shit all on the place.
I think something that needs to be said is that there is absolutely no chance of being able to go out as a student to a venue in NZ. Piss at a bar here is egregious so your only option is to either smash a box before you hit town or to just throw house parties. Why go out when its so expensive when you can just get your mates around
You’d make a fucking mint as a landlord, students who want to flat there probably don’t care if the flat is a bit of shithole, and Dunedin flats are already pretty terrible, so you just do the bare minimum and make bank off the guaranteed tenancies the next year.

I work for the uni, literally on this street. Everything from us, to the botanical gardens (3-4 blocks) is either uni owned student accomodation/office space, or privately owned student flats. Well, and a uni owned Daycare, but that's on the block before it gets really rough. If you don't want to deal with that lifestyle, you just don't live in the student area. Campus Watch are usually pretty good at looking out for students and staff so I've never felt unsafe in the area.
Gotta admit growing up in NZ as a teenager was Fucking EPIC. Rageing! Total freedom, pillaging and mass destruction. ........ .now, ....or even after you're 20 years old...not so much.
