Mark Hamill plays a young man who's father abandoned him as a child and he has always focused his hate on a country singer played by real life singer Jimmy Dean. He actually thinks Dean is his REAL father. Hamill tracks Dean down and tries to kill him. Meanwhile, Robert Forster and Don Johnson are the cops hot on his trail. This is one of many 70s TV appearances by Hamill and one of his best performances. It's hard to say if he filmed this movie before or after Star Wars since they came out at around the same time. This movie was supposedly the pilot for Quinn Martin's Tales of the Unexpected TV series. The theme music was different but William Conrad's narration was used. This narration definitely added a certain quality to the series.

This was shot right after Mark shot Star Wars in March 1976. This film was made summer of 1976 (August and September).

Prior to Star Wars, Mark Hamill was known for playing villians, troubled teens or someone who had a few loose screws. Ironically, he went back to playing villians in his voice acting roles.

@Jaeger19Ultima True, though I think Mark excels more as a "comic book" villain. He's done documentaries on how he gets into character and being that it's a "vocal only" performance, he's able to go over-the-top and totally concentrate on the character. Still, his recent appearances as "The Trixter" in The Flash series have shown that he can also do a good comic villain on-screen as Well!

This is a good film, and a now a great example of the typical 1970's television police film. Violence in it (by today's standards) is minimal, and shows how a high quality story and acting are what get a story across instead of shock effect. Mark Hamill was very convincing as a deeply troubled youth. So was Don Johnson as an exceptionally level headed rookie cop, and Steve Forster as his experienced partner who is starting to let himself slip into a place of losing his head. Great tackle of Hamill by Johnson at the end. Don Johnson's character was much more restrained than Sonny Crockett would be in the 1980's. Well worth watching.

Made for TV is not my thing, normally only watch first minute or so and switch over if its crap, but this had a good hook and good acting, no plot loopholes. I was actually impressed by mark Hamill's acting.

One reason that this was a very good movie indeed, is perhaps the touches of reality, from the officer with a very bad cold, to the chatty delighted passenger on the sight-seeing bus. This is perhaps a trivial thing, but it lends the film a rare blend of humour and reality which is very convincing. Mr. Hamill is as has been noted very good in this. Thank you for uploading.

I like how they just walk away from the second attack scene without securing the gun or seeming at all concerned anyone could take it. Also, in the days before cell phones, all you can do in a crisis in a public place in a crisis is yell for "someone" to call for help.

I think the shopping mall that the police stage at 57:10 is located at the intersection of Cherry Ave and Baseline Ave in Fontana, CA. In the background of the video you can see the Italian restaurant Graziano's - it is still there 40 years later. (7426 Cherry Ave)

Outstanding performance by Mark Hamill! It's as if Luke Skywalker from A New Hope flew into a black hole via hyperspace and it spat him out into L.A. and the experience left him deranged. On edit: I finally watched it through the end and the character Mark played had it really rough ever since he was a baby! :'(

Within a few minutes - and being a Quinn Martin production - its pretty easy to sense this was a pilot. As for Hamill, he had probably finished shooting you-know-what some months before in 1976 and then knocked this gig off in a matter of weeks upon his return from London (the date under the title is 1976). Online info says this film aired on January 12, 1977. There's no way Hamill could have known that the work he had just done for Lucas would, well...need I say more (As Suzanne Sommers related when she walked on to the set of Lucas' prior 'bomb' American Graffiti, her first thought was 'What a bunch of losers.' Oops) . Refreshing to see him in a more serious role; I think many people have a misconception his 'gee whiz' approach to Mr. Skywalker is all his range could offer. Just to be clear - I was using 'bomb' fececiously.

"Use the wrench, Luke" ...if you freeze it at 3:20 and zoom on Mark Hamill's eyes, it looks like he's got shapeshifts in BOTH his eyes just before he becomes violent. The actor was using his BioDigital shapeshifting ability to subliminally convey the deranged nature of his character. And look at his eye between 7:27 and 7:32! That is WEIRD LOOKIN'. 21:38 his left eye...Lukie Streetwalker be going NUTS with his shapeshifting eyeballs in this movie! 39:27 exactly as they cut to him he's sporting a ridiculous clown slit. 40:56 Hamill's always subtle acting talent is complemented by his subtle shapeshifting (sarcasm). 41:20 is just...absurd. 41:27...
