The Civil War Battle Series: The Road to Appomattox 

What a beautiful rendition of the battle hymn of the republic!

I had two Gr-Gr-Grandpa's fighting in the Civil War. On my mothers side my gr-gr-grandpa was in the 2nd Appomattox Virginia Raiders under Gen. Fitzhugh Lee. Actually his family farm was about 1/4 of a mile behind the McClean home through the woods!!!. On my fathers side my Gr-Gr-Grandpa was in the 7th New Jersey Vol Infantry. They both were fighting at Gettysburg Pa. But luckily they were about 3 miles from each other. My Calvary grandpa was on the east side of Gettysburg fighting against Gen. Custer! And my Union Grandpa was in the fighting in the Peach Orchard! I was able to find both of their monuments and felt with tears of what they must have seen and felt!. My southern Grandpa when he surrendered I didn't see that he got a parole paper. Because he didn't need one. All he did was get on his horse and rode that rabbit trial through those woods to his family farm only a 1/4 mile away. They both had seen enough! It was time to bring our country back into focus for the true cause of our Union together because we were going to need that later as we faced other enemies of our American flag!. I Love and respect both of my Gr-Gr-Grandpa's! I have even framed my discharge and mustering out papers of my Union Grandpa! Love it!!!

When I was a child,.I did a school report on Appomattox. I had never heard the word before and I pronounced it "uh- poe- muh- tox" .the class laughed at me. I am 47 now..scarred for life.

This guy reminds me of a girl I met at the club one night. She looked so good in that dim lighting, and dancing in front of the strobe light. Plus I had been drinking. She was a perfect 10. Then I woke up next to her in her bed the next morning with that clear morning sunlight shining on her face, and she looked at me and said "Calvary", when she meant "cavalry". I realized then what a horrible mistake I had made.

After seeing what's at the front I'd be in the band too.

It's these glimpses into otherwise not well known subjects that I enjoy.

Mr and Mrs Grant were supposed to go to the theatre but Mrs Grant thought Mary Lincoln was such a disagreeable person they declined

My great great grandfather fought in the 61st Virginia and was paroled at Appomattox .

It never occurred to me that Unconditional Surrender Grant gave very light Surrender terms to Lee..... that shows how Important that Surrender was to Grant. On the Other hand, Commanders know when to quit. It took long enough for Lee to do so, but he did. Tat is a view lost in 20th and 21st century.

The singing at the very end... would be perfect played in a haunted house, or outside your house on Halloween to terrify the trick-or-treat kids, or to induce vomiting if you swallow poison, or to run the rats out of the immediate area. I want to buy the CD and give it to my nasty neighbor.

Great series, have enjoyed listening to the lectures a lot and it has helped me a lot with understanding the Civil War a lot more. In saying that I have a question. I have noticed in most of the series that Dr DePue constantly mentions how many regiments are from Illinois, and I am curious as to why he points that out? Being from Australia, not sure where they are from makes it overly relevant in the context of battle. Thanks

After listening to most of the series over the past week, “Glory, Glory” hit me hard. So sad. The confederates did all they could and are the type of honorable men (though the union was just as honorable) America needs now.

Appomattox should have never happened. From late July 3rd Gen.Mead should have persued Lee's army of Northern Virginia killing and capturing as many as possible. Those not killed or wounded could care for their own in a camp like Andersonville.

I want to make one point just one Slavery was an American Problem not just a Southern Problem, We are taught in school that the south alone was responsible for slavery and that just is not true, Slavery existed in this country before we even had a country, We should have freed everyone in the first revolution but we did not that is why I personally believe that it was a National problem and not just a southern one Lincoln himself said if he could keep the Union together without freeing the slaves he would do it.
