Amlo has been fuming about El Mayo getting snatched by the gringos 😂 he's more offended by Mexican sovereignty being made a mockery while he ignores a massive drug war.

The Sinaloa Cartel sounds a lot like the Sicilian Mafia in the old days. Both are organized crime groups who were well integrated into their communities. The Sicilian gangsters usually had links with local government, police and general society based upon corruption sometimes or, far more often, on non-agression understandings based upon agreed red lines. When I was young growing up in a predominantly Sicilian US town, we all knew who the Mafia linked people were and often socialized with them. It was quite safe as long as you did not "do business" with them or ask for special favors. People forget that Al Capone wielded real political power in Chicago as a local community leader as well as being the "godfather" of local criminal activities. Things work in an "organized" fashion...until they don't. Usually, when greed, infighting and generational change breaks down the criminal organization's mores and discipline. Watch any Martin Scorsese film. He may have been a seminary boy, but he grew up among the wiseguys in NYC. Can one say that Sinaloa's breakdown will make things better or worse? Hard to say, but they certainly will make things clearer as people tend to fear and avoid socializing with warring gangsters and, in response, the gangsters have to resort more to violence and corruption to manage threats in the local community.

Funny to see Peter warn people about higher drug prices.

It's amazing that we don't here about this right next door in The US.

Problems in drug distribution lines are a good thing. Still, the more important question remains: how can Americans be weaned off drug use (including legal ones)?

It's worth remembering that anyone who puts so much as a single line of coke up their nose is directly financing this carnage (both in Mexico and elsewhere).

One of the main takeaways I get from this is that when you criminalize drugs, then criminals will be in charge of drugs.

The irony of the consumption (demand) in the U.S. is that if this was a poor-people problem, the government would squash it. But it's a problem across all income brackets, if someone poisoned the supply, everyone would be very surprised who dropped dead. I find it very hard to feel sympathy for drug abusers, they made their choice(s). So, those that distribute continue to cash in on those who are too undisciplined to avoid drug use, continues.

To replace the money lost by the end of transatlantic slave trade the British turned to their Indian colony and the export of opium from India to China. The British forced a weakened China to sign a treaty that included a provision that any British person caught smuggling opium would not be prosecuted under Chinese law, and instead would be tried under British law. Of course, the British would never prosecute anyone for smuggling opium because the government supported the illicit trade. If you bring up the British opium trade and opium wars with China no one will blame the Chinese because so many of its people were addicted to opium, and people rightly blame the British. Mexico has had it's own version of the opium war against the US for many decades, and many elements of the Mexican government are in cahoots with the drug cartels, and yet the blame is always shifted to the users of drugs in the US. The Chinese now have their own fentanyl war against the US, and they have teamed up with the Mexican cartels to smuggle fentanyl into the US, and the Chinese are also money laundering for the Mexican and Latin American cartels. I think the US needs to be very aggressive against Mexico when it comes to this issue, and the Mexican use of nationalism and victimization to rationalize their involvement in the exporting of illegal drugs into the US needs to be called out very aggressively. I've spent a lot of time in China, and they are the biggest money launderers in the world, and their outlaw call and computer centers in places like Myanmar and Lao steal 10's of billions from Americans every year, and especially from senior citizens. Mexico's relationship with China in these illicit trades has led to legitimate business deals between Mexico and China, and the ritualistic anti-Americanism found in Mexican political thinking, and the use of populism and nationalism to hide corruption, means they are potentially a very dangerous neighbor for the US, and it is well past the time to be more open in our criticisms of Mexico and for or policies to affect that reality. Unfortunately, we always take the high ground when Mexico talks their nonsense and that needs to end.
