Johnson's Motor Car
It was down by Brannigan's corner one morning I did stray.
I met a fellow rebel and to me he did say
'We have orders from our Captain to assemble at Dunbar
But how were we to get there without a motor car?'
Oh Barney dear be of good cheer I'll tell you what you'll do.
The Specials they are plentiful but the I.R.A. are few,
We'll send a wire to Johnson to meet us at Stranlar
And we'll give the boys a jolly good drive in Johnson's Motor Car.
When Doctor Johnson heard the news he soon put on his shoes
He said 'this is an urgent case, there is not time to lose,'
He then put on his castor hat and on his breast a star,
You could hear the din going through Glen Fin of Johnson's Motor Car.
But when he got to the Railway Bridge, the rebels he saw there,
Ould Johnson knew the game was up for at him they did stare;
He said 'I have a permit to travel near and far,'
To hell with your English permit, we want you motor car.
All lyrics www.allthelyrics.com
'What will my loyal brethren think when they hear the news
My car it has been commandeered by the rebels at Dunluce,'
We'll give you a receipt for it, all signed by Captain Barr
And when Ireland gets her freedom boy, you'll get your Motor Car
Well we put that car in motion and filled it to the brim
With guns and bayonets shining, which made ould Johnon grim.
Then Barney hoisted the Sinn Fein flag and it fluttered like a star,
And we gave three cheers for the I.R.A. and Johnson's motor car
The Nightingale
Now as I was a-walking one morning in May
I saw a sweet couple together at play
O the one was a fair maid and her beauty shone clear
And the other was a soldier, a brave grenadier.
Cho: But they kissed so sweet and comforting
as they pressed to each other
They went arming along the road
like sister and brother.
They went arming along the road
till they came to a spring,
Then they both sat down together
just to hear the nightingale sing.
Then out of his knapsack, a long fiddle he drew
And he played her such merry tunes as she ever knew,
And he played her such merry tunes, caused the valleys to ring
Hark hark, replied the fair maid, how the nightingales sing.
O come, said the soldier, 'tis time to give o'er
O no, said the maiden, please play one tune more.
I do like your playing, and the touching of the long string
And to see the pretty flowers grow, hear the nightingale sing.
Now I'm going to India, for seven long years
Drinking wines and strong whiskey instead of strong beers
But if I ever return again, it will be in the spring
Then we'll both sit down together, love, and hear the
nightingale sing.

I heard this song in our living room since I was about 5 years old. My Dad had the CH concert and played it quite a bit. We ALL knew every word and sang along. I love these guys, and the memories I have of my Dad singing along. Patrick Cullen, from Belfast. Sang like them as well. Thanks for the great memories!

I remain amazed that the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem were allowed to sing about the IRA on the Ed Sullivan show!! AND Sullivan touted rebel songs. I grew up on this music but didn't realize the significance.

This is excellent, especially the second song. I wonder, is it the end of an era for these songs.? I hope not. Local radio could do better, but we are being fed a false Americanised Ireland by those stations. This was a top class, performance.

this is several years post most comments..but the nightingale is one of my faves by the CB and tommy m. poignant. the other one that gets me is 'the butcher boy'..of course most of their songs are upbeat, and massive rapport with the audience. my dad and mom saw them live one time, i think in the late 70s, said it was just great.

Yep. There were "troubles" in the early '60's, just as there were earlier and later. It's been quiet over there for quite a while now.

Pretty sure this is from their March 13, 1966 appearance. In 1962 the show was still in black and white.
