Bonds International Casino, NYC, U.S.A. May 28 - June 13 1981
Following their appearance at the New York Palladium in 1980, The Clash had refused to play the city unless they could perform in a venue which they considered suitable, an unseated dance hall, so their scheduled seven night season at Bond's, a night club/discotheque near Times Square, seemed a fair solution to the problems, as it would not involve long and tedious journeys in
between gigs. It was also announced that no free press tickets would be available, although a limited number would be on sale at half price for a few selected writers. Although everything had seemed to be well planned, when the season began, chaos ensued. $10 tickets were selling for five times their face value, but a much
greater problem ensued when the New York Fire Department announced after the first night's show that for the rest of the season, they were going to enforce thelegal capacity of Bond's, which was set at 1750 people. On the first night the NYFD said the audience amounted to nearly 4000 people, ruling it unsafe.
After the second show the New York Building Department acquired a court order to close the club. When that was announced the crowd on the pavement outside went berserk, causing a riot in Times Square, and had to cleared by mounted police.
Eventually, a compromise was reached when the City's Building Commissioner agreed that The Clash could complet their season (by now extended to seventeen consecutive shows, which would allow everyone who had bought a ticket to attend a show) if security and fire escapes were improved.
The show brought to you here is from the evening of Tuesday, June 9, 1981

Yes, I was there for the riot! Tons of fun! I was in my junior year of High School and we had bought four Ticketron tickets from a scalper. Stood in line around the building like good little punks until the cops on horses told us to split and we all started running around in the street yelling and throwing shit. Came back next week and saw the show and it was amazing! Who remembers the warm up band made up of small children called The Brattles? The Clash played Radio Clash faster than the record and it was killer. All those kids at school were wasting their time with corny shit like Led Zep and Lynyrd Skynyrd and the hippie Dead. A Clash riot in Manhattan was the perfect place for a sixteen year old punk to be!

I gotta stop ya there. Zep and Skynyrd are amazing bands and you don't lose cool points for liking them. There are no rules. I listen too and play noise rock, punk, hardcore, post punk etc I love music. I never gave a shit what others thought. It's all valid. I love The Stooges and Black Sabbath as much as The Birthday Party, Zep Big Black ETC.

@@slanderbob415 It was very Us vs Them back then. There were ten billion Zep and Skynyrd fans in my high school and five punk rockers. They classic rockers were dinosaurs and boneheads. The Clash were actually making new cutting edge music. Skynyrd was wasting our time with 20 minute versions of Freebird. In 2023 if you wanna dig Zep and Skynyrd it doesn't matter. Back then it did.

I know everybody writes things like what I am about to write, but I assure you that this time IT IS TRUE(!): I was there!!! Somehow, some way, my dear old Dad obtained tickets for one of these Bond's shows. I was in my mid-teens and The Clash was one of my favorite bands at the time. I still do not know how it happened but my Dad started listening to The Clash and, eventually, became a fan as well. He was in his mid-30's so it is not a reach to understand how he could have been hooked by these guys. And hooked is exactly what occurred to him. He freaking loved them. So, he was in NYC on business, saw that The Clash was playing a series of shows, and went to some high-powered friends of his in the entertainment biz, and lo and behold had 2 tickets waiting for us at the box office. I could not believe it. He called me the night before the show, explained to me that he had the tickets, and that I had to catch a bus from Boston (where I was going to school) to NYC asap. Which I did. Now, that particular stretch of late spring/early summer was brutally hot. I am not kidding. NYC was heating up the way only NYC can heat up, the sidewalks were throwing up that weird, hot stench and everybody was walking around with wet clothing and quick tempers. Just getting inside of Bond's was a task. It was PACKED in there with sweltering bodies and rotten, booze breath. I had some woman of about 40 hitting on me. She was little, pretty, and she was smoking tiparillos. I was not attracted at all. The opening act was GrandMaster Flash and the Furious Five. They opened with "White Lines (Don't Do It!)" They only made it through 3-4 songs before the audience starting chucking beer bottles at them. I guess a rock audience circa 1980's was unprepared for what they were bringing. They still aren't. Eventually the lights went down. The theme to "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" could be heard coming from the P.A. The lights came on and there stood our heroes. It almost was too much for my teen-aged brain to process. I had a hard time accepting the fact that I was standing close to and breathing in the same air as The Clash. Now on this particular night The Clash did not open with London Calling. Instead, they opened with I'm So Bored With The USA. I may have been only 15 years old but the irony was not lost on me. It has been almost 40 years since that night, and much of my memories regarding what transpired that night has evaporated away into the ether. Almost everything. The feelings still remain. That awesome feeling one experiences when one has no other desire to be anywhere else but where one is, that certainty that nothing else occurring anywhere else on earth could be more important, more relevant, than what is occurring directly in front of one's eyes. I know that I am not expressing myself as clearly as the subject demands, but no matter. If you have stayed with me this long, you know what I mean: it was one of those nights you experience in your adolescence when, emerging from the other side, you are not the same, and you know it.

I was there on the opening night. Front row against the rail; otherwise I wouldn't have made it. So crowded you couldn't move. People were passing out left and right and we were handing them over the rail to the bouncers behind it and they were getting them out. I took probably 6 rolls of pics, sold a couple to local magazines, and in my itinerant travel days I lost the pics and negatives. I saw 4 or 5 more of those shows too.

I was too bloody young, 14, dwelling in hell in Connecticut, amerikkka to know about this or them. But, Music Lover I am, I saw a Mick Jones and Topper Headon less Clash for that dreadful 'cut the crap' tour. Sublime. Also got to see Mick and Don Letts' B.A.D. for their second album twice. Mick shook my hand and palmed me his guitar pick. I didn't get the original lineup but, if that ain't close enough, what is?!!!😉😊😆

Connecticut is hell for certain. I was older than you and was lucky enough to see the Clash four times. Once at Bonds in 1981, once at Shea Stadium in 1982 and also at Pier 84 where we fought the rain a little. Those three times were the original band. Then at the Agora Ballroom for the lousy Cut The Crap Clash. They were beyond bad. When the Clash were good they were staggeringly great and when they bottomed out it was just sad.

You got it right on target. This is the Clash at its most potent. The video for Radio Clash has a huge Orange/Red/Yellow banner they unfurled outside the Bond. I like that image and think of that as the peak of their mojo. Wonder if that exists in some warehouse. . . . somewhere. . . . it should be in Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
