This version is a whole different beast than the studio version, the recorded version is slower and groovier/funkier...this version is off the chain on fire!
Yes, they reached me. From their souls through my ear into brain and heart. Noch nie sowas geiles von irgend jemandem in nem LiveVideo gesehen und gehört. Und die machen nix, spielen nur ihren Song. No need for a show. Just Clash.
Yeah I was at at friends in la fresh out of limey land watching out Tom Snyder show this is the best version I have ever seen of mag 7 it is magnificent full of energy shame the ending was cut
I was there during the taping of the program. It was the highlight of my internship at NBC. Got to meet Strummer who was so cool and encouraging of a young guitar player like myself. Been a hero of mine ever since.
wow. so cool you were the intern there. I saw this tour. I think this might have been the tour at least I saw in Asbury Park. I also saw them at Bonds. I was so young then tho. I barely understood what i seeing. I just liked it is all.
Personally !, i think this is one of the greatest most energetic live performances ive ever seen. It was absolute 100% dedication and commitment with the clash, and they never really lost that. All 4 of them are great musicians especially Mick.
"You're only as good as your drummer". One of the last great rock bands when they had Topper Headon on the drum throne. I saw them live with and without him.....there was no comparison and Jonesy knew it. Then Joe fired Jonesy (which was like firing Jimmy Page from Zeppelin for God's sake) it was all over. Such a loss. But we still have this MAGNIFICENCE.
@@princeofcupspoc9073 True! I heard that as well. Sadly Joe passed to soon. I also heard that this reunion of the Clash was so close to happening, they wanted to get back out on the road, and when Joe did pass, they strongly considered a sort-of- tribute show, or tour with Tim Armstrong on vocals. Of course he’s no Strummer, but what a great choice for a tribute to Joe. IMO, Armstrong would have been the only choice!
@@matthewreeves6084 A better choice would have been Ari Up from The Slits or Siouxie Sioux Unexpected and unconventional to have a female singer filling in for a male, but Joe would have loved that. HR from Bad Brains would also have done a great job in the spirit of Strummer.
The Clash played at the Capital Theatre Sydney in 1982 . The had 7 consecutive nights of concerts where the concerts were touted as the Magnificent Seven . I recall to this day as I was 17 that they were incredible to say the least. It was amazing how they reached out ( and still do ) to their audience probably to the likes that we may never see this purity ever again . They were Magnificent !
Unreal John, Tommy "Gun" Carroll told me that he and his surfer mates from Newport went every night. We, in Qld, went to the insane concert at Cloudland, Brisbane. Unmatched forever!!
One of the greatest rock songs of all time, especially lyrically. Just unbelievable lyrics from Joe. "Don't you ever stop long enough to start? Get your car outta that gear." Still inspires me today.
I was in high school when this aired: mind blown, permanently. The Clash had a profound impact on me in more ways than one; needless to say, my taste in music was forever changed.
I bought "Sandinista" as a 3 record vinyl for 18.99 at "Sam The Record Man" on Young St. in Toronto when it was released, (going rate for a reg LP being 7.99 at the time). Here we are 40 years later (Sam's is gone) and it's still in my regular rotation and I could say it would be my ONE choice for that "deserted island" only record I could have, because of the pure and genuine innovative goodness packed into it. The Clash, and Joe Strummer primarily, really had his finger on the pulse and his good ear to the ground at this point in time, and this record spelled out what was coming down the pike (and influenced it to a certain degree) , as well as exposed people to genres of music they might not encounter in their local scene. "London Calling" was nominated as best recording of the decade in the 80's, but for me personally, Sandinista is it. I was fortunate to live through this time, but we didn't have the access to all the great video footage instantly available like we do now, and there in, is the gold in the treasure chest.
Every lyric of this song is as right-on now as when the Clash first released it, and the sound and fury go perfectly with the words. I wish more people felt this way. I wish I still felt this way -- enough to actually do something about it. Shit....
I saw this when it first aired. 1:30 am. The parents were gone, the room was full of Clash lovers. Poetry. "Punk Rock" was hated by all the baby boomers. Punk Rock was a response to all the terrible music that owned the airwaves in 1980. Thanks for posting.
OMG what energy from the best band ever, the only one that mattered. Miss them so much. Fortunate to have seem them twice, wish it had been more. Miss you Joe Strummer.
wicked good. Topper just kilz it, driving this crazy pace w\o breaking a sweat. everything about this performance is top shelf. bands just aren't this good anymore, then again ... maybe they weren't before these guys either ;o).
Being familiar with the album-version, I would have assumed this song was too stuffed full of disco sound-effects to be performed so well straight-forwardly in the Clash's standard live four-piece configuration. This one of those rare situations in which I am actually pleased to have been completely and totally wrong.
yes, Joe Strummer invented rap. I saw them in 1981 in San Francisco. they inspired my first mohawk. I am now 63 (a grandmother) Joe would be 60 now. I miss the Clash. What a fun time it was.
22/12/2002 the day the music died....I cried like a baby when joe died ...I blasted out the clash all day and night sat outside drinking Jack daniels breaking my heart....me and my pals would dog the school go to my mums cos she was at work and we would blast out COMBAT ROCK.....now my music heroes are getting older...BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN....ACDC....or has split up like OASIS..but music and memories live on.....god bless u joe...ur my guitar hero 🎸🎸🎸🎸
This is just beyond belief, the power and intensity is incredible! Love how this is very different to the album version too. Too many bands go the same pop/folk sound now, it gets a bit monotonous and there's a lack of lyrical depth; then again I doubt any band will go anywhere lyrically near political as the clash!
+MUD=_- Agreed, thanks for bringing it to attentions. The whole band performance is complete for me...with pure poetry. Also one of few times I seen Joe not mess his words singing live. Here he was on point and raw. Great skills as always too from Topper. In short...brilliant!
Matthew Breeden It's not actually his line, he's doing a really great job of covering Norman Watt Roy's bass part on the original album/single version.
The incredible thing is that he didn’t even play bass when he joined- they brought him on cause they liked the way he looked. Turned out to be a good call, cause holy hell did he get the hang of it.
The Clash were real legends, among the greatest Rock Bands of all times. Rude Boy movie got me into Punk Rock decades back ago. This version is mind-blowing, so much energy and emotion came out.... I consider myself lucky only to watch Joe my Rock hero live , a year before he dies in 2002
Damn if Mick's delay pedal isn't going full force, filling so much space, and at least 2 years before U2 started doing it at that. The Clash really were poised to take over stadiums. But I dunno, how things ended up were just as good.
August 27th, the year was 1982. University of Pennsylvania, Class of '23 Arena. I was 15 and saw what was not only my first concert, but might as well have been my last. The opening act was another legendary band named Burning Spear. It was a hall of fame worthy night and it took me years before I realized what I witnessed. Thanks Mark Pignitore!
Seeing this live on late nite tv I just cant begin to say how refreshing this was from the old -stones, zep ,who, ect this night change me forever ! paul is the coolest looking bass player ever
I effing LOVE this..even better than the studio version. Mick's guitar is awesome, and Joe's intensity? It's like he's from some alternate reality - the greatest frontman ever. They had it all - talent, passion, originality, looks and style.
I’ll always remember showing this to my mate and he said “what you reckon the US audience thought right there and then?” 🤯 a bit like then went to a talk show and witnessed alien magic that they still haven’t got their head around!!❤
One of the greatest video's I've ever seen! what happened to music these days nobody seems to give a shit about anything anymore. these guys are brilliant!
im reading alot of these comments ya'll have, and usually when something gets this much praise - it tends to get out-of-hand, over- the- top, it becomes unreal- but this is a rare situation, this time all the praise im reading - is true! its not unreal, The Clash- the only band you cant 'over-do-it' with your comments, its opposite you cant praise them enough : )
This is what happens when soul, talent and courage come together. 30-something years later and the corporate soundtrack is very much, "You lot! What? Don't stop! Give it all you've got!" The Clash are more relevant all the time.
By punk standards I suppose I would be classified as a yuppie or a pop music dork-but one thing I know for sure The Clash are fucking awesome and I totally get why legions of fans consider them the best ever. They are easily the most influential band of their era. This song right here is one of my favorite songs of all time-and this version is pretty killer.I don't think you can categorize The Clash as punk rock- I think their style is so unique and original that they are in that rare position of being a group that is not defineable. That is a very rare and prestigious honor.
Man! we waited all week for this show to air. It was so exciting to see them live. Back in the days before MTV and RU-vid. God Bless Tom Snyder! (yellow smokers teeth 'n all).
Incredible frenetic performance of a great song....Mick on fire .... Topper is well just tops ... Joe mesmeric ...Paul doing his thing. Its criminal they cut short the explosive jam at the end. Maybe they were worried Joe would do his immortal line at the end "fuckin' long innit" Total class!!!
