After countless viewings of the performance I just now noticed that Mick helps out with the percussion time to time, fantastic musicians all four of them!
Yeah the ' Syndrum/ Arcade sounds ' don't add much ....but it's one of their weakest singles , that was only in their Live set for a few months ..... ( i don't think Joe or Paul would regard themselves as 'fantastic musicians' ! )
"This is Not Free Europe" lyrics says it all. Mates were ahead musically lyrically ahead of it's time. Those drums with a synth are so badass.. Imagine the intensity front stage..For the ages..
@@genogeno6643 I heard with my own ears Joe say this in an interview (Cut the Crap?). And don't get me wrong I love it all. I have a record stashed away somewhere that has Mick reprising his alter ego (?) Futura more of the Radio Clash type rhythms and Overpowered by Funk raps. Gotta find that!
@@lintelle2382 So Joe said that was what got him fired. Joe was into the same thing. He even helped out on Micks first B.A.D. album ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o05LdLgIpuI.html
I love this clip. I saw it when it first aired way back in the day. Much respect goes to Tom Snyder for putting The Clash on his program. I can't think of many other tv shows that would have had them on at the time.
So happy I had an older brother. Growing up in the 80's I could have been kidnapped by horrible dance music but my brother exposed me to the Clash, REM etc. Thank God!
Maybe tied with the pogues. Joe played with both. “Anger can be power, don’t you know you can use it”. He’s righteously angry in so many of his songs, seems particularly clear eyed. Literally as well as figuratively (and envious of his ability to roll his Rs)
I love the angry look Joe shoots Mick at the 2:40 mark. They both had messed up on the song at that point haha. They were always imperfectly perfect :)
Sadly missed this the first time around as my local NBC (?) affiliate had preempted the Tom Snyder Show that night in order to show a Boston Red Sox baseball game (they were playing on the west coast, hence the late hour). I'm still made about it, haha ... but thank god forty years later we have RU-vid to archive stuff like this!
danielscissorhands stayed up to watch this episode to see the Clash. This was during the Bond Casino concerts on Broadway, when the Clash made the news and sold out the venue, which over-sold the show. The fire department got involved and the Clash doubled their show to accommodate their fans!!!! I was there 2 times.
Yeah, then again, the whole band are on the whole "I really really don't want to upset the fans" so I can picture them practising their music for absolutely fucking ages before any gig. Bloody amazing guys.
I think this is just before they started the gigs at Bond‘s in New York City epic two week residence when New York City fire Department tried to shut them down and they booked more shows to make sure everybody that had a ticket could go I went to seven shows and got them fired up on cognac back stage
@TheOmegalomaniac. thank you for the rebuttal. I don't hate Green Day, just don't think they should be mentioned in the same breath as the Clash. I own some GD CDs and have listened them and like them. I guess the politics of the 70's & 80's are different from now. Besides the Clash, there were also many other great 'punk' bands from the 70's, like the Stranglers, The Fall, Gang of Four...respectfully yours, kenhenburn
I'm 50 and saw the Clash twice - to say they were life changing gigs is an understatement. RIP Joe, you are still sorely missed. Thank God we had the Clash...Green Day and the Kaiser Chiefs are just very very very pale wannabes.
one day you will agree with me..When joey died his mother had u2 at the funeral..If you play guitar you will see alot of the edge's playing from the sound of the clash...Thats why they call him the edge...One day..
