The old 1800s boxing stance, also known as the "Old English" or "Classical" stance, was specifically adapted for bare-knuckle fighting. ⚙️ Characteristics: 1. Upright posture 2. Feet parallel, shoulder-width apart 3. Weight evenly distributed 4. Hands held high, guarding face, or one hand gaurding the face, and the rear hand the body 5. Elbows close to body 6. Chin tucked in 🧠 Tactics: 1. Body targeting: Focus on hitting the opponent's body (ribs, solar plexus, kidneys) to avoid damaging hands on the harder skull. 2. Straight punches: Utilize straight punches (jabs, crosses) to maintain distance and reduce risk of hand injury. 3. Uppercuts: Employ uppercuts to strike the chin or body. 4. Clinching: Use clinching to neutralize opponents and conserve energy. 5. Footwork: Employ lateral movement and pivoting to evade punches. 👊 Bare-knuckle adaptations: 1. Reduced head targeting to minimize hand damage 2. Emphasis on body conditioning for endurance 3. Stronger emphasis on defense to avoid hand injuries 4. Clinching to control opponents and avoid punches 🏅Notable bare-knuckle boxers: 1. Daniel Mendoza (English boxing champion, 1792-1795) 2. John Sholto Douglas (Scottish boxing champion, 1817-1821) 3. Tom Molineaux (American-African boxing pioneer, 1810s) Boxing was initially banned in many US states due to brutality concerns. Ironically, the U.S would later birth some of the most iconic and legendary boxers of all-time. The Marquess of Queensberry Rules (1867) introduced gloves, leading to changes in stances and tactics.
