I love how Gaston shows how you can pick up the ruler by flicking up the back, but when he actually goes to pick it up he grabs it the more traditional trying to peel it off the bench. Love you gaston

Here's one for you. I have purchased a lot of tools in my time. I always tell her, you have to spend money to make money. Hit her with the "when I'm on my death bed, I'll want more time, not more money". I recently bought the $2000 odd Hilti laser. I was really trying to hide the receipt, but she saw it. She was going in at me, "YOU SPENT $2000 ON A LASER?!?" I told her.. time is more valuable than money. That laser saves me an incredible amount of time, which means I can get home earlier to spend time with you and make you dinners etc. I slept on the couch for a week.

My daughter (9) and I just watched this episode and she immediately asked where Gaston lived so she could come see his tools. It’s just us no wife or husband, so we don’t need to hide new tools. I show them off to my daughter and she thinks they are awesome. One of her friends just moved to Nelson and we plan to try and visit some time, so we might pop in and dirty Gaston’s hammer some time.

Story time! So whenever I need to (want to) get a new tool (as we're renovating our currently renovating our house) I ask my wife to check if her brother has what I need. I can then "go around his place to borrow it" and return with said tool, (def get rid of the packaging on the way home). It's been 18 months and I still have "her brothers" 18v Makita impact driver hammer drill and framing nail gun set in my garage!

Story time: In the car with the misses, hand on ten and two, safety is paramount. Telling a riveting tale about a 'cool new tool' that would make my life at work so much easier, but unfortunately I could neither afford nor could I justify the purchase. Accountant calls; I must answer via handsfree. Safety is paramount. "blah blah blah, your business must spend X amount of dollars by X date otherwise you'd basically be giving the Australian tax office free money'. Missus turns to me with a sincere smile exclaiming that I deserve the cool new tool. Little does she know my accountant is my friend from highschool, I messaged him prior to jumping in the car with a complete game plan and I'm basically a modern day Mcgyver.

Not blowing smoke, but for me the easiest way to get new tools has been watching the videos featuring Gaston with my partner. There's always something that he'll show off that she thinks is super cool (or super cute, in the case of the mini systainer). Once there's something she wants to get it would be silly not to also grab the other things I've "needed for a while"; saves on shipping, doesn't it?

The Systainer TLoc system is such a game changer. I started off many years ago with the sys1 and was reasonable happy. Then I bought TLoc and thought, "Oh nice, it locks onto the Sys1. Own two TLoc's and you start to understand them. Three or four and you are speeding up your work flow and definitely the packing up of you tools every evening. Start adding the roll carts and your work life suddenly becomes easier. They aren't cheap as we know but just buy one every six months and before you know it, life is just better. Customers are always impressed too, they make you look more professional.

My tool hiding story - I bought the DeWalt DCL050 and hid it from my partner for working on the car. I knew she wouldn't approve of spending that much on a light, so hid it for months until we had a power cut. When we eventually did have one, it was so useful at illuminating entire rooms that she simply couldn't be mad at me - I even got a little smile from her when I said "if I hadn't snuck this purchase, then you would have been forced to light candles all around the house". Didn't have to hide it anymore after that evening!

This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things ru-vid.comUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.

I mostly enjoy the dynamic between Scott and Gaston. Good energy bouncing back and forth, even when Scott is doing flips with the Douglas. No wife or husband here, but my flatmate and I both just started pre-trades at Polytech. Living on the student allowance doesn’t really leave much for new tools, so instead of hiding new tools, it’s hiding what I sold to buy said new tool. Only happened a few times so far, but it goes something like this - “What have you sold? What’s missing from the flat? Where has my monstera plant gone?” Thanks for the videos Scott, and thanks for adding “or husband” in there too! I am very excited/nervous to step into the building industry (as a female) and it’s so good to hear you talking about/including female builders in the dialogue. Thanks for the tautoko!

Another interesting Systainerfact: The standard systainers depth and width are 30x40 cm. They fit within a European standardised system. The system works exactly like A-format paper so it doubles each step from 30x20, 30x40, 60x40, 60x80 to 120x80 which is a full Europallet size. There are many different types of cheaper Eurocrates with accessories that fit the same system so you can mix, match, stack and move the lot in one fell swoop.

Hi Lee. Which other brand of systainer are cheaper than Festool? I'm based in Australia and excepted the Makita PacMac system (which isn't as good) I can't find any cheaper ones on the market
@leegarnier9396
@leegarnier9396 2 года назад
@@paulbulic3213 Yeah the Makita ones are based on Gen1 Systainers with the horrible sticky latches. I get them with the tools I buy and suffer in silence :D. Gen2 and 3 systainers have that swivel latch from the vid which are much easier to open and attach to other systainers. Where I'm from there's a webshop selling BTI tools systainers which are slightly cheaper than the other brands. Hope you like orange. Other than that, you might be able to buy Eurocrates. They're simple plastic crates for which you can buy lids and things like that. They're really nothing as fancy as systainers, but do the job for simple storage needs. I'm from Europe so not sure what's for sale down under. Try searching for container or storage box instead of crate. These two seem to ship to australia: www.auer-packaging.com/au/en/Euro-containers.html www.rodmanplastics.com/logistics-containers?category=Euro+Containers

I have 2 Knipex sidecutters, one for steel wire and one for smaller electrical stuff, and even though they are a bit expensive, they ARE worth it. I get so frustrated with poor sidecutters and Knipex sidecutters are just such a joy!

I bought it because it will save so much time in the long run and really it's part of the job and it will last at least as long as your Bernina Sewing machine!

I tell my lovely partner about a new task I'm having to nut out at work but really spice it up with technical terms and complicated descriptions. I conclude with a closing statement as to why this new wizzbang tool is such an important piece to the puzzle of getting the job done. She loves tools anyway, but boy can she sniff out an unnecessary expense like a blood hound. I've got plenty of practice now, and a few cool, quality tools. Love your work Scott, a great Saturday morning watch after another week on the tools in the heart of Aus, Tasmania.

Story.. Bought a track saw, 2 1400mm tracks and spare blades of all types too make Plinths out of plywood for her art pieces to sit on. She was furious because I built a whole shed with just a circular saw and a level as a straight edge but I ain't a carpenter and I'll be damned if I ever build another box without a tracksaw

I am a member of the Brisbane Tool Library, it's $75 a year and I can borrow anything they have. Heaps of tools and gardening gear too. So anything I buy, becuase they don't have it, I just say it's from the tool library. Then, when I'm done with it, I donate it to the library. Others can then borrow it, and I can get it next time too. So everone wins!

Great tool time episode Scott! I truly enjoy these new and unique tool sneak peaks. Have always caught myself growing up in the home center/hardware store scoping out the tools. I don't think I'll ever let go of it. Great to see you setting into the new home. Sending you the best from LI, NY! ~ Keep up the great work ~

Talk about hiding/ disguising tools. My wife thinks I have a problem with keeping cardboard boxes from things we buy. So I have boxes in the garage, boxes under the stairs, boxes in cupboard. This comes to my advantage though because I then put new tools in the boxes so instead of the original box so my wife doesn’t suspect a thing. The only thing is those boxes keep piling up and my wife is always like you need to throw those boxes out. Harder to find things but better that then not having any new tools!

i think the best story is to say, i've always had that or collect as many tools as possible (Plugging Piranha Tools) so that it all becomes blurred! Glad to see Gaston got his hands on some GRR-RIPPER 3D Pushblock, he did mention he was looking at some when he came to Wellington

PRIZE GIVEAWAY STORY: I've recently finished building two decks at home (total: 30sqm), but needed a way to rip down decking boards into thinner strips and on angles. I was originally using a Makita circular saw, however I wasn't happy with the accuracy of cuts. So I bought a table saw from Mitre10 to use for ripping down thinner boards etc... When my wife saw the table saw in the garage, straight away I was in trouble. However I was quick to let her know that it was a tool that was necessary to finish off the decks safely and I can use it to make her garden planter boxes next. So, a good strategy of mine is to come up with a reason we can both benefit from having a new tool.

I always found the "safety" angle is good for a reason to purchase new tools. "Why did you buy a new table saw when you already have one?" Answer: "It's unsafe and the new one has great safety features". "Oh, ok".

I and my wife were at a friend house. Her husband works building stage sets for Kennedy Center, Washington D.C. She made a comment about how she can not believe how many drills her husband owned. I started counting off how many I own. More than twice as many as he had. My wife asked why so many… I told her each had its own special need. And starting explaining each… since that time she does not ask about my tools when a new one shows on the door step….

My wife asked me why I needed three drills (well four actually, if you count the collator) so I tried some reverse phycology......."well honey, its just like having the right pair of shoes for the right event, you cant just show up in sneakers all the time, can you?", the silence and raised eyebrow told me I was on shakey ground.... I looked at the floor, backed off and left the room without any sudden movements. Note to self.............keep smart arse answers to your wife in your head.

Mate, in the U.K. so not looking for give away. New tool, no excuse normally just squirrelled away into the empire of dirt where she will not see it. If it spotted, then it will speed up job X or Y so I move on to the next one faster for her 😉

Oooh i finaly tools i actualy own :D The knipex set at 8:34, i have that one in a foam box. For just 4 tools is still expensive, but the quality is insane. We have a local electric shop that buys up 'used' tools, refurbish them a bit and sells them off again to give them a 2nd life, even those are still in top condition and can last you years of heavy usage. Few years ago i went to Dusseldorf and the Knipex factory is just east of there, you can even do a tour around their factory, amazing stuff they got :)

Our rule is that I get to buy a new tool each time we start a new project. Then I just make sure the project takes so long that she loses track of whether I’ve bought a new tool yet or not, or break the project down into multiple smaller projects to justify more tools. Works so far!

It’s more.. “it’s cost this much for a pro to come in and do it, but only this much for the tools” That’s why I have a growing set of Makita tools and car parts 😂🤭😉

I believe the tee shirt Gaston has been “modeling” shows the work of John Cederquist, an American artist craftsman. Some of his decorative furniture (a series of kimono themed wardrobes )is strongly influenced by Japanese kimonos designed up to and during the Second World War. His wood cuts as well showcase traditional Japanese carpentry techniques. Great stuff!!

I dont really hide things away from my partner like new tools as long as she knows its well worth the money spent to make more money shes always on board which is a plus. But she does get fascinated and interested in how they work. She and i would call Gaston the go go gadget guy lol. His tools are awesome. Great vid btw 👌🏽

Every time I need a need tool it’s usually involves a project my wife wants me to do. I’ll go to the home center get what I need, do the project and then show her the finished product. She’ll then ask me how I did it? I show her how and then she tells me, “Wow good thing you have that tool.” Thinking I already had the new tool. 😁 One day she found out and I had to build a new shed outside to sleep in. 🤷🏼
