I was 7 years old when sr passed and I'll never forget it feeling like we lost a family member. I was down in the dumps until Atlanta 2002, I'm not looking forward to when Harvick retires because there's nobody else on the track that I can see myself pulling for.
I just turned 11. I was devastated. I lost my hero. I went to school on Monday and just cried all day so I definitely know what you mean when it feels like you lost a family member. Now I have a Dale Sr. tattoo of the 1998 Daytona 500 car so I can honor the legend everyday for the rest of my life.
I think there are a few finishes in the 90's at the superspeedways I've seen that might be closer. But still, this was the most amazing finish I've ever seen. Son and father racing to the line!
Tbf, IROC got current drivers because they were usually support races for NASCAR weekends and were run on the same 'ol tracks. SRX should get a pass for not having current NASCAR stars at every race because it's a different form of motorsport by being focused on short tracks and dirt tracks. I actually am enjoying SRX way, way more than I enjoyed IROC when it was running.
Its interesting when you realize exactly what Dale Sr. did. Coming off of 4 and coming to the checkers, he forced (bumped) Dale Jr. up just a little bit, but it made a significant impact. He made Jr. lose the draft from Rusty by moving him up, thereby effectively taking the draft Dale Jr. had from Rusty Wallace. Sr then capitalized on that by using Rustys draft for just a couple of seconds. It was enough.
