Grand Trunk Western 4070 is a preserved Light Mikado steam locomotive that had an excursion career in the 70's and 80's. During that time, she would suffer several setbacks until finally being withdrawn for an intensive rebuild. Work on her is still ongoing.

"Grand Trunk Western No. 4070 is an S-3-a class 2-8-2 USRA Light Mikado steam locomotive, and it was originally built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in December 1918 for the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR) as No. 474. It was later re-numbered to 3734 by the Grand Trunk Western (GTW), after the GTR was absorbed into Canadian National (CN). In the late 1950s, the locomotive received a larger tender from an S-3-c class locomotive, and it was further re-numbered to 4070."

Fantastic video about 4070’s career, as eventful as it was she still managed plenty of safe and on time arrivals over the years. For those interested, the latest project update can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HMO6-qfz_8A.htmlsi=6AnZMB7hqRVDD-L2

Well well well well, if it isn't my favorite Mike!!! I live about 45 minutes south of the roundhouse where she's being kept; yes, she's been through A LOT of misfortune, but I know she'll make her return!!

I was involved in the early years of the Cuyahoga Valley Line. I chased the first trip, which was a press run, on Saturday, June 28 (not 26), 1975. When they got to the Hale farm stop, they noticed that the engineer's side trailing wheel bearing was running hot, and when one of the crew opened it it flamed out (I happened to be standing a few feet away). So it was done for that trip, they took it down to the MoW siding at Bath Rd. a little over a mile South and it sat there until it could be taken back to Cleveland. That was it for about six weeks. Then one of the first weekends of regular service on a Sunday, the first time I rode the train, it started raining when we were turning around in Akron, and kept raining - hard - all the way back up towards Cleveland. We got north of Independence (the first scene with the train under all of the overpasses) and stopped for a couple of the crew to walk ahead because the rails were covered with water. Sure enough, a significant amount of the track had washed out and we weren't going any further. This was on a Sunday before cell phones, but the Director of Hale Farm, who was on the train, found a phone booth with a phone book, and arranged for seven or eight buses to come get everyone and take us back to the Cleveland Zoo, within two hours. The Diesel was on the train to pull the train to and from the Zoo, not just as backup power, although it did have to take over a few times over the years because of problems with 4070. In October of 1983, 4070 and the MRHF train were leased by the successor group that owned RDG #2102 to pull a fundraising trip from Akron to Willard. It was horrible rainy day, so there are not a lot of photos of the trip. I chased and shot 400 ASA B&W. As for trying to restore it, the late Jerry Jacobson offered to buy it at least once, and maybe more than that, but the MRHF people would not consider selling, even though it certainly would have been restored to operation by him.

the cvsr has grown into a must-see tourist attraction now that the 765 runs there, imagine a doubleheader with the 765 and the 4079.......amazing

@@cykablyatman6242I can tell you that that is not going to happen. You won't be seeing 765 back in the Valley any time soon, and it's 4070 not 4079.

For just a bit of trivia when the 4070 was in South Dayton, NY it broke a rail on the New York & Lake Erie track and the movie train had to be pushed by NY&LE # 75 an Alco S-2 switcher on the back of the train !

I missed my opportunities to ride on one of 4070s excursions back in the day. The closest I came to it is that one of the volunteers for 4070 was in the same model railroad club as me in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. Another steam engine that may be coming online in the next few years is NC&StL 576 in Nashville, TN. I was involved with the Tennessee Central Railway Museum for several years before life got in the way. The then president of the TCRM, Terry Bebout was dreaming and working on getting 576 out of Centennial Park in Nashville even from the late 90s. According to the website, Terry is still around and is one of the board members on the Nashville Steam Preservation Society organization. I'm glad to see that he's still around to see his dream come true.

I grew up riding CVL behind this engine. It was the star of the the show when I was growing up and as bonus the only way to get to Grandma and Grandpas house from ours was through the Cuyahoga Valley Park. If I wasn't riding the train I was trackside watching her. Ill never forget when I was little and got a cinder in my eye. There was no Climate controlled coaches then.

Hey man. I get it. Dick Jensen was in over his head. But he TRIED. The man LOST HIS LIFE trying to preserve history. Even though the results were often less than ideal, he did his best. Let’s try to edify his memory when we speak of him, OK? Thank you for your consideration, and YOUR hard work.

All you have to do is make a video about Southern Railway 4501 and then you have basically completed the supposed trio of excursion mikados in North America. If you don’t know what I mean, people associate 587, 4070, and 4501 as a trio for some reason, but I myself don’t see the connection.
@SouRwy4501Productions
@SouRwy4501Productions 4 месяца назад
I do. They’re all very similar in design, as 587 and 4070 are the same type of locomotive, and 4501’s design is remarkably similar to the USRA light mikado design. I may be wrong, but I believe that the USRA light mikado design might’ve been either influenced or inspired by the Southern Railway Ms class mikado (class 12-48 1/4 E).
