The Ballad of John McLay and Bernie Burdock I & II
(Verse 1)
In the dusty town of Saguaro, when the sun was sinking low,
There rode in a man named John McLay, his eyes a fiery glow.
He was known from west to east, as the fastest in the land,
But the shadows grew with Bernie Burdock’s twisted, ruthless hand.
(Verse 2)
John walked into the saloon, where the whisky flowed like rain,
But his heart was stolen by a girl, sweet Lily was her name.
She smiled like a desert rose, her love pure as the night,
But Bernie Burdock had his eye, and he would start the fight.
(Chorus)
In the heart of the west, where the law was a gun,
Two men faced off 'neath the scorching sun.
One fought for love, the other for greed,
In the end, only one would be freed.
(Verse 3)
Burdock called out McLay, with a sneer and a wicked grin,
He wanted the town, the gold, and the girl, but he couldn't win.
With six guns ready, they took their stand in the middle of the street,
The whole town hushed, knowing soon one would meet defeat.
(Verse 4)
The clock struck noon, and the wind it moaned,
Two shots rang out, and the dust was blown.
John stood tall, while Burdock fell,
In that fateful moment, rang the town's last bell.
(Chorus)
In the heart of the west, where the law was a gun,
Two men faced off 'neath the scorching sun.
One fought for love, the other for greed,
In the end, only one would be freed.
(Verse 5)
John took Lily by the hand, as the town breathed once again,
He'd won his fight, but lost his peace, in the blood of fallen men.
They rode off to the sunset, where the horizon met the sky,
Leaving behind a tale of love, and of a soul who dared to try.
(Verse 6)
In the town of Saguaro, the legend still is told,
Of John McLay, who fought for love, with a heart of solid gold.
But in the shadows, they still say, you can hear the ghostly cry,
Of Bernie Burdock’s final breath, beneath the desert sky.
Hank Wheeler
"Howdy folks! This is Hank Wheeler from Western Radio, and that was 'The Ballad of John McLay and Bernie Burdock' by The Coalminer's Grandson. I hope y’all enjoyed it as much as I did... Pretty heavy, huh? I guess all those tales of love and loss really do tug at the heartstrings.
Now, there's another version of this story, and I'm about to share it with you right now. I happen to like both of them, and I hope you do too. So sit back, relax, and let the music take you on another journey.
Until next time, cheers to you all! Wishing you and your loved ones health and love. Take care, folks!"
