The Cobra Killer takes on the RAC TT Celebration

The Cheetah is a real cult favourite and any chance we get to speak to the owner Duncan Pittaway, we take it. In 2023, the V8 Cheetah entered the RAC TT Celebration and had the chance to take on the Cobras - the job it was always targeted with. Bill Thomas, Chevrolet's Carroll Shelby, was the brains behind the operation and the story is fascinating, but we'll let Duncan walk you through that.
Strategies don't always go to plan at Goodwood Revival, as Duncan, his co-driver Stuart Graham and the Cheetah found out, but you'll have to watch the film to find out why.

Calling that car "The Cobra Killer" is a bold statement considering that the Cheetah never beat a single Cobra in Sanctioned Competition.

@@joevalicenti2722 I think calling it a Cobra Killer is appropriate. The fact that Ford and the Cobras went crying to get the rules changed fits the bill. The Cheetah is a Cobra Killer because the Cobra killed it's reputation by being afraid of the competition and excluding the Cheetah. Kind of the way democrats approach elections these days.

I grew up as a kid in the 60s with a Cheetah in my life, owned by a hot rodder around the corner. That was back in Houston, Texas. It was in a medium blue metal flake. It had black side pipes, with a gorgeous sounding Chevy-V8 rumble, loud as f*ck...my Mom HATED it. I LOVED it. I fell in love at 10 years old. Sixty years later, I'm STILL In Love! More cubic inches is the last thing any Cheetah needs. It's an unruly little monster even with 400-430bhp from a 327 smallblock
@livewire2759
@livewire2759 16 дней назад
The reason it didn't take off is because it was already too powerful for how small and light it was! Big block power would have only exacerbated it's problems. Honestly, the "Z28" 302 engine would've been the perfect engine for the little Cheetah's, but it wasn't developed until late '66...
@ramblerdave1339
@ramblerdave1339 16 дней назад
@@livewire2759Hot Rodders have built those engines ever since the 327 came out. It's just a mixture of 283 and 327 cranks and blocks. Chevrolet only built them to fit the SCCA limit of 5 liters, for the sedan class, which was what the Trans Am series required. Cheetahs were all built with a bored and stroked 327, to 377 ci. What made them evil was poor aerodynamics, with lift front and rear, and spoilers and air dams still not invented yet.
@livewire2759
@livewire2759 16 дней назад
@@ramblerdave1339 Sure, some engine builders were probably building 302s as early as '62, but the Cheetah was built by Chevy engineers using brand new Chevy parts... and CHEVY didn't build any 302s until late '66 for the '67 model year Camaro's. Brand new Chevy 302s didn't exist when the Cheetah's were built... However, because of the Grand Sport Corvettes built earlier in '63, there were a few 377s still laying around after GM stopped Duntov from building more Grand Sports. Yes, they could have built their own engines, but it was much easier to keep the project "under the radar" (since GM was still enforcing the AMA racing ban, which is why they shut down the GS project), by sneaking some complete engine assemblies out of storage, like the ones already built but no longer being used for the GS's. Yes, the major drawback of the Cheetah was the poor aerodynamics, as well as a few other things, but contrary to the OP's opinion, I was simply pointing out that a smaller engine would have helped the Cheetah more so than a larger engine.... precisely because of the poor aero and handling characteristics of the car. It didn't need any more power, it already had too much, and since fancy aero technology hadn't been figured out yet, reducing the power would have been their best option to improve the car at the time, but as we have both pointed out, Chevy wasn't building 302s yet. Therefore, it probably would have been better to use some old Fuelie 283s if there were any of those still laying around, but they had already given up on the Cheetah after it wasn't allowed to run in the same class as the Cobra's anyway.

Don't be afraid to speak the truth . Ford did go crying to the SCCA after the 64 Daytona Speedweek . A Cheetah was clocked at 215 mph , the best that the Cobra could do was 185 mph . Funny thing about the 1000 cars produced rule , Shelby never met the standard either , yet got to continue racing .

No Cheetah went 215 mph and stayed on the ground, without aero aids that hadn't been invented yet, they were known for not being able to steer, at 180, because of front end lift. By the way, the SCCA rule for sports cars was 100 produced.

I got to examine one of the Cheetah roadsters in detail. It struck me as a wild hot rod, but engineering wasn’t involved. The wheelbase is radically short - there is no driveshaft, instead the rear of the transmission bolts directly to the differential. It looks like directional stability was not considered. There is also a designed-in disaster waiting to happen if a long grueling race is attempted, as the rear of the tube frame has a single, unsupported tube on each side sticking straight back to which the rear suspension is bolted. No triangulation, no truss. See if you can find a photo or drawing of that rear suspension mounting. It made me shudder. I hate to imagine that single tube folding upwards at speed. Did you catch that quip about it being a bit warm? The headers leading to the exhaust collectors pass directly in front of and next to the driver’s feet, separated by a thin aluminum panel. After enough hard running the heat will roast the driver’s left foot. Cheetahs did run some impressive times at drag strips, where weight transfer upon launch was an advantage, and cockpit comfort wasn’t important for ¼ mile blasts. Was it bold? Sure. Interesting experiment? Yes. Did any one copy anything from it in designing another car? Not that I know of.

They weren't failing at that time. In fact, they were so successful in the 50s & 60s that they were afraid of the govt. enforcing anti monopoly laws on them, which would have forced them to split all of the divisions into separate companies. That's why GM was the ONLY manufacturer that continued to enforce the AMA ban on factory racing support during the 60s. They finally lifted the ban in '67 AFTER Ford and Chrysler had dominated for about 5 straight years, and then they only had 3 years to play catch-up before the emissions era neutered performance when all R&D money had to be put into meeting new emissions/fuel economy requirements.
