Finally, the fully working combination Howe transmitter.
I realized the opposite of “surface box” would have been flush box, oops! I think all the talk about where they might have been used had me thinking down a different tangent

One sure fire way to check if they're from Chicago is to take them to New York City. If they start complaining, they're from Chicago..... Anyhoo, those are pretty damn neat. I love that bullet lens klaxon signal light unit. Question, how is it generating the pattern? Is there some sort of encoded disk or drum that chunks along with that solenoid and gear assembly? You mention jumpers and dips, but that older ones board (what little can be seen as its installed) almost looks like its from before ICs so...IDK... Either way, cool stuff mate! 😎👍

Yup, that's exactly what it is! I show the specifics around the 8:00 minute mark, which reminds me to add markers to these things! I'd love to actually see the bottom of the disk, but it's hard to get to, there's ball-bearings, everywhere! Both the code-contact mechanism, which is made of spring-loaded ball bearings that push against the bottom of the wheel, as well as the wheel itself, is held in place and all rides on ball bearings. It would be a nightmare to re-assemble. There may be some more clues to what it looks like in the patents, though. It all adds to the notion that this must have been very high end in 1943.....none the less the 30s when they first came out! The transponder does have a bunch of 4000 series cmos logic, and LEDs for each code, but i suspect it took some water damage. I think the transponder was actually an "upgrade" for the older mechanical units, like they would have simply bolted that board in place of the old howe-transmitter, to allow these old stations to work with newer systems, probably sometime in the 1970s they were doing that. The howe-transmitter had a 50 year run, which is pretty impressive, especially given how little is left in regards to information about them. that dictograph alarm lamp uses the tail lamp lens from a 56 belair!
