I got a few high recommendations for this, and I'm glad I got it though it may not be my usual "taste" in swords. Several nice surprises here. Quick thrust test and handling comparison included.
Here's the Link to the sword at Chicago Knife Works. I recommend them highly.

Please buy her one. history lesson coming up.This is why, now I will answer the bonus round. if you consider yourself to be an American this will be awesome. George Washington WAS known since 1755 as SIR, George Washington. in other words he was a knight of the king. the VERY last time he was in England the knight known as George Washington, went to the royal armory and ordered not just any Colichemarde, witch by definition is a gentleman's dueling sword one of the finest ever made. That is important later on. He challenged the king with that in hand. that guy the started America. with that sword. I really want to buy what you are testing.

correct understanding of the nature of the fort, for the parry. but also the sudden change in the width makes a second guard shelf like the double shell hand guard. so it can be forced into the enemies blade early and repel it.
@michaelrizzo5523
@michaelrizzo5523 Месяц назад
That's a good point! I see a lot of folks argue about what it's for and not, and that somehow no one knows for sure. The weapon was so popular, you'd think that information would have stuck with it. But then martial artists can thoroughly live-test how a design works (and doesn't), and even find new uses.

this style of sword is a war sword. I've had one for several years and enjoy drilling with it. I fence with a dull version, but I can tell you that the style of fighting with this sword is for blood. It's the only period sword I dare take the point out of center for thrust, parry, or slash.
@brandonwells1175
@brandonwells1175 2 года назад
@Michael Rizzo try this with the "pinch grip" (cf. 15:20 ff); put your thumb tip in that little concave spot below the finger rings and keep it straight. When you close your hand down in the more instinctive way, thumb and it's fleshy base on top all the way down the handle, the blade will be laying flat. The knuckle bow will be facing left (for right handers). Once you have that grip secure, rotate your wrist so that the blade is in the usual vertical position, thumb now on the left. Trigger finger can also fit into that concave spot on the other side, but this need not be adhered to (in fact, I cannot keep it there 100% when my forearm is properly aligned). This is the essential difference with smallsword, that the palm is on top, almost as if the rapier is used with the Western grip of Tennis and the smallsword with the Eastern grip. It also explains why the guards seem to shift from rapier to sabre to smallsword. Using the finger ring you can rapier grip the colichemarde and use rapier guards. This is recommended only if you are confident you won't be grappled. With smallsword grip the guarde prime is no longer possible, only the high seconde. Get that grip aligned and practice rotating the wrist and see how the guards are shifted about 45° from the rapier paradigm, clockwise from the swordsman's perspective.
@michaelrizzo5523

Yes! Thanks! That makes a lot of sense. I was trying to grip it with my fingers and thumb too high up. I also haven't been a big fan of Prime so far, taking Hutton's advice to use Sixte and Octave to supplement Tierce and Seconde.

Interesting..most colichemarde not only arent sharp down at the strong but normally are triangular in cross section & hollowed on one side rather than having that strong center ridge on both sides. Makes me want to order one to see how it handles now. I know you've said you prefer a straight sword blade over a saber which is normally my preference as well but i have become very fond of the eastern euro weapon sets of the Khevsur & the Cossack. They use a slightly curved saber as well as carrying a Qame short sword which almost amounts to a gladius. Kind of changed my mind on sabers a bit. Just thought you might find it interesting.

Yes, this is an odd one, very "Cold Steel" in sharpening bits that usually aren't. And I have recently given sabers another chance since I've more effectively reprofiled my CS 1796 closer to historic balance standards. Saber crosses over nicely with Tachi and Gunto.

@@michaelrizzo5523 Cold Steel is definitely "that company". Lol That aside i would agree it does cross over nicely but then again it should. Ive been going back and forth rewatching this video, the cold steel english backsword and the Windlass Black Marauder video. I want more european post 15th century swords in my collection and I cant decide between these three. I have to ask which of the three would you recommend the most?
@michaelrizzo5523
@michaelrizzo5523 4 месяца назад
The Colichemarde is the highest quality build of the three. It is a dedicated smallsword, more late 18th Century. I'm not a big fan of smallsword, but for a smallsword it's pretty nice, and comes really sharp. The Marauder has no factory edge or distal taper, the painted hilt looks a bit cheap, and it doesn't have any real hand protection against a thrust or for fingering the guard as it's modeled after very early 16th Century rapiers. (I haven't spent much time with this one as my daughter pirated it right after I made the video.) I'd highly recommend the Cold Steel Cavalier over both of these, and you may be able to find one for a little bit more. It fits in that 17th Century transition between big rapiers and smallswords. Feels great, well balanced, very responsive for training rapier or smallsword. If you want a backsword, I'd recommend a Hanwei for about $100 more than the CS. The CS is tough and nimble but not very refined in terms of finish. Good user sword, but I like my Hanweis better.

If you know how to sharpen knives you can get anything like that to cut hair like its not attached at all. You just have to learn. The British knives are an example of knives that only work well if you know what your doing. And then if you do, they REALLY can't be beat. They are the best. This reminds me of the profile and i plan on buying one just to collect. If I was back in the day, this is the only knife I would want. Absolutely beautiful. If the wire bothers you too much, you can tamp it down permanently with plastic super glue, like JBweld. Might take some time but you can do it. Wouldn't help resale but this is clearly designed for gloves. Leather gloves.

If you have the opportunity to handle an antique smallsword you will be very surprised at it's lightness. Most copies end up a bit too heavy. Practicing smallsword is excellent for several reasons. It will compliment your sabre training. It will enable you to spar for longer (do your normal sparring and when fatigued, continue with the smallsword). And it's tremendously fun fencing! Hutton is very good but you can throw in other styles as well.

Unfortunately it didn't have a Scabbard. I also have a 1780 French Colichemarde Smallsword that's double edged and 36". Very flexible and whippy. Not as good as the triangular blade. Good piece for history though. My 1800's British Infantry Officer Spadroon is quite nice though. Especially with the gold Gilt and large shell guard. Still slightly sharp to this day. Even with the tiny nicks in it.

Glad I bought it back in early 2022 with its parrying dagger too. I really wish Cold Steel would sell a leather frog with their swords and daggers. That clip you see on the scabbard is not for your belt. It's for a leather frog which attaches to your belt. It fits in my German 1930's bayonet frog fairly ok. The Colichemarde Dagger and Shell Guard Companion Dagger( which can be drawn very quickly) should also have an angled clip to draw with the left hand which is in the small of the back. Both daggers you use in conjunction with the Colichemarde Smallsword and Shell Guard Rapier.

I would say the edge is designed to draw blood in a duel but not create a substantial injury. Against tatami, it would slash the surface but not cut through very deeply. Against something like a milk bottle, it could cut it open (especially with a tip slash) but you'd have a hard time making it through. It's a slasher, and a very good thruster, but not much of a cutter.
@robertpatter5509
@robertpatter5509 2 года назад
These are worrying cuts at best. They can be dangerous, but they don't cut like a saber or longsword. It's primarily a thrusting sword. Why it's sharp at the Colichemarde might be to make sure others do not grab the blade. Cold Steel words generally are overbuilt monsters. And mostly quite sharp to begin with. Mine is at least. I have a few authentic Smallswords and Spadroons. This Colichemarde Smallsword is far heavier than all of those. So, if the Rapier is just too much for everyday carry, then this Smallsword could be a great alternative. It's lighter and certainly slimmer than a rapier. By a quite large margin. Cold Steel doesn't necessarily do exact reproductions but what they reproduce is the spirit of the sword but with better steel, robustness and weight in mind. They evoke the spirit of the Smallsword.

Also, use of unified body structure to keep from knocking the emptying bottles off the stand is a great exercise to improve handling and gain point control. You really have to keep the rear foot planted and maintain a unified, elastic force from it to the sword hand.

@@brandonwells1175 My biggest challenge has been developing a good stable quick lunge. Unified I'm definitely not, not yet. Been working both the longer Italian and the more conservative English. My disengagements also lack any kind of subtlety, but the wrist work is great PT. I'll probably pick up one of the Spanish classics next.

@@michaelrizzo5523 Don't give up on this piece until you've gained some ground working that sideways oriented lunge. The colichemarde isn't meant to be propelled by bending and straightening the elbow but by keeping the frame throughout the lunge-recover sequence, elbow not locked but striaght open. Some curling is inevitable in quarte, but you know that from Cappo Ferro.

@@michaelrizzo5523 Best resource for this style is Angelo the elder's "The School of Fencing," 1771 I think. Kindle has a nice colorized version but it is easily found online.

I heard the colichemarde is a small sword design to parry Calvary sabers

I need to figure out how to put that to the test. There's enough steel in the forte to pull it off, I just don't know how well I could hold onto it while it takes a hard hit.

Historically that forte was only about 4in long and may have helped with binding. This Cold Steel model is an interpretation, not a replica.

I read that the pommel is threaded and not peened. That got me a bit skeptical. How did it hold up so far?
@michaelrizzo5523
@michaelrizzo5523 3 месяца назад
A lot of Cold Steel and some Windlass swords are threaded. Makes repairs and customizing much easier. Only a few have loosened up on me under impact. Since I haven't been hitting anything hard with this one, it hasn't been a problem.

@@michaelrizzo5523 thanks for the answer. Have you managed to cut water bottles with it? How did it fare? I'm very cautious with this one because here in Italy (greetings form the fatherland) it costs 600 bucks shipping included. So I don't know if it's worth it.

@@jon2067 It's not a cutter. Thin blade, steep diamond, and pinch grip doesn't give you cutting leverage. You might be able to slash a pool noodle with it. I also asked a friend who uses this sword extensively and loves it as a thruster. For what you'd be paying, you might be able to find a good side sword (Marozzo and Manciolino would be proud) or military rapier. LK Chen makes some very good ones, and Kingston Arms has a pretty good lightweight side sword if you can find one: sbg-sword-store.sword-buyers-guide.com/product768.html
