When I look at comments posted on the subject of Christianity many of the people against religion seem very agitated or upset with people who believe in Christ. I wonder why this is?

One story that struck me recently was of a young Oxbridge academic arguing that if a meat eater were drowning, he would not try to save their life - just because they eat meat. Someone brought up with Christian values, would never, ever argue for that. I am 70 and went to a Catholic school. Even though I left my religion behind many years ago, the values which we were taught have stuck with me. I dread to think which way we are heading …

No. The turning point was the widespread acceptance even within theChurch ( and the Church is not just the C of E) of Darwinism.

I think we are going to start seeing faith decentralized more and more just like we are seeing everything else decentralize in the age of the internet. My concern isn't that the moral root of humanity is lost but its digitized in the same way social interaction has been. Exercises of faith are so much more potent in person.

I believe you can be a Christian and still support war. In my case, I saw people suffering and dying and was willing to sacrifice my life for their sake. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." -John 15:13

Although there are many reasons that contribute to the decline of ANY form of Faith in today's societies, the one that prevails to me personally the most was the occurence in the late 70's as a young boy. (Canada) I recall sitting next to my larger then Life Dad listening to the mostly AM radio and a News Flash coming on that Sunday(Christian Sabbath) is now Open for Shopping. We were NOT particularly Church Religious types per say but held our own with Kitchen table open Biblical reading and Full discussion. The radio proclamation hit me like a Lead Balloon and as a Lad turned to my Dad and said "Dad, this ain't Good is it"? For the first time in my Boys Life I witnessed my Dad Sobbing with tears in his Steel Blue Eyes and Brill Cream Jet Black Slicked Hair and could barely muster a word but merely NOD in agreement. That day was the first day of the last day of my life. Some years later in my early 20's after attending a little Church my elder sister attended I came to accept Jesus Christ into my heart and was struck like a lightening Bolt with so much Love and Compassion for everything and everyone beyond Words. Christ Folks has one thing that NO others have thanks to Jesus. We have the Holy Spirit of GOD for those who chose to accept His gift that gives us the ability to be the Light of GOD within and WE Who on Earth remaining have the responsibility to LET it SHINE wherever we can for we are his representatives on Earth to ALL others regardless. There are a lot of people converting to Christianity. There are so many new testimonials on RU-vid for example. I myself came to Christ just under a year ago and I was probably the least likely to convert!

Although we may be experiencing a downward dip in this current cycle of participation in Christian worship, those of us within God’s fold should take heart that He is always in control & be comforted that we will soon inherit eternal life with our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ.

My 2 teenage sons have only been to church for funerals.. I've purposefully not brought them up with a Christian /religious bent.

Christianity may well have collapsed in the west but is thriving in other parts of the world. The west has focused upon 'absolute' individualism. This promotes values that are in opposition to any form of dogma but becomes one itself. It has created a fractured community with the core value being 'make as much money as you can'. This just promotes separation but it is driven by fear to survive. This is how capitalists view life 'dog eat dog' 'the strongest survive' and yet clearly cooperation is the tool for advancement. The values of the west have become entirely bankrupt and even this assault upon Russia and soon China, is indicative that they have no idea other than what was used in the past, conquest and plunder.

This is something that has concerned me all of my life. My parents generation gave up on religion and replaced it with nothing. I was not Christened but I did have a partially religious upbringing thanks to my school. I got my children Christened but their school is so irreligious, they finished primary school without knowing the Lord’s Prayer, which I have now taught to them. I am trying to pass on our culture but it’s a losing battle. The only positive thing I learned recently is schools now teach British values which include democracy and the rule of law.

There was an article in The Atlantic "Can you be good without God?" The Nordic Countries are reportedly the happiest countries while participation in religion is low.

The Holy Spirit leads souls to Christ without the aid of any external means.

I agree that the collapse of Christianity accelerated from WWI but it had started with the popularisation of Darwin's Theory of evolution in the previous century. Furthermore I think it's more the upheaval in traditional roles of man and woman caused by WWI that's to blame, rather than the reason he gives.

Dear Peter is quite correct about the flow of culture and civilization away from Christianity but dont forget the Gospel has the power to rise from the dead. We are experiencing the death or decline of something inherently Christian, but it can never be the actual death of Total Christianity. That's what the last 2000 years show us. Christ is risen. And that's that!

People are empty, they fill themselves with everything but Christ. The harvest is great.

There are more things than what can be bought and sold, a number of which can be secured by society.

World War 1 was the death of the old world, and world war 2 was the birthing pains of the new one. People replaced god with the government, and heaven with the utopia yet to come.

The real question is why do some people need religion and some people do not.

Sadly we are entering the valley of the shadow, godlessness will abound , and we will be chastised, it is now unavoidable. Perhaps the tribulation has arrived.

The British lost their spiritual anchor (euphemism for turning against God) and with that they lost the empire, their morals and their wealth. Evidence: Edward VIII abdicated a throne and an empire for personal (euphemism for selfish, narcissistic) happiness. Bank of England stated printing paper money without gold in the vault violating the promise that’s signed on every note by the treasurer.

Yes Christianity is declining in Europe more and more but what Hitchens fails to mention is religion is not. Paganism and new age religions are increasing more and more all the time so society isn’t becoming more secular it’s just shifting. Which could just be a red flag for revelations coming to a head or we could just be in for another revival in the next 100 years.

In what way is godly power more authoritative and relevant than temporal power? When was the last time God enforced his laws? Is gravity a law of nature or does God command masses to attract each other, and then enforces those commandments religiously.
