I like the Colle, I’m rated in the 500's (I know, I suck lol) but I try to use this system as white whenever I can. At that level sometimes it's hard to get the setup because the person playing black just throws random crap at you messing it up. Bringing their bishops and knights way out, moving them all over the board not following any opening principles ect... I usually lose games lol however when I do get to use the Colle properly I win.

The good thing about chess is that no matter your rating, we all suck! It's a maddeningly difficult game at times! Glad to hear you're having success in the Colle when it goes to plan. It's a nice solid one so when your opponent throws out random moves, I'd say just make sure your pieces are defended and make slow improving moves (like centralising Rooks, limiting your opponent's piece mobility with pawns etc) and gradually expand your control of the centre. There are definitely more detailed colle videos online but the best way to learn is to stick with it and then analyse games with an engine to see what to do against the random stuff which is likely sub optimal

I still prefer the Colle-Zukertort system, as the regular Colle allows the black c pawn push. The b3 move by white in immediate response to Black's c5 move, neutralizes that push, activates the queens side bishop sooner. It's also less popular than the London and Jobava. Less studied by your opponents, (probably). Thanks for your vid. Cheers.

Really like your style. You get principles across very clearly - e4 square. With a bit of fun - loved the Ikea line and the nuts and bolts flying. Learned a lot. Keep it up.

Hi, I would suggest going through a line or 2 if black takes the e4 pawn. My guess is most players below 2000 can't resist it.)))
@rv706

Well, Black has to take the e4 pawn: what else would you do? If you don't take, White will push up to e5 as in the match in the video.

I'm new to the Colle and have watched several vids. Your explanation is really good. I have played the Colle against the King Indian or Pirc, the same as black played in your game. I found it too hard to attack. They didn't move the bishop to H8, which you've made look easy to attack. How do you attack when the bishop stays on G7 ?

Good video. Two questions. I have trouble with this system if black brings Bishop to F5 before I get mine to D3. What to do in that case? Also, if black castles Queen side, the whole system breaks down. How do you adjust?
@ChessPlease
@ChessPlease Год назад
Hey Gregory, thanks for the q! So I've looked into this and the early Bf5 by black is actually known as the Anti-Colle! It's not a total disaster to still go Bd3 and offer a trade but what the computer and database like more in that position is c4 which looks quite good, like a queen's gambit without the gambit. From there Nc3, other knight to H4 to harass the early bishop and your bishop to Be2 are all decent homes for your pieces and a very playable, solid position. Not quite colle-town but a good flexible adjustment. I think this would also be the play if black castles long, but depending on how quickly they develop, you may still have time to prep the standard e4 pawn break before they castle.

Can one also play this as black?
@rv706
@rv706 Год назад
So it's a just a worse version of the London. This plan of striking on e4 you can can do in the London as well, but in the latter you have flexibility to go for other plans as well, such as breaking with c4, or putting a knight on e5.

What happens if the opponent develops the Bishop to F5 instead of G4 (one move before your move to d3 with the white Bishop....) ? It favours Black in my opinion if your opponent can exchange white Bishops in the Colle. Your explanation is nice but a bit too short-sighted.

Yeah but Colle system has great Greek gift ideas, something he didn't explain nearly enough. He really showed black playing optimally. If f3 knight wasn't pinned by the bishop for example, there would be loads of kingside attacking ideas. Also, an advantage of playing Colle over the London is that you can use the e4 plans just like in the london, but being up a tempo. You focus much less on controlling e5 or opening up kingside rook, and much more on creating a grand prix like attack. An advantage of the Colle system is that people see the London all the time. And playing e4 in the london, is not a popular move at lower levels, so an unfamiliar idea to most people. You have the surprise factor in playing very passively, but really it's just a wolf in sheep's clothing once you blow up the center.

A bit late to the party but "Colle" is pronounced "coal" . Not as fun as the pun on "Collie" dog though. I guess a case of a untruth being repeated enough , it becomes a truth.
