I first saw this film when I was back in high school. I never liked the tragic ending. Freddie was totally out of touch with reality. Even if Miranda was eventually willing, she was too much of a woman for Freddie to handle, intellectually, emotionally, socially and of course sexually. I remember wishing for somebody to come along and rescue both of them. This may have been the worst mismatch in film history. But today , this type of crime is a terrifying reality!

I'm sure there were serial killers active in the 60s as well. Law enforcement was probably less organised to see the patters. That Fowles wrote such an accurate representation of a serial killer's psyche and MO almost 2 decades before they became a part of social consciousness is amazing.

for YEARS.. ever since i was a kid, i would think about this movie off and on. i was VERY young when i saw this. and i never knew what it was called. all i remember was the end. when this chick dies and he then seeks to find another victim. a nurse that was walking down the street. FINALLY! i know the name and found it!!! thanks!!!

@MissCandieson the victim more or less fell into illness and starved herself to death. you know as though like catching a lively butterfly, storing it in a glass bottle, and allowing it to die eventually. the collector had treated his victim like a prized butterfly.

What a pity this girl! My mom also kidnapped , as in this film. Rich drug dealer fell in love with our mother and he stole her , forcibly took her to wife, killing our father, ruined our lives forever. It was in Tajikistan , I was 6 years old and my brother 3 year. Our family went from there. My mother tried to escape , but she was caught and returned to new husband. Later we learned, that my mother had died in childbirth fourth child from kidnapper bastard. But we still hope to find my mother, we think that the rumors of her death, specifically distributed thief, so we were not looking for our unfortunate mother. God grant that all the missing were found!

@harrywal123 you're absolutely correct! the problem is obsession. the criminal in this movie catches and collects women, one at a time, treating them like precious specimen of butterflies.

right, the collector kidnaps his female victim one at a time, and treats her as though like a rare butterfly, to be kept alive for as long as possible. Only after the victim has died, the collector then goes seeking for another.

aleczaromance, your English is just fine! Anyone who can speak, read and write more than one language, is quite remarkable in my book. BRAVO! Keep up the good work. Love from America :-)

I love this film because one of my favourite songs is based on it (SlipKnot - Prosthetics) it's such a great film, but many do not understand the meaning behind it, they assume it's about kidknapping and the story of a sick man, which it is, but the main theme is obsession.

thats not how it happens in the book by John Fowles, in the book, he tricks her into thinking he's hit a dog or something like that, and then hits her into the camper van and chloroforms her , or chloforms her first. ahah . i should watch this film :) AS im studying the book in lit :)

Why would you want a remake when the original is close to perfect?

Also in the book, didn't Ferdinand say to Miranda that he ran over a dog? Just before he chloroforms her?

you're in a fortunate situation that you have a chance to read this novel. in those early years, it ain't easy to find this book in mass circulation at my location.

a screenplay adaptation from the novel does not need to follow every chapter faithfully.

I love the story and hate it at the same time, I love the story but it upsets me that this asshole relies on kidnapping and holding a girl hostage in the homes that she will come to love him eventually. I also hate how this book pushed or inspired other people to kidnap other people. Someone should tell him to get a freakin life.
