People! 1968!!! Live footage in black and white!!! The Collectors! I was 13 years old when I heard this record in my older sister's room and I was whiped off my feet. Really! I am from The Netherlands, so I couldn't understand what this song was about. But it felt like no good news. I mean, I really felt it!!! Ofcourse, some words we all know and understand: love, what love? Senators, gouvernors et cetera. I think it is safe to say that this one is a kind you really don't have to understand the lyrics from to know what they are talking about. And just look at the expression of those kids over here, that says it all!

O Lord, this is frickin’ hilarious. I’ve had a bootleg VHS copy of this performance for about 20 years, bought from a well-known Vancouver collector’s record store whose owner nervously sold it to me from under the counter. When he told me he had copies of the CBC tape I knew I had to have it, for two principal reasons: One, it’s the Collectors, performing the What Love Suite- their magnum opus -for the last time as a group (they performed it for the very last time a few days later with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, in the 2900-seat Queen Elizabeth Theatre in downtown Vancouver). After that, lead singer Howie Vickers left the band and they soon morphed into Chilliwack, a phenomenal, often exploratory band until they went mainstream three or four years later). The other reason I had to have the tape is that I appear in it. Yes, folks, I Was There. Along with three friends. I had heard of this taping on the radio just a few hours before it was due to happen and rounded up my friends- all of us serious Collectors fans. We knew we had to be there for the Last Show, so we raced into town that evening from our subruban homes. I make my appearance at 17:04, the blonde-haired, kinda geeky 17-year-old holding his head (no, I wasn’t stoned). Some creative editor suprimposed Howie on me, probably because we had our hands in similarly prayerful positions. Some clarifications: -This performance was taped in May of 1969, not December of ’68 as the introduction says. Like I said, I was there. - It took place in the old CBC Vancouver studios at Bute and Georgia downtown, long since demolished. -For the taping Howie stood apart from the band and sang to a single dedicated camera. Hence the ghostly floating-head effect, evidently what the director was trying for. Happy to see this posted. I’ve always regarded the Collectors as the finest band that’s ever emerged from Canada (and Bill Henderson as the country’s best rock guitarist), yet sadly they’ve become all but forgotten. “What Love “ was always the highpoint of their live performances and this tape helps to illustrate why.

I agree with what you say. I'm always promoting Howie Vickers as the best rock singer ever--you know, not referring to Elvis P. type rock but of the rock band voices such as Van Halen or the Stones, this guy's voice is pretty great. Not that I believe in rankings, but he's got a great scream, a great high falsetto (or near-falsetto), and a nice tone in a normal range. I think Claire Lawrence is another major asset here--flute, keys, sax ... I was not much impressed with Chilliwack, though. (I recall and ad that used to go 'Chilli-wa-wa-wack,' like an echo, for them, but no one else has ever recalled that.) Also love "Howard Christman's Older," for Vickers' fine voice.

@@fingling8 I'm no expert and certainly not a singer but falsetto is more nose voice, than head voice. Mick Jagger does this very well. "She smiled sweetly" is a good example. Not many singers (that I know of can pull it off as convincingly as well as Howie Vickers/Jagger. I wish there was more of Clare Lawrence. Appreciate your comment.

I've never heard of these guys before but watching this they were really very intellectual and wrote very creative music that must have been an ultimate gas for you to see yourself in this video and the way they used to juxtaposed with the singer that had to blow your mind when you first saw it that's really awesome they certainly had a awesome fan in you thanks for sharing your story really fascinating your personal connection with all of this made the music and the group seem that much closer in this performance with the human element in your story combining in this very early Acid Rock almost opera-like performance at first it was a little weird but after a while it really built into something special it really sort of takes you on a Moody Blues type Journey that seems to go on for a very long time put you in a real nice meditative State I really enjoyed it especially like the saxophone solo that guy was really good very Soulful and expressive hard to believe I never heard of these guys before but thanks to you too I've been discovering all kind of cool groups from the past. I'm 60 years old now so I'm old enough to remember that I was unfortunate enough to be a little bit too young to experience all of it in its Heyday like my younger uncle's did in the late 60s I just caught the tail end of it all and head to tolerate the music that came afterwards lol. Anyways, thanks for sharing your story I really enjoyed it all! Peace, Bob

Incredible suite. I've never heard anything like it since I first encountered them in the late 70s when they appeared in Ottawa during the Exhibition. Their album "The Collectors" should be in the 'must-haves' list of every collector of vintage rock music. I say this because I have a good condition vinyl copy and a digital version for when I feel the need for some "Lydia Purple".

The last part of the recording (not the video) has an extended version of Howie signing "Does anyone hear?" The kids in the audiance have amazing paitience to sit through this with minimum movement. Kids today in this setting would have trouble not keeping still. Bill Henderson here must be about 23 years old. Love this. Clare lawrence is amazing.

It was a small, crowded TV studio, with all of us in the audience sitting on the floor, which meant there was not much room to move about even if we'd wanted to. And the presence of the camera crew and assorted technicians and producers was a bit intimidating. But mostly, those of us who were there loved the band and were deeply into the music, knowing it would be the last time we would ever hear it live, and we would not have dreamed of disrupting the performance. It was a powerful experience and a rather solemn occasion, like being in church..

A new one on me. I have a copy of a video of Grass and Wild Strawberries live and the single track What Is Love (the short track that opens the debut LP) but this is an excellent addition. I'm under the impression that there exists a video where they played the (otherwise unreleased) tracks "Adanac", "Uncle Wiggly" and "Ring The Bells" but I've never seen this?

I would love to know more about that video you speak of. The early Collectors were a rather theatrical band; in some songs Howie would play characters on stage and there were no instrumental fireworks. There are a number of early songs like "Adanac" (with its great chorus: "Everything is second-rate in A-D-A-N-A-C..." (get it?) They did ironic, sometimes satirical songs that were quite unlike what came later. Most of those early songs, AFAIK, went unrecorded (except for the first two singles, "Looking At a Baby" and "Fisherwoman"). The Collectors largely abandoned their old repertoire after Howie quit, with a couple of notable exceptions like "Seventeenth Summer" and "Early Morning" from "Grass And wild Strawberries". After Howie left, the band worked both of these songs into stunningly powerful tours de force. If you ever hear more about that video, post the info here.

@@g.m.watson1963 I mention several videos. I assume you mean the ADANAC one. There's a bootleg out there with the three mentioned tracks on it. The notes with the boot credit them to a TV recording and they sound like an off air recording. That's all I can tell you. It could well be that the video was never recorded, only the sound. Personally I prefer the Collectors to Chilliwack - for me, the latter's albums became less an less interesting.

After seeing this video, I asked Howie Vickers that very question. Both he and guitarist Bill Henderson recalled that tv show producers put him in some sort of isolation booth so that the live-from-the-floor amplified instruments wouldn’t unduly affect the lead vocals in the mix.
