Welcome to the Video! Let’s talk Color!
Color could possibly be one of my all time favorite things! Where would we be without the softness of an evening sky or the contrasting dark hues of a storm.. . Flourescent peach next to dove grey & strawberry red or powder blue paired with an oystery taupe, or mint green with marigold & fuschia.. .
There is a very technical way to learn color mixing which I do highly recommend, it will inevitably help you to understand color theory & mixing on your feet while painting, but I often like to also use color poetically.. . In other words, when I’m painting, I don’t want to think scientifically that red & blue make purple, I want to start with a Lavendar pigment & add pink pipestone to it, or start with an effervescent lemon yellow & add a bit of Paris with French ochre 🌬️🫧🫧🫧 {also quite fond of the new bubble emoji lol} {.. . However i will say alot of work has gone into making cohesive colors that will form a palette that works together when im painting, for example, many of my ‘colors’ are brighter with a cool undertone, so i can pair any of these together & mix them with the ‘neutrals’ i love, ie. French ochre, Sedona, burnt tigers eye~ all Daniel Smth, any violet earth, a dark brown like Schmincke sepia reddish or DS van dyck brown & lastly DS hematite}
Color is an inherent part of your artwork, & plays a vital role in your style {even the lack of it, the amount of contrast you choose, how you mix your colors, whats on your palette, how you lay the color on the page etc}
Ive always loved filling sketchbooks with color charts, color notes, ideas for pairings, learning about each color in my palette, how it moves in water, how it mixes with other colors, how it glazes, how opaque or transparent it is, & so this year i wanted to return to color with the very limited amount of time in each day for painting.. . Hence, the color journal.. .
Very quickly, color became pattern & roses & maybe a pencil sketch of an ampersand or an emblem.. .
I felt so happy seeing this garden of color come together & I thought it was so interesting that when you look at the days through this lens, there are actually quite a lot of differences in what can seem like monotonous days!
I thoroughly recommend starting your own color a day project, & growing a color garden in your sketchbooks! You may want to reserve an entire sketchbook for forages into color, or add several pages into a sketchbook currently on the go, either way, I hope you’ll be delighted with the result!
Heres also a wonderful way to begin!

I love this style of line work & contrast as much as I love the masterful depictions of city skylines from Joseph Zbukvic

The sketchbook I’m using here is the handbook co journal watercolor edition {with the blue flower on the cover, the pages are the same as the red just a little thicker so they don’t buckle}
