CROSS COUNTRY IS BACK! I'm more determined than ever to battle away my cross country demons of old. In this video I talk about the good times of running for Great Britain over the cross country, and the worst of times when I hated running, when cross country went TERRIBLY during my time at the University of Oregon as a duck on the xc team, and how this year is going to be different. Kicking off the season at the Cardiff Cross Challenge World Series Gold meet, on a rapid and challenging course!

The American courses are totally golf courses!! I remember losing one of my spikes trying to cross the mud on Kent champs one year (America "cross-country" pfffft..) :D

Never understood middle distance athletes who openly state that they "hate " cross country. Even when seriously aiming at 800 and 1500 in the summer the winter months were the most "fun" part of the year. Competition was deadly serious but not the be all and end all of the year like the big races in the summer. And I always regarded it as bloody good conditioning for the summer track season - as did athletes such as Snell and Ovett. One track is pretty much like any other, road surfaces don't vary very much but with cross country you never really know what's coming from one week to the next. Enjoy!
@Stevenc1984
@Stevenc1984 Год назад
I wouldn't say I hate cross country, but I never race well it the wet. Didn't have the same issues in the summer, it did take a lot longer to get up to speed though. Horses for courses as they say.

Mark, are you aware of why Phily hated cross country and the depression and anxiety that she was witnessing in the period she mentioned?
@PhilyBowden
@PhilyBowden Год назад
I think for a lot of middle distance runners it’s just so far from the fast and furious tactical nature of their races, they dislike it because it’s not their natural forté.. but I agree! It was the most fun part of my year as a kid going through the age groups
@bartb217

The taking care of your body part is something that is my current "battle", it really takes dedication and self-control. Started running again after a couple of years of not running and want to get back in competition shape. Going from 2 to 3 to 4 times a week and from 20 to 50 or more km a week and wanting even more is impossible to keep up without injury, poor results, overtraining and getting sick, without proper sleep, nutrition, recovery runs, strength training, etc.

Great to see you racing XC. You know it makes sense! The first one of the season is always the toughest so don't worry about that. Don't stop at Liverpool though, keep it going through to March... county league races, your county and area champs, Inter Counties and of course The National. The South of the Thames on Dec 17th is being hosted by your club this year! Your club's winter fixture list seems to have them all covered so just use that to tick them all off! You would be ticking off great channel content at the same time as well! All of that extra strength could be used as build up to your next marathon...London on April 23rd. Sub 2.30 could be your reward for loving that grind!

Loved watching the pre-race, elite start, post-race. Brilliant how you wear your heart on your sleeve. I recently walked 48km across the Herefordshire hills in a day. Took 12 hours. How you felt at the end of the running, is how I felt after my walk. People who run the trail can do it in 6 hours. I reckon you would do it in 3-4 hours no problem!

Well done Phily, I can't wait to see how your XC season goes! Do you have any tips on how to deal mentally with a period off running? I picked up a small Achilles injury at my marathon last week, and so am taking 2 weeks off to hopefully let that heal, before getting back into a block of training leading up to Christmas. But I'm finding not running very difficult mentally, even if physically I believe it's the right thing to do. I'm just praying that I'll be able to resume training as planned on Halloween.
@PhilyBowden
@PhilyBowden Год назад
I always try to distract myself! If you can cross train without pain that’s an option: swim, bike or do some upper body stuff! And stay busy/ do all the things you usually can’t because of training commitments. And get outside as much as you can!

short races are so hard to get dialed-in. for short races under 1hr, I find the race actually starts 45mins before the start with warmup, then trying to time the start and get the first 10mins pacing just right,. its much harder to perfect than long races. nice work for your first cross race this season !

My favourite race ever was a cross country. The Orion 15 (miles) in Epping Forest. The first year I did it all the regulars were 'disappointed' that it wasn't more muddy. I was a XC novice and did an OK time in road shoes. I did it again the following year, which was "normal" mud. Oh my god! I think I was about 20 minutes slower. It was still brilliant, though.

Nice to see you doing XC. Hard discipline with all those good runners participating. Also aside from your own results, it's nice to follow the team results . I like to follow the women XC from the NCAA, i follow Katelyn Tuohy and her friends from NC State, a very strong team with great depth. How do you manage to deal with those short distance races and also prepare for a marathon race?
@PhilyBowden
@PhilyBowden Год назад
I plan my running in seasons, so XC is the focus now. When I target another marathon I’ll do marathon specific training for 3-4 months leading up to it. The body adapts really well and 5k-marathon is a lot of the same types of work, just more volume for the Mara!

Eating the chicken out of a bag reminds me of when a friend and I were really hungry, and it was similar, all we could find was a full roasted chicken from a grocery store... so we tore it in half with our bare hands and ate it, I felt like a caveman, in the best way :) I need to get the "little things" locked down myself, particularly my sleep. I've been listening to an audio book while I run, about forming better habits, and yeah they definitely do add up. Thanks for the great video!

Well done Phily. You always manage to make me laugh out loud a few times every video. Very entertaining. If you are finding the new shoes a bit tight, I recommend the Altra Golden Spike. Altra are known for their foot shaped shoes that give room for the toes to spread. When putting in spikes I recommend using vaseline or grease on the threads as this stops the spikes rusting into position.
@PhilyBowden
