I'm making videos about my journey as a professional marathon runner, with my partner in crime and partner in life, otherwise known as @DanielMoves
I keep it 100% real on here, what you see is what you get, and I'm here to take you on the ride wherever it takes me: highs, lows and parts not mentionable at the dinner table all included.
Hahaha! Love seeing your cat "helping" you to limber up. I was trying to stretch my hip flexer earlier and my cat jumped up and sat on my thigh! (Sods law - now I'm relaxing on the couch, watching your video, she's nowhere to be seen - but the minute I try to do something, I'm sure she'll be there to help!)
I had pacing duties for the first time this week & absolutely completely fell in love with it! What an experience! Helping someone else crush their goal & come up with something that they didn’t think they could do was just so awesome! Going to be doing some more of that whenever I can!!!!
So why do other good runners run brilliantly when they come down in distance? Mo Farah was doing 10Ks and set a European record. It is obvious you lack speed and there has not been any improvement in say 6 years....... if your speed hasn't improved in 6 years you now know your training has been wrong and why yr 5k and 10k wont improve either but I am sure you will find excuses. You need to make changes if you want to improve on any of your races...........we all have a limit and you should ignore all the +ve BS on here, if your base speed isn't getting better you are doing something wrong and your training is wrong, all wrong. Seek changes.
Had a somewhat similar experience with running as a freshman in the big 10 this past year. I ended up leaving the team. We’ve had two coach changes one went to OSU during my summer build up and our latest coach has just been fired for the things he said and how he treated the team. Should I go back now that he’s gone? I used to be self coached and was seeing so much progress so fast but that’s a lonely grind. I still have all my eligibility but I’m practically at square one with fitness because of injuries. It would take time to be able to contribute in a league like the big 10 and I haven’t seen many coaches with that sort of patience (in my experience). I used to love running but I can’t tell if that’s just cuz of the negative experience or if it’s the way college athletics is
Not everyone is mentally strong enough to do what is required to be a champion. Dont blame the coaches for your own failures. There is also no shame in failing...very few can make the necessary sacrifices.
As Seb Coe once said, everyone can run, not everyone can run fast ! World class marathon runners can all run well at shorter distance and so many runners neglect the benefits that faster work brings.
For me mondays are reset monday. so i see it as an oppertunity to make this week better than the one before. Maybe in seeing it as a change for new beginning it might help a bit? I hope you find a way that suites you to make the mondays less bleh...
Hi Phily and Co., congrats for all the videos they are fun and so motivating, even to improve my English as well (I'm from Barcelona), It would be a great idea to rec a video about how you use the Elastic Rubber for the warm up.... or to recovery as well. Go on to 100k!!! Come On Phily!!!
8:29 - Yes, it is. I once laughed in the face of a roommate several years after I retired after he told me that he could easily keep up with the Olympic field in the 1500M, "because they're just jogging," or some similar rot. The 1500M, at this level, would KILL most people by shock.
A bit mad to throw yourself into a 1500.. but hats off you you for doing it lol ! They do so much fast work- and clearly not your diet right now. Nice work on the pacing... :)
I really appreciate you showing your initial disappointment and emotions, followed by how you flipped your perspective a little bit later! That's super helpful and insightful! Thank you for that vulnerability!
Just a comment on the editing of this interesting video. Perhaps you are using software to get under 30 minutes or something but the hundreds of tiny skips in the video makes it quite difficult to watch.
It's crazy how emotions and logic don't always work together. It sucks to feel disappointed, but it's okay to feel that way. I think it's healthy how you self talk through it. I had a similar experience running a mile, wanted so bad to break 5 minutes I'd lined up some pacing, I felt had the fitness, and I felt urgent as it was late fall and snow was about to fall. But it just wasn't so. Even though I did get a 2 second PB I still felt let down and disappointed. I guess it's part of the game and part of what makes grind meaningful. The victories can only feel so good because the failures feel bad. From the outside it's really impressive. I never felt like the first mile race of the season was anything near my potential, just because of the pain and dealing with it. It's so easy to feel panicked and give in to the body yelling, "stop you fool!". To run a small PB or anywhere near your PB on a first effort just speaks volume on the training you've done. To be at that speed without specific training shows how much stronger your aerobic engine has gotten. It compensated well for lack of preparation and training of your anaerobic engine. Really impressive.
Quite honestly, Philly, I'm not sure what you could reasonably have expected. What specific 1500 preparation have you done over the last couple of years? Answer, NIL!! How would a highly trained 1500 runner cope with the last ten miles of a marathon? Not very well, I'd suggest! Whe I was racing 1500s seriously i occasionally "raced" a 400. Did Ibenjoy it? No because I was always well beaten - but it served its purpose, it helped the 1500. you have to look at this 1500 in that light.
Best part of this, is you verbalize the entire thing, from the immediate reactionary emotions to the finish, the contemplation, the reasoning, the plan, the encouragement. Disappointment happens, but this feels like healthy approach to it, bravo. 🙌
Can you do a video for what you would do if you don't love the grind? I'm not a runner. I am legally blind and my Dr just diagnosed me with a rare painful heart condition. A few months ago after I was diagnosed I wanted something to help me stay focused and not sad all the time. All the motivational videos were not helping. I needed something out of the box. That is when I found your videos. In a crazy way, your videos helped me get up out of bed, get dressed, and do one task each day. Lol love the grind 😅 Right now, I am rebuilding my body and my mind and it's a struggle. But what do you do if you don't love grind? Anyway I love your videos. Thank you for being so honest. You are helping people like me. Thank you❤
