Gemma Whelan manages to say "Tell them how Mr Shakespeare" in a slightly different way every time, building the humour. Comedy gold.

Yes, I just love this scene and her expressions: "Tell them how, Mr Shakespeare" is now a line on a par with "Deny everything, Baldrick" for me

Upstart Crown is still one of the best media adaptations dealing with Shakespeare. Very funny and very witty

I especially liked the deliberate avoidance of the phrase that led to tittering in every school about the death of Polonious; “stabbed in the Arras.”

Brian Blessed Seems perfect for the Role of the guy on the left.. Wonder why David never asked him ? Remember his scenes in Black Adder and The Young ones ! Hes perfect for this show

In another episode, Burbage mentions one of the keys to playing Shakespeare, is to shout a lot. I think this is a veiled tribute to Brian Blessed, as he tends to do a lot of shouting in many of his roles. His voice fills whatever space he is in, so even those at the back of the house, can hear him without amplification.

Wasn’t Hamlet inspired by the death of Shakespeare’s son They seem incredibly positive about it
@hesoerus59
@hesoerus59 10 месяцев назад
There's no proof of that. The name similarity seems to be purely coincidental. Shakespeare did not come up with the name, or the main plot for that matter; he used previous sources. On the other hand, the name Hamnet was not unusual in that time, even in Shakespeare's birth place.

it's alluded to at the end of the episode, this is a bad first draft of the play and at the end of the episode they hope he never lives through the kind of tragedy that would allow him to write such a character well
@matthewgriffiths5005
@matthewgriffiths5005 7 месяцев назад
He hasn't died yet, and as someone mentioned, they say at the end that they hope they never have to live through the pain to make hamlet make semse as a tragedy. Then he dies in a later episode, and they do spend time on it, in quite a sad episode.

I'm a Yank who has loved Britcoms starting with Doctor In The House up to Catherine Tate...and beyond. But I don't get this one. And my hunch is that even if I was familiar with Shakespeare I wouldn't find it funny. Give me Fawlty Towers or Yes,Prime Minister any day!
@gamewizard1760
@gamewizard1760 Год назад
The funny is in how Shakespeare's home life is portrayed, and how it influences his writing.
@michaelehrmann-falkenau7645
To me, the problem is the choice of the target of their humour, which is the author of the best works in English literature. I think they fail to convincingly make him into a somewhat deluded playwright. I don't find anything funny about the idea of my father dying and returning as a ghost to tell me he's been murdered.
@hesoerus59
@hesoerus59 10 месяцев назад
I think it certainly makes a difference if you're familiar with his works. If this show has a fault, it is the assumption that viewers are familiar with the main plots of his plays and some details about his life (which could be the case in Britain through school education). There are also a lot of subtle references and inside jokes, so the more you know about Shakespeare and his contemporary context, the better. I believe that the show is enjoyable on its own, without a lot of background knowledge, but as someone who has read a good deal about Shakespeare and his age, I may have a blind spot there.

@@hesoerus59 I really enjoy it, but it is very niche. But then so are a zillion other things on tv. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone not familiar with Shakespeare.

i thought his character was a great addition; post-modern, self-referential meta-humor juxtaposed to a classical shakespearean setting. whoever thought of it deserves recognition.
