When you've been e-begging for years, what you need to understand is that what you have is a hobby rather than a job.

I don’t like being called a POC. I’m Asian and I remember using the term “yellow “ to describe me was considered a no-no.

Remember that guy in Europe who begged for money for an emergency but then bought tickets to Hamilton.

My exposure to Patreon when it first came out was that supporters would be an “artist’s patron.” It was a donation to keep the creator able to continue doing what they do. The subscription and premium content model caught on later. And nowadays it’s highly seen as a stable supplement to traditional ad sales.

I can’t ever imagine going out and asking strangers for money for anything. My parents taught me to find a way to earn it, even if it means washing dishes to make it.

Listening to it, I thought just one thing: "Kickstarter for a proof of concept (MVP + building basic audience), then partner with a big publisher (Dark Horse, Image, etc) and expand the IP in a possible volume 2. Focus on making money through merchandise as the IP expands, rather than relying solely on comics."

speaking of shitty page rates at a pair of large comic publishers... was on stream last night talking with artists and a few other folks who make comics and stories were shared of turning down those two big companies because of said page rates. Artists citing that small press, indie, crowdfunding creators are paying better (at least their clients anyway). Wild

Here is an idea. Get a PO Box in Manhattan and in the event that you get a meeting with Hollywood people, get a WeWork location in Manhattan for the week. In the meanwhile work out of New Jersey or Pennsylvania so you're close enough to NYC that you can be there if you need to be. Seems like a better investment than renting an office in Manhattan.

A comment like „he rambles and goes all over the place“ isn’t a criticism, it’s just a very clear and concise description of the channel. Print it on a Comics by Perch shirt and people would buy it.

I mean when you have publishers that are super cheap and telling creators things like “ get a day job” or “I’m not going to fund your lifestyle “ this is what you get. The point of a job is to make enough money to survive. If you aren’t making it at that job there is not point in working for that company so if a creator hits a publisher up or needs to crowd source fans for more money that’s their prerogative. You shouldn’t have to work a day job if the publisher is worth their salt. This idea that you need to pay your dues and slave away for nothing for years before getting paid a living wage is just insane and it’s pure gaslighting.

I learn the most during your ramblings.

You can’t pay artists and writers child size paychecks and expect them to act like adults. You get what you pay for. In order for someone to be and adult they need to be pulling down an adult sized check.

I feel like I was in a great position as I was subscribed to Wired at one time and was able to see the logic for all these things laid out. They mentioned the inherent “wisdom in crowds” and how tech was “democratizing” and the scenario was described in which things would just work out once enough people were linked together that we could turn all these people linked together into something of value. Yet in recent years I haven’t really seen much of a change to the incentives surrounding comic book creators. The money in the industry seems to just get worse, people should do anything besides just work for the big two. Obviously the future foretold in Wired was just half the truth. I feel for creative people dealing with this stuff but the real culture war has always been between haves and have-nots and so many people made themselves useful bashing other have-nots hoping the haves would help them out. Turns out they were the real class traitors this whole time.

The best thing I’ve read by DC in years is the collected Tom King/Greg Smallwood “The Human Target.” It reads like a fantastic Indie story.

I wonder did they change it to POC because the way it was before the acronym was “CP”, and that wound confuse a lot of people and make them think they’re bad.
