I went to a bone doc about ten years ago and he told me my spine was a mess (played hockey my entire life), a couple years ago started deadlifting seriously, got up to 409 (at 57 years old), and am maintaining, my back has never felt stronger, my golf game has improved, my attitude, my hockey is even getting better again. Nothing in the world beats strength training. ( I have been a gym guy since 18 tho, almost 40 years, so I'm not a stranger to exercise. IT breaks my heart to see guys my age looking like broken down grandpas, and thinking life is already over. It's well documented now that the best antidote to aging is strength training

"It teaches them that they can hurt... and still move." That has been THE most important lesson as an SS noob with years of non-specific low-back pain. Pushing past fear of getting hurt has been the hardest part of being a novice, and my back already feels 98% better as I've worked on technique and slowly added 70lbs to my squat. They're both curmudgeons for sure, but I'm grateful to Rip & Sully's books and attitudes for the push.

Yup, sounds about right. As a first aid instructor one of the first things I tell my students is that in about two weeks they'll forget 80% of what they learned in the class, so it's better to just focus on the most important things. You probably won't remember the different ways to tie a sling for each injury, but you better know how to do CPR In the same vein, as a trainer you might not remember the minutiae of programming intermediate and elite athletes, but you better know how to teach a proper squat

Byron, no, having a Starting Strength (SS) coach tell you how to fix you squat costs between $150 and $225 depending on the coach (see specific training camps), the seminar is much more extensive than that. The seminar is for people who want to (or think they want to) become a SS coach. Considering the combined knowledge and experience offered in both coaching and lecture at a SS seminar, $900 is probably cheap.

Weekly sessions for 6 months didn't help at all until I saw a sports therapist who watched me perform a few lifts and told me I wasn't controlling by shoulder blade correctly and how to fix it. 10mins to fix what the physio couldn't in 6 months.

I've seen "functional fitness" areas (aka Crossfit) make their way into commercial gyms, for better or worse. Why couldn't the same be done for a starting strength barbell model of training? I would think SS would have more appeal because it actually works. Also, did crossfit narrowcast initially? Because its casting is annoyingly broad nowadays.
@lutze5086
@lutze5086 7 лет назад
David Rusinak I think its the marketed lifestyle and team atmosphere thing that draws people in, with more of a focus on muscular endurance/cardio than strength (with which people have all kinds of weird associations, meatheads etc)
@larrymasterspowerbuildingc4477
I understand how Mark said that it's a noble idea. if we can get people past the stage where they get over how hard it is and get them to want to stick out a lifestyle of learning to use barbells, not drinking on the weekends, feeling insecure and pride beaten, finding a gym that lets you do it properly (most gyms are quiet as fucking libraries now), risking injury and surgery, feeling beat up as fuck on a daily basis while having to go to work and raise families, fatigued to the max, hungry, having to eat 5-6 times per day, spending the $$$ to eat 5/6 times per day, and so many other things that you MUST do to properly strength train, then we are onto something. but if you strength train seriously, it is to the gym with you, butterflies in your belly because you will get tested seriously every day. you gotta change how you eat. your clothes will not fit one way or the other...it's time consuming to learn and more time consuming the more you learn. people just want to be seen in thier new gym gear, check out the opposite sex, cross it off a list or join for a second at new year's or a birthday, and think, 'well, i tried." I think that there should be a new model. fuck the model that tries to get the corporate big shots to get on board. they don't care, nor do they even understand what is happening at this seminar. We need a ramped up plan that brings the realities of strength training to people en mass. Try to snag as many that are on the fence with the truth, and teach them how to not continue to being dead in the water. I think that that is happening more. just gonna take about 10 generations of lifters and strength enthusiasts to get that 5% of the people to turn to 10%

I don't agree with the comment about physical therapy (10:32) that it's just a way to bill insurance. I had significant issues with my neck 5 years ago and my physical therapist has helped me so much since then. She also gave me confidence to join a gym 2 years ago, and my quality of life has improved so much since having a regular workout routine. I am sure there are a lot of bad PT's out there, but I have had lots of success with PT.

So I had a nasty back spasm 4 days ago (still numb below waist and sore as fuck) from squatting, as soon as I'm pain free do I get back under the bar? I've had a 12mm herniation in my L5/S1 that's resolved itself(apparently that means it's easier to make my back spasm), gym owner says it's because I didn't brace hard enough, does that sound about right to you?

I understand that a lot of people don't want to (or can't) train strength, so they go to commercial gyms to fuck around. Fair. But the true problem is that a lot of cities (like mine) have no single proper place to train strength --there are ONLY commercial gyms, with just one rack for three hundred clients. Luckily though, most of the time it's empty despite gym being crowded.

I think it is kind of a ridiculous hot-take that Starting Strength is incompatible with the majority of gym goers and commercial gyms. I understand it may not fit the business model of those gyms, but it my help retention of memberships and make returns on investment. If you just look at strength RU-vid there are many channels with millions of views on how to do basic lifts, how to program, and more. People want to improve themselves. That is the basic reason people buy gym memberships. I think this is the reason why channels that BROADcast (lol) similar information (Alan Thrall, Eric Helms, Omarlsuf etc.) in more condensed forms are more successful on this platform.

They don't want to teach barbells, they had that for years in original gyms and corporate gyms got rid of that. They don't want to pay coaches who know what they are doing, and don't want to be competent and their job that is not how corporate world works. Novices don't need accessories. What's the point in doing a farmers carry if you can't even deadlift 315. Once people become intermediate lifters, and have a strong foundation it's beneficial to do supplementary exercises and accessories, for strength, size and health. But if you're weak, you're only going to be able to famer's carry something that weighs like a couple of bags of groceries, which is a waste of time. You need some baseline strength before you can get any use out of other movements.

I like Rip but he really has no idea what he's talking about sometimes. E.g. propagating the myth that you always loose muscle in a cut at 7:50 ... this has been debunked (e.g. see Greg Nuckols)

its a scientific fact that with cutting you always lose a bit of both tissues, wether being fat or muscle there's always gonna be a loss in both. This Greg Nuckols probably don't know a lot tbh

Petter Do you know who Greg Nuckols is? He was a world record in powerlifting and very clever guy. His website is well worth checking out his website, www.strongerbyscience.com I've never seen him say you won't lose muscle on a cut, but you can't say he doesn't know much.

sorry but it is a scientific fact and you have misunderstood. When you gain weight, you gain some of all the types of body mass including bone, blood, gristle and all the other miscellaneous stuff as well as fat and the different types of muscle. Same again when you lose some weight. It is impossible not to, it's how physiology works. Have you not have body composition scans done yourself? Did not hear the important detail that you can tweak the proportions of those losses and gains somewhat. And that depends on your physical activity and your diet.

just means he has a brain. Only an idiot wants to tear down the country even if that is of short term benefit to them it will not be in the long run. That is why the 3rd world is the 3rd world, the people are not smart and run the country poorly. If you do the same here it will be just as bad.
