The Common GM EVAP Code How to Diagnose and Repair

I Cover how to diagnose and repair that pesky EVAP code. It is much easier than you think and can easily be fixed at home. The p0455 large leak, the p0449 or p0446 vent control circuit and even the p0456 small leak codes are very common issues found on today's cars.

The newer trucks have the filter and valve seperated by a length of hose don't they?

Yes and the ones previous to that get updated to the hose type I believe.

I updated and moved mine cause it's 4x4, 98 miles later, check engine light.. changed canister, same thing, then purge valve, same thing .. so the light stays on and if you have over half a tank it has no power

From what I gather, the $200 fix GM suggests is just as prone to failure, so your better off just replacing that little $20 piece and get a year or two out of it as opposed to spending 10 times as much

My 2007 Silverado has both codes, pretty sure it's the evap solenoid by the fuel tank. The guy I bought it from had a grass cutting business, but the truck just now has 75k miles. It was very dirty underneath. I had both codes associated with this issue, po449 po445, which is the vapor purge valve on top of the intake manifold. I'm gonna change it as well. I usually do a resistance test on stuff, but the old timer I bought the truck from had run over a lot of open ground when he was running his landscaping business, and the top of the old valve was almost off. I've seen a bunch of videos on this very issue and yours is the most detailed, thanks!

Great overview of that evap component. Last year had a P0446, since that canister was the most likely issue, I simply replaced it for $25. Of course that wasn't the issue. It was the $35 fuel tank pressure sensor which failed. It sits on top of fuel pump. In hindsight, since I got the AFM/DOD tuned off, could have just turned off the evap diagnostics and never would worry about again. I needed to pass emissions while figuring this out: cleared the codes, drove truck for 2 weeks while repeatedly topping the tank, until scanner said 'ready' for all but 1 test, and it passed.

@bobcajunwon9552

fassel elder been awhile: could be a few things, cracked and leaking lines. Remove that rear canister, clean out dirt or cobwebs, apply 12v to the pins, listen for clicking, blow through it with and without 12v. Do same thing to the evap solenoid at the engine. Or, just find a guy to tune that feature out.

@The_Chad_Davis
@The_Chad_Davis 2 месяца назад
@williamroberts4759 Topping the tank off means filling to capacity. The idea is that in a close environment, the more fuel you have the less vapor. Hence, the less the evap system has to work to vent off vapor.

Great video on the simplicity of changing the canister, but why doesn't any of the youtube posters show how to work through the problem of a P0449 code when it isn't the canister but truly is an intermittent vent control circuit issue, and done without a 1000 plus dollar scanner. I am running out of electricians tape to cover the MIL and refuse to buy any more canisters.🤣
@CrazedPerformanceRepair
@CrazedPerformanceRepair 3 года назад
I did show it, this could have easily been done with a cheap code reader. All I did was pull and clear codes. Usually the intermittent vent control is sticky vent valve. Test it with power just like I did in this video and you will get it figured out.

EVAP codes are usually a easy fix. If the vehicle is new enough they can just be shut off in the tune.

Avalanche not a truck? God Dam i hate when people say that. I've hauled 22' LVLs (3) from the lumber yard to the job with no ladder rack. Can't do that with any other truck. 16 is about the max length for a pickup w/o ladder rack. And I can also carry 5 people to lunch. And guess what, the interior dash and controls are those that were put in all the chevy trucks. No difference there. Just because the bed is attached to the cab. Give me a break i once put 2-55gal drums in the back of my 1500 avy and showed up at a jobsite when they had just finished pouring and I had the drive fill my two drums. Both drums overflowed and concrete was all over the back of my truck. But I drove it home(35 in a 55) 4 miles and poured it in my forms. Cars don't do that. SUV can't do that. Can't haul the wheeler in an suv. And with the duratrac tires I put on it, my avy goes much farther off road that most trucks. Not a truck. Then what is it??? Get over the marriage of cab and bed. Its not a unibody and its incredibly useful you can take the woman out camping and throw a matress in it with tonneau on.

@@suttonshiver1317 any EVAP code should be a p04xx code. That looks like a transmission related code to me. I'd be surprised if that's what it is.

Besides that, isn't that thing still under warranty?

Not really. One could turn it off but typically once you understand it, they are easy to fix and usually not that expensive to fix either.

@@CrazedPerformanceRepair I have a p0442 code that won’t go away on my 2007 Chevy Avalanche. I replaced the purge valve and the gas cap but the check engine light keeps coming back on
