Michel Bauwens is a theorist of civilizational transition, exploring a higher logic of societal structure which seeks to incorporate the positive functions of markets and states, without vesting the future in systems like capitalism or communism as traditionally understood.

Really interesting and insightful discussion. I appreciate the way that Tim pressed the metaphysical question: what must we agree about in order to act collectively? I also appreciate how Michel ended the conversation by bringing focus to the question of collective land-ownership and what that might look like in practice. I think these two questions must be asked together, and so I'm glad to see them united in this conversation.

I’m glad I found this channel. Great work, and looking forward to engaging with more of your videos and guests.

Michel Bauwens is a great mind and a hard worker, and I was very glad to see him here discussing his work. I enjoyed his thoughts on the role of the “commons” in civil life, suggesting that societies have formed and gained self-conception relative to their common spaces. “The commons” is a glimpse of how people treat strangers and people they do not know, which I think does tend to say a lot about the kind of people we are, and if there is no “commons,” the soul of a people is hard to read. I also really liked the point that societies don’t evolve but more so “transvalue”-I think that is indeed the case. I also appreciate, Tim, the questions you asked to stay in the realm of the concrete: I think that’s very important for this on-going conversation. Well done to you both!

Thanks for the comment O.G. -- yes there's a lot there to explore about the nature of the connection between 'commons' and 'soul'. And perhaps connections to be made between 'ensoulment' a la James Hillman and Zak Stein, and perhaps 'common life' with reference to Hume as you often draw in. From this perspective it is unsurprising that a breakdown in appreciation for commons is interwoven with the relative immaturity of humans moving through ensoulment process. Also the tension between 'evolution' and 'transvaluation' is an important thread to work with too, particularly in the context of identity. I look forward to your participation in this series over the coming months and beyond.

@@Voicecraft I was listening to Mr. Stein on “ensoulment” just the other night-I always find his work very impressive. And I’m certainly obsessed with Master Hume, who indeed I believe is extremely relevant to this discussion (though I’m biased). Our “commons” is the foundation of our rationality, and if we lack a “commons,” our rationality will end up devouring us…And absolutely on the evolution/transvaluation point, which I believe Deirdre McCloskey is great on. All very important work!

aren't you aspiring towards a communitarian dynamic? Distributed cognition in the spirit of transforming adversarial economics into a more generative opponent processing dynamic. Do you have any room in your conversation for complexification of the productive process because there is an opponent processing aspect to law/principle based markets.

I like the opponent processing angle -- that makes a lot of sense to bring in. What do you mean by a 'complexification of the productive process'? Not quite sure how to address your first line. There's a bit missing from the context of communication. This whole podcast can be seen as an affirmation of interest in the movement toward viable participation in communities and through communities the broader terrain. I don't consider myself anything close to an expert in economics (obviously) and want to approach this learning and exploration process with some fresh interest.
