The Complete Cross Guard Guide

The cross guard is one of the most versatile and fun guards to play in BJJ. You can use it from so many positions and it opens up sweeps, submissions, and back takes. In addition it is very easy to hit matrix, crab ride, and ankle locks as well. This video I go through my favorite set ups and attacks from the system as well as demonstrate the techniques in sparring and include my self coaching my students at Fighter Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden. If you have any questions or requests please comment and let me know.

Hands down your complete guide videos are the best pieces of Bjj instructional content I have ever seen. This is the type of stuff I expect from seminars. Must be insane to be coached by you everyday. Please keep these coming. One day I hope to have a game as complete as yours and be able to teach it back to others

Thought it'd try this today. I already use the omoplata sweep when someone stands in closed guard but can lose it when someone postures. The detail of using the heel first is incredible. Hit it first time of asking in training today. My hero

Wow huge compliment! I’m happy the videos have had that big of an affect. I think a lot of it is that I focus on the positions as a whole which gives overall context, rather than going deep on 1 technique which can leave you confused if you don’t know where that technique fits in with the rest of the position and guard as a whole.

I really love this! I've been having some great success with this, but also found some trouble lately with two scenarios when they are standing. 1) Person grabs the free leg + removes the elbow space or keeps the elbow at an angle (blocking the omoplata). So I end up in a weird situation where I can't seem to do anything. 2) Big strong guy reaches down with free hand gets grip on back of pants and pulls up, stacking me.

So comprehensive and easy to understand Jon! One question though -- If they're in a low combat base such that their knee on the same side as the sleeve you grab is up and that knee-elbow connection is tight, can you still apply the attacks? Doesn't seem like you'd even be able to get that underhook on that leg. Maybe that opens them up for an arm drag instead? Thanks for all your great content!

Love cross guard, but recently I'm getting countered a lot by standing opponents. Jon, how do you deal with standing opponents who put heavy hip pressure forward and basically kneel on your chest to kill your nearside leg? Eg if you're cross gripping right to right, your left leg is the nearside/attacking leg, and then hip forward and try to kneel on your chest with their right knee?
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 3 года назад
Well if they stand talk I usually matrix, if they are putting their knee on your chest like that, then you are probably not holding tight enough around the shin if you grab at their calf shin area it’s hard for them to put their knee on you, can you send me a video of you working the technique on IG and I can look at it

Your DLR game seems to rely more on the double sleeve game or using the far sleeve lepri style. When I watched Mikey Musumeci's instructional on DLR its mostly focused at least in the beginning on the classic heel and collar grip. What would you say is the pro and cons of both styles, and why have you choosen yours? Also; how significant difference do you think the pants grip vs the heel grip makes? I feel the more I play around with it , it feels almost like two different guards.
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 3 года назад
Both are essential, in general I don’t lock my self into one style of guard they usually all have purposes and utilities when mixed into a broader open guard game. I like the ankle a lot when I flip them over head with collar ankle to go for bolo, I like the pant a lot when I don’t have a grip with my right hand. If I get a grip with my right hand I will often go back to ankle but it depends a bit about what guard I want to play. Ankle grip without a right hand grip can be easily kicked out of if you fight an athletic opponent.
@micheldavidovich6940

Hey Jon! Awesome content as always! I have a cool setup for this guard when playing collar sleeve on a standing opponent and your opponent grabs your collar hand and breaks the grip I immediately grab their cross sleeve and enter cross guard. I have a recurring problem though, and it is that most opponents keep a very strong posture and I’m not able to bend their leg when going matrix. Do you have any tips for that situation? I should tell you I’m quite lacking in the flexibility department 😂
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 3 года назад
Yeah you don’t need to bend their leg when you do the matrix I actually prefer when their leg is straight it makes it easier to spin around and go straight to the back. I talk about it in my last matrix video a bit,

As the passer, the obvious answer to passing would be, “don’t let them get cross sleeve in the first place,” but if you mess up and they get it, are there any options to effectively pass this? Been having a little trouble here. Thanks!
