The Complete Evolution of Leviathan 

The "traditional" summons are relegated as airships in FFXII. Leviathan became the Dreadnought Leviathan and shares the common colour scheme of white, silver, metallic blue that traditional Leviathan have.

Leviathan is my favourite summon by far! Sea serpents are extremely cool, and it has some very interesting appearances. Like, it has people live inside its digestive system for freakin YEARS, just noms one of Exdeath's minions, or has two heads and a really slapping soundtrack. I really hope it's featured in FFXVI.

Never understood why Levi wasn't in FFX dispite water being one of the four main elements of magic and Spira being a major water based world.

I find it rather strange that Leviathan has no association with Behemoth in Final Fantasy, after all they are both considered giant beasts in their respective territories (one in the seas and the other on land). An interesting concept they could incorporate would be a personal rivalry or feud between giant beasts, adding ziz (the giant beast of the skies) as some kind of trinity. Making them want to transform the planet to expand their respective territories (similar to the conflict between groudon and kyogre), wanting to become the supreme beast by defeating the other two (mythologically explaining the natural catastrophes in that world), or the three of them turned into brothers who, after creating the animals that inhabit the world, find themselves frequently boasting about their creations.

Here's some lore on FFXV's Leviathan: Some of the background stuff hinted that she is the unofficial protector of Altissia, but mostly just a deity with incredible power that the citizens both feared and respected as told by the first secretary of Accordo of the water locked nation. Its a monster yet a powerful god-like being that the thought of summoning her to speak to her would invoke a rage and wrath of the goddess of the sea, fearing for the Altissian citizens lives she was reluctant to even allow Lunafreya to do the summoning to wake Leviathan up. In the concepts of FFvsXIII she was suppose to be the first one created for the story and said to be very wise, or "Close to God". The FFXV Kingsglaive movie had two creatures in an aquarium very similar to the sea goddess.

Levitation will always be that terror of the deep that defies gravity as it ascends the heavens to command a Whirlpool to decend upon its foes! I've always loved its beautiful color schemes and wondered if Shiva and Levi would ever combine their powers together?

My main Leviathan memories: FFVII: Playing the demo in a Toy's 'R' Us. It was basically a boss fight you couldn't lose, and Leviathan was an option just to show you how awesome it was. It was awesome. FFXI: Getting to Qufim Island the first time. This was just after the NA release and when summons were introduced. I saw a Japanese player walking around with Leviathan was following him. I ended up getting aggro and dying. Worth it!

My favourite thing about Leviathan is that he appears on the map of the Carribean in Kingdom Hearts 3, and Sora's ship is his namesake and has it as a figurehead. So Leviathan could be hanging out with Jack Sparrow right now. Shame we never got to actually see it but it's a great Easter egg

Leviathan deserved to be an aeon in ffx. Water doesn't have a summon like the other elements, which just isn't fair.

I still remember Rinoa summoning leviathan in the ff8 pizza hut demo in north America. Probably the main reason I wanted the game. It was awe inspiring.

Great video! Leviathan has been one of my favorite bosses to fight in FFXIV. The sea serpent design is epic and I've always really liked the Sahagin lore in Eorzea too. Seeing all the primals in Endwalker was ABSOLUTELY one of the big, jump-out-of-my-chair high points in the expansion, too! One hopes that Leviathan will regain some of the respect and power it once had! And failing that, maybe the next Final Fantasy/Monster Hunter crossover can send Leviathan to kick some ass, haha -

Leviathan are my favorite summon alongside Phoenix. Simply because HE IS KING OF THE OCEAN, HE WAS MADE TO RULE THE WAVE ACROSS THE SEVEN SEAS!

I never understood why Leviathan (or any water summon) was not present in Final Fantasy X. It's the only of the 4 main elements to not have a summon related (Fire-Ifrit/Ice-Shiva/Lightning-Ixion). More strangely, there were 2 non-elemental summons in Valefor and Bahamut. Leviathan could have been right at home protecting Besaid in Valefor's place, and maybe relocate Valefor to another location early in the game. At any rate, it's really bizarre that a game with so much focus on water (arguably the most to date) left out such an iconic summon.

I like FF9's version of Leviathan the most. Mostly because it does my favourite version of Tsunami. The way Leviathan flies towards the enemy with a giant tidal wave behind her. Badass!

Fun fact about Leviathan. During the Leviathan fight in XV, I was straight trippin on mushrooms. One of the best boss fights I've ever had, never felt more like I was actually there! lmaoo

Honestly i think Leviathan is somewhat held back by what it is: an unimaginably gargantuan sea monster I would say no FF game has done it quite as much justice as XV but even then it came with too many restrictions for it to become more popular, but i have high hopes that as technology improves Square will soon give us a truly grand appearance for this legendary summon and it will hopefully thrust it into the mainstream along other more common summons

Leviathan to me is my second favorite summon behind Bahamut and honestly I’m still confused as to why he never appears in FF10 or FF10-2 since the ocean plays a huge role in the world of Zanarkand and Spira.

I think the only other place leviathan would appear you didn't mention would be Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Onmina, not much is different though, I think a new move it uses but that's it.

I am glad its always big af. In lore apparently he streches around the world! Also the phone game levi had a pretty solid move set aswell different from other games!

A small thing about leviatan in X, it might not exactly have the name, but ut's theme is still pressent in the Evrae fought when arriving Bevelle. Granted it has similarities with other creatuers, but it's design and charcteristics are there.

That battle with Leviathan in XV still has me in awe. While the others were more testing Noctis, Leviathan was clearly not in the mood and ready to kill and it showed. By far, Leviathan is and always will be one of my favourite summons.

Leviathan was also in Mobius FF, can be fought after being summoned by Meia (as a collab event celebrating the release of Vanadiel monk job card for WoL) only in multiplayer mode, as far as I remember. It didn't appear in the story mode. Due to gameplay reasons, players cannot summon anything, even when using Meia or any summoner jobs unless the ability cards we draw from the Gacha include a summon-related ability and had it equipped to our setup. There is also an end game area where we farm summons' abilities to use as our own but I forgot if it was Leviathan or Famfrit which was available (most likely to be Famfrit). In the battle, it had the similar appearance and movesets to the one in FF11 as well and it had a normal break bar. (Only Ultima weapon was kinda hard to break in multiplayer mode since we can not damage the break bar)

Leviathan, in my opinion, is one of the coolest looking summons. Especially in FFVII, where it is a towering Kaiju. Tsunami should be represented in a more catastrophic manner. In reality out of all natural disasters a tsunami will take the most lives. Look no further than Boxing Day or 2011 Japan where the wave was catastrophic. Apologies went off subject lol

Brave Exvius: Missing Information; If I’m not mistaken, after you defeat Leviathan a 3rd time, they make reference to her being the spirit of Luca and Nichol’s mother. Luca was a Water priestess that prayed to Leviathan and Nichol, her brother and member of the main cast.

Leviathan was not a Lucavi in FFT, but it was a summon avaliable to the Summoner job.

I still think it was a crime that Leviathan didn't show up in FF X Also in FFIX you should have mentioned that apparently Leviathan had been proven too difficult to control earlier in the history of the Espers and so they sealed him in the Ilfar Tree,w here Garnet finds him.

The shipwreck in IV may have been accidental, but I'd like to think Leviathan intentionally sent the shipwrecked party members to their respective destinations. After all, they wound up in pretty far-flung corners of the world and had pretty important roles to play in those places. Of course, we already know that he took Rydia with him to train in the Feymarch, after which she snatched the party's victory from the jaws of defeat when she saved Cecil at the last second from Golbez's shadow dragon and then drove back Golbez with her summons, thus bringing about the very situation Golbez was presumably trying to prevent by ordering the destruction of Mist in the first place. But on to the more theoretical ones: Starting off, I'd say it's fairly easy to believe that Leviathan is behind Cecil washing up on the shores of Mysidia and thereby setting out on his journey to Paladinhood. Cecil was already a decently notable figure in the battles against Golbez, a just man willing to battle his own former comrades in defense against their aggressions, such as his frontline role in the defense of Fabul. If Leviathan had been keeping an eye on Rydia after the tragedy at Mist, he would even have seen Cecil's nobility firsthand when he protected her at the Kaipo inn. He also likely understood (being the king of powerful elemental entities and thus likely having a very intimate understanding of the elemental dynamics and hierarchies) that Cecil would be unable to defeat Golbez by fighting darkness with darkness, and needed to take up the holy sword eventually. Besides, the shipwreck wasn't especially close to shore, so an unconscious Cecil clad in full metal armor probably would have sunk and drowned unaided, and I'd call it particularly poetic to think that he cast off his dark armor so soon after it was almost finally the death of him. More of a stretch, though, is assuming that Leviathan is enough of a chessmaster to know that Yang would end up in Baron and obtain the waterway key by becoming an enforcer for Baron thanks to easily-cured amnesia, or especially enough to know that Edward's harp-playing would start the chain of events leading to Cecil going underground and fighting Golbez at the Dwarven Castle, so perhaps we can chalk that up to him sending them anywhere just to keep them alive and hoping they could find a way to make things work out. Of course, all of this is largely speculation (and admittedly built on a fair few assumptions on what Leviathan knows or can do), and I haven't read the Japanese-only text, so I have no idea if I'm contradicting any of it. So pardon if this doesn't hold water (hah), but I like the idea of the King of the Eidolons being a sort of Gandalfesque figure that puts vital pieces in motion behind the scenes.

I could have sworn that Leviathan did in fact make it into Final Fantasy Dissidia as well as Dissidia duo decem as a summons, I was pretty sure that it’s art worth when summon was the Leviathan from Final Fantasy eight and an older one that looks like a white worm, I believe from Final Fantasy three but I could be mistaken. Please confirm.

Leviathan was moonlighting as an Eldar Dragon in Monster Hunter, that is why it was not around a lot in Final Fantasy.

Leviathan is one of the cooler summons. It's a pity s/he has been reduced to a mid-tier ranking from having originally been near top tier with Bahamut. Hoping you will also make an episode for one-off summons in this series. There have been some cool ones that have only been used in a single main line entry.

Personally, I blame water being difficult to render realistically as the reason why Leviathan is slowly disappearing from the franchise.

In FFX, Sin was basically Leviathan.

I read Dawn of the Future pre-story of chapter XV by Eishima Jun! of course, I recognize Lunafrena as is and not in the English language. I have Tifa's High Grade Armor along with Faris, Rydia, Leonhart and Shadow (my two avatars), Shantotto, Vaan, Fran and Ya•shi's.

I loved the way 15 did summons. I just wish they were more readily usable and not random. With how large they were imagine summoning them like X and controlling them. Gold. And why couldn't you use Bahamut!? Why!? Summons are my favorite aspect of any final fantasy. That's why X and twelve (I'm excluding online games cause I don't pay them) are my favorite games. Bahamut never looked more cool, in my opinion, than in 15. The scene with Leviathan in 15 was so bad ass.
