Bro this series has been incredible. Appreciate it man. Wanting to get more into EDM and Dubstep recently as there are just so many hip hop producers and I feel I can't be as creative. Picked up serum like a month ago and the inspiration and knowledge you've given me is crazy.

Compression reduces volume. As signal volume crosses the threshold, it starts compressing the audio above that threshold according to the ratio (e.g. you need to raise input 2 dB to get 1 dB increase in output). So the volume is reduced, but just for the loud parts of the signal. It's compressing the DYNAMIC RANGE of the signal. You use gain (commonly called "makeup gain") to compensate, so after restoring the output so the compressed high volume in the output matches the uncompressed high volume in the input, effectively you've brought up all the LOW volumes so more of the signal is louder; that's why the compressed audio seems louder overall. "Knee" is how harsh the compression kicks in at the threshold; a "weak knee" will start compressing before the threshold, but not as much as the ratio above the threshold. Attack is how long the compressor takes to kick in; with super low attack time you'll lose the transients, e.g. on drums. Release is how long the compressor takes to "reset" after the input signal falls below the threshold.

If anyone is trying to google it, it's "Haas" effect (not anything to do with "house"). It's a few ms mismatch between left and right channel, so you still perceive it as one sound, but it sounds wider than if the same audio was hitting both ears at the exact same time.

Your using 2 stock plugins in ableton @ 27:20 but I cant see what they are, What 2 plugins are you using to automatically arpeggiate the Arp you're making in Serum

Yo, I was trying to make the exact same sound as you did in 19:18, but something is wrong. Yours is just different, more deep. When you've added envelope 3 it start to sound different than mine (20:00). And I was doing the exact same thing, I even used the same numbers as you did. You have this loud pluck with lows, having this surfing vibe, mine is like flat and really silent with no depth. You did something to that sound that isn't visible on screen or something? Because I just cannot do this no matter what I do. It can be that I have normal speakers and not good monitors?

How did you set the key while you were making the noises at the end? This is an ableton trick that is hard to find!
@marc.lepage
@marc.lepage 2 года назад
The C Minor effect in Ableton is just mapping each of the 12 MIDI notes as input, so they don't just go to the 12 notes as output, but fall onto the C minor scale. In practical terms, it means he's removed some of his keys from his keyboard, so whatever chord he plays, it maps onto C minor. (So he can't hit the "wrong" keys.)
