The Simpson's Barney Gumble has a pretty simple timeline, he was the town drunk, he went sober for a while and then he fell off the wagon. But if we take a closer look into his history, we can find there have been quite a few times where he attempted sobriety, his return to alcohol was much more complicated than it seems, and Homer seems to play a big role in his alcoholism. Let's jump right in, this is the complete history of Barney Gumble's drinking problem!
The first complete history of the channel! I've always been a little confused as to where Barney's sobriety ended. It was always a bit of a blur for me so I wanted to look it up, and I had good reason to be confused, it looks like the writers were confused as well lol. @@JediMasterBaiter I believe when the writers were first planning out the show, the idea was that Barney owned the bowling alley. but when they started to flesh him out as a character more over the first couple of seasons, they realised it made no sense for a "pathetic drunk" like Barney to be a business owner. but the Bowlarama had already appeared in the show by that point with his name on it, so they were stuck with it. I guess they decided to have a relative of Barney own it instead, and it's just named after him for some reason, maybe uncle Al really loves his nephew or something.

I always felt sorry for how pathetic Barney was as a character. When they revealed he was a scholar before Homer ruined his life, I really felt sorry for him. They honestly should have quietly retired him as a character after making him sober.

Very thorough chronology on Barney's drinking, sobriety and "flip-flopping" period - I didn't realize how much Barney went back and forth during that time before returning to alcohol. Whether drinking, smoking, eating, or any addiction, some people will "yo-yo" back and forth between extremes, depending how they feel about their life. So at least this is realistic to those for whom the struggle is never over. But good thing they never promised a Beatle that Barney would quit drinking permanently! 😉

True story: I was a student at Villanova when Barney stole Homer's car and then gave a speech at the school. Or maybe it was a street corner. Regardless, the school went nuts over this. It made our paper. People were amused and befuddled. Later it turned out that this was a parody of Andy Richter, who gave a talk at Villanova a year earlier. This was pretty anticlimactic. Anyway, we have more NCAA championships than Gudger College, so there's that.

3:44 - Non-alcoholic drinks aren't 100 alcohol free. They still have very little alcohol in them. Barney's body is possibly alcohol-sensitive that low amounts can relaspe him.

anyone remember the character bios section of the simpsons website? it was styled like a filing cabinet, with files for all the characters. each file had interactive elements. barney's had an empty coffee cup and a full beer mug and a picture of drunk barney. clicking the cups would empty the beer mug, fill the coffee cup and change the picture. i think the site itself is lost media

I enjoyed that arc where Barney went sober for a whole season. It was a chance to explore a deeper side of his character than burps and drunk jokes. I do remember feeling a little disappointed when he relapsed.

Sober Barney is the one thing introduced in _Zombie Simpsons_ I liked. My father died from metastasized bladder cancer, and my sister has plenty of her own health problems from alcoholism, so I'm legitimately mad they went back on this. But I'm not surprised, really; nihilism's _Zombie Simpsons_ in a nutshell. I'm just very, extremely, disappointed.

Mostly cause I like how you call him the town drunk but in a funny way. 😁 and I love how you did your intro when you said today where going look 👀 at Barney’s first beer 🍺 to his drunken final years, this is the complete history of Barney’s drinking problem. Приятный голос и приятный для глаз монтаж, хороший формат я считаю, да и плюсом здесь есть субтитры что помогает в автопереводе хорошо и понятно перевести к примеру на тот же самый русский, на котором я разговариваю. Я подписываюсь на канал, вы подбираете действительно интересные темы на которые мало кто обращает внимание, но зато на это интересно смотреть. И у меня есть идея для следующих видео роликов, можете рассказать про истории второстепенных персонажей, к примеру тот же самый джереми фридман(подросток с писклявым голосом) он довольно недооценённый персонаж, которому не хватает внимания! Barney was so weak to alcohol that his life would've been ruined either way. If he didn't become a drunk before college, he would've become one during college, and he would've ended up as a drop-out with a ludicrously giant debt. Homer just helped him avoid the worst possible outcome.

The ironic thing is that Homer peer pressured Barney into drinking and Barney turned into an even worse alcoholic than Homer is. At least Homer can still hold down a job and still has a family life. Barney messed up his entire life!

Great video Unfortunately, there is a spot missing. In S6 Ep22 'Round Springfield, Barney was completely sober!.....for 15 minutes.

I Think everyone know a "Barney", for me Is my uncle, he's honest and hard-working man, but alcohol distorted him in a pathetic alcoholic business man who becomes a burden for our family, he addiction is so strong that he will literally drink anything trying to get drunk, and has already drinked things like paint remover and gasoline. He's been in this addiction for at least 30 years, now that cirrhosis is catching up he won't be around for much longer, but makes me wonder how healthy and long life he could have lived, because took 30 years of addiction to destroy his liver, now he's a dead man walking waiting for his organ to fail, and stills goes to the bar on every opportunity

With the Harvard bound history , his return to form in astronaut training and his great film making there was always the joke that he was a massive stupid drunk that was blocking his true potential where he was very competent physically and mentally . Even with his singing he was the best and he was great as the plow king. When they sobered him up before you could see he was strong without alcohol and could kick arse particularly in ‘deep space Homer and it was hinted that he had hidden depths of intelligence in ‘Homer to the bat’ as he argues his favourite British prime minister etc . Looord Palmerstone. However when they sobered him up for long term they did nothing with him , they had him pathetic and not as competent , he learnt how to fly the helicopter and he saved the day but then they just had him dulled down , drinking coffee and not being drunk but having nothing to him. It was a big part of his character that he would have shone brightly without alcohol and then they did nothing g with him . They should have had him train to be a lawyer or to run his own company or something , take over form his uncle at the Bowling ally even or hook up with another character. But yeah what one of the last times he was sober he just worked for a company holding a sign esssh I think they should do an episode where the characters from deep space Homer offer Barney another chance to better himself , he’s confused and can’t remember who they are so they send him a video of him training and succeeding at the tasks they did before and it opens his eyes.

I love Barney so much and I'm glad to see someone cover him so extensively! I wish he got to be sober more often. There is a lot the writers could do with him... but they just don't. I just want him to be happy. Also he's damn cute. Hehehehe round boy
