The Judge Synder thing is a very hard to crack case. He switches skin tones so frequently in the early seasons it feels like either the writers didn't know whether to make him yellow or black (or the animators were never told). In recent years he's been consistently drawn with black skin, and it's safe to assume it'll stay like that. But do we even know if this was the original intent or not?
Moleman always seemed like he changed shading due to the lighting of his surroundings, but he seems to be the ONLY character bound by these rules. his skin is like super sensitive to light and varies greatly in appearance as the lighting shifts. hm haha i guess a 'mole man' would be hyper sensitive to light. my canonical explanation is he's just often unexplainedly sopping wet when you see him, and it makes his skin look darker
Good catch! I recall that Graggle also went through color switches in the early seasons, and there was much chatter about it on the alt.simpsons boards. But like everything else with Graggle, they've deleted/censored all such posts.
But HOLY CRAP! Look at how dark dark Mayor Quimby's face is there! That one time - could it be an animation error? NO! - knowing Joe Quimby, I bet that's just the one Joe himself, having arrived from a VERY offensive party! He's still too sloshed to realize his face is blackened, and his political "handlers" aren't there to keep him out of sight. How's he going to get out of this self-inflicted mess? 1:25 - Groundskeeper Willie's twin is spelled Groundskeeper *Willy* but none of the others have unique spellings for their twin? Boy I hope someone got fired for that blunder

Good comp of color switching/biracial twins/secret families around Springfield! Remember also that Bleeding Gums Murphy is also likely to be Dr. Hibbert's long-lost brother. Zombie Hibbert might actually be an unholy experiment gone wrong. "Freddy", one of those early characters with the little beady eyes (maybe because they're *Canadian*? 😉) - but along with "Lewis", unless they were actually referred to by those names, they're probably just other kids shown one or two times. With rampant infidelity around Springfield, it's also possible that common DNA traits are scattered over so many people around town.

You showed one, but didn't comment on it. Krusty's yellow twin was the one arrested for robbing the Quick-E-Mart when Sideshow Bob framed him. But the real Krusty's face is permanently white due to a cardiac problem that reduced the circulation to his face. This is revealed when Krusty visits Homer before his heart surgery, and then again when Krusty faked his death, and disguised himself as his yellow twin before he went swimming and the yellow makeup came off! One could argue that Krusty had makeup as well for the trail, but he was in jail, which doesn't allow makeup, so that can't possibly be the same Krusty!
The rabbit hole goes even deeper when you find out they originally wanted Homer to secretly be Krusty. So I would definitely say it started out as makeup

My favorite tidbit about Black Smithers: The Back Glass (the upright part that keeps score) of the original 1990 Data East Simpsons Pinball machine actually features the Black Smithers. I did see a comment as well referring to the arcade beat em up from Konami which is also rife with early simpsons design elements and flubs, but he is Yellow in that game.

It’s crazy how often these errors occurred in the early seasons, I get that with cels errors were probably more likely but did they not have consistent model sheets? There’s other colouring errors too-black-haired Milhouse, Moe and Wiggum and blonde Barney stayed in season one, but Kent Brockman had a blue jacket variant for several seasons Frink with a green coat, Skinner with a purple blazer Tanned Moleman in my opinion is the most jarring colour goof-how did anyone think that was the right design? Another really weird colour error that sticks out for me is at the beginning of Trash of the Titans-where a red Lindsey Naegle appears
I thought the white/yellow version of Gary the Nerd was a caricature of one of the Simpsons writers, since the Itchy and Scratchy Show writers are supposed to be based on the actual Simpsons writers as seen on "The Front" (season four episode where Bart and Lisa write I&S episodes and use Grampa Simpson's name as a cover) and "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show" from season eight. And I never knew there was a tan version of Groundskeeper Willie. And I thought black Smithers was written off as "It's yellow/white Smithers, but he went on vacation and came back with a tan". At least according to the actual Simpsons writers. It also would explain why both black Smithers and yellow/white Smithers have light purple/periwinkle hair (earlier episodes also had Smithers with light purple hair while later episodes have it as a dull beige or gray color). And the episode that had Sherri and Terri as yellow was non-canon (it was a dream that was part of a Treehouse of Horror episode. Doesn't get more non-canon than that).
It's obvious that all the residents of springfield sport a yellow coat of fur. Any characters who switch skin tones just happen to have their fur shaved off. That's also why Bart and Lisa don't have a hairline, their hair just has the same color as their fur. Case dismissed

"I thought he was just being colorful" haha. I knew Moleman would be here as he was one of the first ones I thought about along with Smithers. Does Chief Wiggum count? In his first appearances his skin looks a bit darker yellow and he had black hair.
What about Judge Snyder? They had him as black and white a lot until they settled for black (and I'm pretty sure he's one of the many nonwhite characters that had to be recast because their VA was a white man [Harry Shearer] and we can't have that in our post-racial mess of a society).
I'll say that Willie's twin looks more tan than brown. That's a bit like the color shade they give mixed race Latinos in Springfield, so maybe that's Encargado de Mantenimiento Guillermo?
There is actually a black Chalmers that appears once somewhere in an episode (Somewhere between S10 and S20) I can’t remember the episode exactly, but the scene has Homer entering a class room.
Thats epic, i never realised how often this happened, as a kid i notcied a decent amount of color "mistakes" for example the notorious red bow on maggies head one time
Can we just appreciate that in a town where Black folks are seemingly only 1-2% of the population that the most successful doctor and the judge are both black 🙏🏾
And also Lou's most competent police officer! He is also the kindest, most humane, calm, polite, cultured, intelligent and educated character. Although he never explicitly stated it, other people in Springfield hinted that he was a graduate of Princeton University. After graduation, Lou applied and was accepted to law school at an unspecified university, but was forced to drop out because he could not afford college tuition.
Actually there was a scene in Season 2 Episode 8 where Lewis became yellow for a split second when him, Bart and Milhouse are throwing popcorn at the TV

Early Simpsons was way ahead of its time. It was openly accepting of not just racefluid adults, but kids as well. Depicting a society where racial transition was not just accepted but practiced regularly. Michael Jackson would be proud! Too bad the backlash made them tone it down in later seasons.
Black Smithers was originally the real design but people felt that it could be bad if mr Burns has a black man as his assistant as it seems like a slave
