Buschwhacking (verb) - Cup drivers racing in the lower series of NASCAR, specifically the Xfinity Series, which was formerly called the Busch Series
Buschwhacking is deeply rooted in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, much more so than you may think, and in today's video we're going to cover all of it from the very beginnings of the Busch Series through the 2011 season. In 2011, NASCAR finally put their foot down and banned Cup drivers from earning Xfinity Series points, but even that didn't stop the Buschwhackers from racing and winning the vast majority of Xfinity Series races.
Part 2 of 2: 2012-Today and "Truckwhacking" coming soon....

back in the 80s and 90s the cup drivers would usually just run the big tracks if Cup was there on the same weekend

The decade of the 2000's was definitely the era of the Buschwhacker drivers, 2008 in particular I think Busch, Hamlin & Tony Stewart combined for 20 of the season's 35 race wins in the JGR Busch Series #20 car. Truex was the best regular of that decade, only one who could consistently outrun the Cup drivers & won those two back to back Championships...

You might want to talk about the Buschwhacking issue having also bled into the Trucks series

Bushwhacking killed off all the opportunities for so many promising young drivers. Cale Gale, Erik Darnell, Bryan Clauson, Kelly Bires among others.

nascar could have fixed this in 02. but ignored it. and that more or less started the trend it became. 01 harvick was more or less forced into running the double after dales death becasue of sponsorship commitments. even he said had he realized how crazy it was going to end up he might have dropped out of the busch schedule. nascar, and at least two tracks worked together to help him out. milwaukee put lights in (or at least agreed to run that as a night race) and i think maybe but could be wrong , pikes peake that yearvwas scheduled as a sunday race, and since it was a noncompanion event, and if there was another series there it was another lower tier series they agreed to switch the races on the weekend and move the busch race to saturday and the toher one to sunday. now in 2002 no cup drivers were forced to or committed to running both full time. really didn't go that way till 06 when kyle did it for hendrick, then 06 on it got that way. but if nascar had just put the schedule back to the way it was in 01 with to many conflicts to make it work issue would have resolved itself. then all the sudden by 2012 or so they're down to like 5 non companion events, and like 2 are on cup off weekends anyways. what they should have done and i said this at the time cause i saw where it was going. make it simple. make a schedule where it's half and half. non companion and companion events kind of like truck series has been for years. let some smaller places get the glory of a bigger race every year (or even on rotating schedule) cup guys can still run some if they want, have the busch/xinity/nationwide series be what it was alwasy designed to be a feeder series but where cup guys could run a few times and have fun, or run at places they liked or home races. if you look back at the 80's and even into early 90's that's what the busch series had. that's why other than terry labonte for most of those years you didn't have anybody run more than about half the schedule as a cup driver. plus there were conflicts with them running same day different places even if one was a day race say in charlotte and the night race was up at irp or somewhere. i use irp as an example because that was actually on the original schedule and stayed for years. no cup driver is going to go start at one race just to go comepete in a series he's part time in anyways to run another event there. but nascar won't go back to that. i sitll say that's the easiest solution. and it'd help both series. make drivers in xfinity more well rounded for if or when they make it to cup, let the cup guys still run up to half the schedule maybe less. the other idea i had around same time that no surprise got ignored was running a for lack of better term roval series. a few years before that brilliant idea for xfinity came up, nascar did away with the dash series. (and i think before they bought into the alms (enudrnce races series). my idea was simple 25 or so races a year. half oval half road courses. you couldn't really do much more than that and keep it well balanced unless you ran a few rovals. like kansas, texas, california, and probably tohers. but didn't realize there were more road courses in america than i thought. probably could get up around 30 events especially if you threw in a roval or two. benefits of rovals were to fold. like daytona where the roval is set up in a way where you dont' have a massive st up adn tear down of walls unlike charlotte every time, you could run it as a roval saturday take cones out run the cup next day on the oval or vice versa. and maybe if it was an odd amount of races for some reason alternate your final every year. like when miami was the finale, it has a roval. run a roval one year the next the finale on the oval. or you could do kansas in spring and run topeka in fall or vie versa, or run atlanta and road atlanta as a finale or double main event finale weekend. stuff like that. oh well i also said the caution clock was going to be a disaster and stages were an even worse ideaso what do i know.

Busch Whacking didn't bother me as much until 2011 when they implemented the Pick A Series point system. Seeing the BIG FAT 0 in the point column is what bugged me more than anything

I kinda miss when Buschwhacking was like this, but do the current rules of Buschwhacking help the Xfinity Series? Absolutely

Honestly, if Sprague stayed another couple years in the Busch Series, he would've been a decent prospect. Heck, maybe even a contender for some wins and maybe a championship in either the Busch or Winston Cup Series.

edwards run in 05 isn't totally fair to say that it was a double. at beginning of year he was scheduled full time in busch and then see what happened with cup sponsor. it wasn't till atlanta where he swet the weekend roush wasn't sure he was going to run both full time. then sponsors started stepping up and carls' results got jack to say ok we'll do both full time if u wish, i'll put up the money if we need to for the cup races (and didn't run a single race with no sponsor)

Lol Kryle is a gigantic hypocritical POS. The only prime that he was in was the prime of being a whiny hypocritical POS. Even now he tries to act like the papa of the garage area because his ego is bigger than the acreage of Talladega. He's a joke and he's paying for it right now and pretty soon he's going to be out. Period.

Harvick was the first one if I remember. He only missed the Daytona 500 in 2001, and finished like 9th in points with wins at Chicago & Atlanta & then he also won the Busch Series Championship that year as well. Of course it's not like it was something he wanted to do, the death of Dale Sr put him in that position and he did as good a job as anyone could have.

Fun fact was Jason Leffler is not racing full time in Cup which he have won the Busch Series title in 2007 with a single win.

Bogus rules. They muzzled these drivers, they should be allowed to race all races in any series if they can. This is how you make better young drivers, you let them drive against the best!!! Busch would have 500 wins by now lol

0:39 17:11 correction: Brad wasn’t a rookie in cup in 2010 since he did enough races in 2009 11:54 Edwards wasn’t a rookie in cup in 05 as he did the last third for Roush in 2004 after Burton left for RCR mid-season 16:06 David Ragan (Busch Series rookie of the year in 2007 and also a rookie in Cup in 2007) got 5th in the championship with Jason Leffler (R.I.P.) (highest placed Busch regular) in 3rd and Kevin Harvick 3 points behind Leffler in 4th despite missing I think 6 races. Amazing video, as usual nonetheless. Keep up the great work! Can’t wait for part 2
