Bit late, but as far as I know, for the most part, the reason (or at least one of the reasons) the Island miniseries got so much flack is because WildBrain (and Bragi, Kevin and Chris) decided to character check Ronin to make him closer to his Shadow of Ronin self (I know Dan and Kevin stated they wanted him to be morally ambiguous compared to his SoR self, especially since that game took so many liberties it had to be deemed non-canon, but they left the show in Bragi's hands after Hunted, so...). Given how his mercenary takedowns of the Ninja in Skybound were undone after Jay's final wish, outside of turning the Sword of Sanctuary over to Morro, Ronin had a pretty clean record going forward. Considering his absence in the first 3 WildBrain seasons, one would think he would've been available at some point or another. But then comes a 4-episode miniseries to lead into Seabound, and Lloyd mentions how he doesn't feel comfortable having a bounty hunter like Ronin cleaning up crime for cash... at that point, I knew that was gonna come back by the end as him being behind the fake Wojira menacing Storm Island. That whole scam seems like something his SoR self would've done. Then in Crystalized, when Ronin gripes about how the Ninja threw him in Kryptarium, Lloyd proceeds to ask when he ever did anything that wasn't solely for himself... which blatantly ignores that despite his greed, Ronin let them use R.E.X to get to the FSM's tomb, helped fight the ghosts in Stiix, helped them during the Dark Island Trilogy, helped Jay save his mom (granted he was looking to jack some of their junk to bolster his M.E.C, but still...), helped fight the Vermillion, helped take down the Colossus, and even after his little stunt in the miniseries, _was allowed to attend Nya's funeral._ Even if Ronin was helping a bit for himself, he still fought more times _with_ the Ninja instead of _against._ The guy's selfish, but that one question rubbed a lot of people the wrong way when he'd been a consistent ally up until that point.
what really pissed me off that they reduced ronin to a scoby doo villan in season 14 it's like they made him forget how he was they made him and the ninjas forget all those times he helped theme they ruined his charchter and in the end they just leave him in cell in the island like WTF he was you're friend you really just gonna leave him like that forever and it's not like he hurt anybody he just stole treasure treasure that the protectors of the storm element that no use of the fact that the ninjago writers made ronin say [If it wasn't for you ninjas I was gonna get away with it] makes me so mad I will never forgive theme for this I know I might be overreacting but Ronin is such a good chrachter he's in shades of gray he isn't a hero neither a villain thta's what makes his charachter so good in my opinion even when he hunted down the ninja he said it was nothing personal because deep down he respects theme they even saved him is season 5 and to ruin all that just makes me hate the modern ninjago writers
@@Tyrelshed123Well, I only think it’s non canon because Kai isn’t telling the story accurately enough. But in S5 the ninja bring up how they know him and he’s not a friend. This even happens - Ronin: “If this is about our last encounter, it was only business.” Kai: “You left us in the mouth of a-“ which sounds accurate to the ending of the game. So… I think Shadow of Ronin DID happen off screen, Kai is just a bad storyteller
Ronin had some other confrontation with the ninja before possession too. Jay mentions how Ronin left them in the "mouth of a......." and gets cut off. We don't know what happened but it implies that Ronin has fought the ninja before using his airship, because Jay tries to recall the name of it.
