So… I had this detail in my notes but neither I nor my researchers found any mention of that happening in recorded myth. I originally found that claim on the Percy Jackson wiki and other websites that don’t quote directly from the sources. I didn’t want to include a modern twist and present it as historical, so I chose to leave it out. If someone can find the poem or text containing this claim I’d be very intrigued though.

I know Hestia from the Percy Jackson series and I absolutely adored her. Though she barely made an appearance, she is presented as a sweet and warm being which I think is accurate, like in the myth. She is so loved that the other Gods, especially the male Gods, didn't have the heart to hurt her and even protected her. In short, she is the cinnamon roll of Olympus XD

When I learned about Hestia's role in the Greek pantheon, I decided I liked her. When I learned that she had the least amount of drama in her stories, I decided that she was my favorite figure of the Greek pantheon as a whole. Her depiction in the Percy Jackson series was great in my opinion and that's when I learned about how much POWER she had in regards to the sacrifices in particular. She's a rare breed of goddess and that in and of itself deserves mad respect.

I actually have an idea for Hestia Story. There was a little girl who was being horribly abused by her family, she has to do everything in the house at a young age, one day while cooking dinner, she cries near the fire and Hestia heard her cry, she comes to see what's going on only to witness the girl's stepmother walks in and start beating the girl for taking so long. Hestia was furious at the this and burn the stepmother's face with fire, she decided to punish those abusers by making them burn for eternity. Hestia adopted the girl and grant her godhood, she named the girl Aminta (Meaning “protector” or “vindicator,"), Aminta become the goddess of children and teaching, forever protecting children from being abused.

My understanding of “virgin” from Ancient Greek is that it means self-contained and self-reliant. Independent. Not requiring a man to take care of you and your life. I always think about that initial meaning when it comes up in other ancient stories.

@deltatango6793
@deltatango6793 5 месяцев назад
@@c.w.1925 today, sure. That’s not the intended Greek mythological interpretation of the word. The word "virgin" comes from the Greek and Latin word virgo, which means "maiden". In Greek mythology, virgo was used to describe several goddesses, such as Diana and Artemis where the word "virgin" can also mean unmarried, "one-in-herself," or "not belonging to a man". As an aside, the Bible did not originally say Mary was a virgin. The word translated from the Greek and Hebrew for virgin actually has several possible translations like young maiden, girl, hand maiden and virgin as a possibility is lower in the list than many other possibilities. However even though this word was never in dispute over its translation King James ruled the word to mean virgin and it stuck and dogma was created in its support.

Thank you John, for talking about lovely Hestia. I am Greek, and I love delving into the myths and folklore of my ancestors, and Hestia is the goddess that I have been the most drawn too since I first learned about her, she’s very gentle, and warm, I’d describe her energy as like a warm hug from someone you love, and as someone with severe anxiety and depression, Hestia’s gentle energy is one I am drawn too. I love that she’s an introverted goddess, and she’s introspective. I also love the fact that she generally keeps to herself and doesn’t get involved in all the other gods drama. Hestia deserves so much love and respect, she has such a gentle energy, such a good heart, it saddens me that not many people know about Hestia. Also, thank you for making sure that your sources are Greek and not Roman, often people confuse the Greek gods with their Roman counterparts. Thank you for clearing up the part about the vestal virgins, a lot of people associate them with Hestia, but that was purely a Roman thing, Hestia was worshipped by all people, she didn’t have a sacred temple of her own, priestesses or priests. The Hearth flame is Hestia’s sacred temple, think of Hestia as the literal embodiment of the Hearth flame

After this I did a little (very little) research which confimed that no myth of antiquity states Hestia gave up her seat for Dionysus and that its a more modern idea. But it is probably based on the fact that some lists or depictions of the 12 include Dionysus and some have Hestia. For example the East frieze on the Parthenon has Dionysus and no Hestia, while the alter of the Twelve Olympians in Athens includes Hestia but not Dionysus.

Hestia (autocorrect is actually trying to make me type Bestia...wtf) has been severely undervalued within the Pantheon. She has always been my favorite.

This episode reminded me of the fact that an alternate version of Hestia is featured as one of the deities we see most frequently in Danmachi; that version seems to almost be in perpetual debt and plagued by a few other issues. Regarding deities, and mythologies in general, that deserve more attention, I would like to point to Irish mythology. The Tuatha Dé Danann, which literally translates to the "Tribe of Danu," are the pre-Christian gods of Ireland, but most surviving accounts of their lore are so mangled and messed with by the Catholic monks, who ironically were the first to officially transcribe the stories in written form, that there are a lot of missing pieces or have been altered so heavily by the Christian monks that it's nearly impossible to tell what was added or changed. Given the group's full name, it's safe to say Danu was a big deal. But the native name for Ireland, even to this day, is Eire (pronounced Air-Uh, or Eh-Rah); this is actually a reference to the goddess Ériu, but thanks to the medalling of the Catholic monks, there's not nearly enough surviving lore about her to explain why it's her name that's slapped on the Emerald Isle as the official name used by her native residents. And one of the nearly forgotten gods from Irish lore is Crom Cruach, a literal giant with only a single eye, and the medieval depictions of him are more pathetically sad than terrifyingly intimidating, which is a shame because of just how menacing and dangerous serving stories about him are. But he mostly gets a backseat in Irish lore these days, thanks in part to the tales of Cu Chulain, who does have a few stories about having encountered different members of the Tuatha, even been sent to learn from them in their sacred cities during what was likely his teen years and earning the right to wield the mighty spear Gaebolg. Technically the sword Excalibur does feature in Celtic lore, even some among the Irish Celts, but this is by its ancient Gaelic/Celtic name of Calagbolg, and English speakers are really good at having some disconnect and improper association. For example, popular media would have you believe that Excalibur is the sword King Arthur of Britannia pulled from the stone, but that's an entirely different sword named Calaburn, also known as the "Sword of Selection" which has the schtick of only coming out from from wherever it's embedded by one who has the potential to be a true ruler, Ecalibur was watched over and tended to by the Lady of the Lake, and there are even a few lines in some Arthurian tales about Arthur having to return the sword to her before he dies. Not to mention, popular depictions of both blades are technically wrong, to an insane degree. Looking at the time Arthur, and the swords, are said to have been around proves this by virtue of all the swords seen in popular media being well-known blades from eras well after the stories are said to have happened.

I've fallen a bit behind with your uploads, but when I saw you did Hestia I was so convinced that at some point you were going to say: "home is where the hearth is." I was wrong. 😆 But it's nice to see her get some modern day spotlight regardless. I read The Egypt Game when I was really young or and it introduced me to pantheons, but Greek mythos was the first one I really dove deep into so I always love to see you curbed back into the lesser know Greek deities. However, so pumped to know more Egyptian lore is upcoming. It has such a different flavor.

I've been looking around on the atu index and I think it would be interesting to do an episode on "the wolf/bear and the fox". It's not that popular a story but it was interesting seeing how many different variations there were. The versions seem to fall under ATU 1, 2, 41, 43, and probably more.

Here is a God for you. How about the God of keys or doorways, the god in the Percy Jackson books while they're lost in the maze and Hera tells that God to help them out, or something like that, it's been a while since I read that book.
