"She's done more to be considered a villain than Hades has" That's actually an insanely low bar to clear. Hades never messed with people just for the hell of it, he was content to rule his domain.

This is just a slight addition to how Artemis was regarded in Spartan society. While you highlighted that she was regarded as Spartan goddess of warfare, she held equal importance as the goddess of childbirth. In Spartan society, a woman who died in childbirth (creating a new Spartan) was given the same honours and respect and funeral rites as a Spartan man who died in battle. I don't want to detract from your excellent summary here - I just thought it was an interesting point to make.

The only quality that makes her stand out from most of the gods is the fact that she wanted to remain pure and be independent from men. Unlike her other siblings like Aphrodite who started a war and her step-mother Hera who tried to make every women who Zeus slept with miserable with these horrible punishments and killing off the innocent children. Yes, Artemis is very protective over her purity to the point she would kill a man who sees her exposed, but she can be merciful. Like that myth about a little boy who saw Artemis bathe in a lake by mistake, she couldn't kill a child so she gave him the option to die as a boy or become an immortal girl who will join Artemis in her hunts.

I read Percy Jackson, honesty I like when I was young but now I don't(well,I still like Clarisse La Rue,Reyna,Sadie Kane and her brother,Zia Rashid,Nico and maybe Frank but just they),Rick is a misogynist,he doesn't respect Pagan Religion, and he says in his books(that are designed to childrens) that a rapist is an excellent father figure and a kind man,but in the same time he says that Ares(who is one of the first Feminist Gods) that he is dump,he like to kill children that want to save Olympus,he is a weak fighter who lost a fight to a 12 years old,and that he is the misogynist and that basically he hate his daughters,in the Sea of Monsters Rick write that he threaten Clarisse,in the Stolen Chariot it's says that only his sons gets his motorcycle for a day and Clarisse is the first daughter in centuries, and in the Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods Rick change completely story of Harmonia,in real world she was given by force to her husband(who kill her brother)by Zeus and after she is transformed intro a snake by Hephaestus,in Rick's book after death of her brother and her wedding,Ares transformed her and her husband intro snakes, and all in Greek Gods(a story in which Percy is the narrator and the commentator) appears Alcippe(daughter of Ares)who is almost rape by a son of Poseidon, and still Ares is the bad guy that killed very painfully that son of the bitch- sorry son of Poseidon, and all that narrattor says is that he wanted to see Poseidon fight Ares because of that him kills his son,and that it is just the obviously things, but are many others things, like in the Lightning Thief when Medusa is accused for Poseidon that rape her,and many other things

What’s really amazing about this series is that one can see the commonalities across cultures’ deities. For instance, in the Yoruba pantheon, there’s a deity named Ochosi; he basically represents the same concept as Artemis. Hunter, deer are sacred to him, synonymous with magic, killed his mother by acting too hastily, etc. These commonalities make me think of Joseph Campbell’s “Hero of a Thousand Faces” hypothesis - either something happened globally and we interpreted the phenomenon based on our culture/location or we’re all the same so we create the same stories. Thanks for the series m8!

Your interpretation of Artemis was so reminiscent of my mother...who is named after Diana. Both I believe are at least similar enough for comparison and I'd have to say my mother took her namesake to heart. XD

It's weird that the story of Callisto, reminds me of the beginning of Medusa's story. It seems more like her keeping the secret rather then explaining from the beginning is what led to that punishment. I still hold strong that she's one of the least savage of the pantheon as she has only punished the insolent. No tricks, just righting the wrongs of hubris.

Depending on the version, she also kills Ariadne, the half sister to the Minotaur. Apparently it was because she fell for Theseus, who (again depending on the version) was betrothed to Dionysus, the god requested Artemis to kill her.

Hades is not an Olympian in the slightest, so this is only natural. You could just as well say that the Olympians are more villainous (read: morally grey) than Hekate or Thanatos... yeah, they are, but they also appear in countless stories and have well-developed personalities unlike the underworld deities. Also, love how y'all like to pretend Hestia doesn't exist.

Your channel recently showed up on my RU-vid as a recommendation. I must say I find your episodes regarding Greeks gods and goddesses very insightful. I currently got approved to have a book I have written to be published in the UK. It's not typical facts instead it's a fantasy novel but I base the origins heavily on Greek mythology. Although my first book is already in publishing I'm pleased to note that alot of my pervious content stems very closely to origins you have explained already so thank the heavens for that... Just wanted to say I'm finding your videos very insightful and I'm finding ways to incorporate these mythological facts into my next two installments of my trilogy so thank you. I will be following you from this day forward

Something interesting you could had added is before the battle of marathon the Greeks already having Athena favor but being outnumbered by several thousand chose to make a promise to Atermis they would sacrifice one goat for every Persian slayed. After the battle they killed so many, they chose to do 2 annually for a few decades.

I remember reading in the 12 tasks that Artemis told hercules that he could capture the deer, on the condition he must not shed a single drop of blood. So hercules breaks the arrow tip off and shoots the deer at the ankles while it was running away. The arrow penetrates 2 legs at the same time stopping the deer in its tracks, and didn't make the deer bleed due to no tip.

I thought the same thing. There’s been a few in the comments who have been very triggered by her for some reason. Which I don’t get, despite her harsh measures she wasn’t a man hater at all. There was her best friend Orion, her brother Apollo, and all the dudes she hunted with and helped out. I don’t get the hate. 🤷‍♀️

Oh? Have you really counted them? In the oldest surviving version of this story, the one who changed Kallisto into a bear was definitely Artemis. As for the much later accounts, there are other two in which Artemis did it, two in which Zeus was the one who changed the girl and two or three in which Hera was responsible for the transformation. So, there is an equal number of versions where Artemis and Hera changed Kallisto into a bear, with the added bonus that the account of Artemis is older by more than half a millennium and the account of Hera doing it appears mostly in Roman sources. Besides, even in the versions in which Kallisto is metamorphosed by either Hera or Zeus, Artemis is still almost always the one who kills her.
