gotta also give mad props to Filoni for giving us such an experience with an under developed character that George had so much potential for Imagine if Maul was the main villain during the prequels in my opinion it would have been better than Dooku but that's just me
It IS emotional! He has finally reached what he desired the most - catharsis. And it's such an irony he reached it in the hand of his most bitter enemy.
What's your favorite Darth Maul moment? Mine is when he kills Duchess Satine. Kind of dark, but I love how it shows how far he will go to exact his revenge.
Cutting a person in half doesn't kill them instantly, they have to bleed out. And lightsabers cauterize wounds. Maul was never in danger of death after being sliced in half. If anything, Maul should've died from the fall, but as explained, he was able to grab onto something.
It would certainly kill him, as the slice cut though his intestines and cut off the end of his digestive tract and urinary tract. The like also severed his spinal cord. No one has ever been cut in half at the waist and survived. If Maul did not die of blood loss, the build up of toxins in his body due to not being able to excrete wast would absolutely kill him. It's unrealistic to believe that Maul survived the slice, survived the fall, snuck onto a ship, and then build himself complicated robot legs. His survival was a hasty and unrealistic retcon that was no way intended when Episode 1 came out. Listen, I love the Maul's episodes in the Clone Wars and in Rebels, but the actual fact of him surviving on the flimsy and vague excuse of "using the force" is a disservice to the captivating story and realism that Star Wars possesses.
Dancing Deity Well he was an alien so how would you know he would die like a human. He is human like but where would you know where his organs are? So there is an explanation to this.
I just noticed that Maul was most likely the first person Obi-Wan defeated (at ieast dark side force user) and the last one he killed before his own death.
I still think it's a bit cheap to have him survive TPM but the clone wars and the other material have made him such an interesting character that it's forgivable.
No I really do, his powers were sunned by Plaguies and Sidious the latter of which took him from Dathomir from his nightsister mother who wasn't Mother Talzin. Maul was then tested by the two Sith and some weeks prior to episode one many times one of which was to destroy Black Sun, and then he was killed on Naboo. Then in a comic was that wasn't Canon at the time, Maul went to Tattoween to kill Obi-Wan but was shot in the head by Owen Lars so yeah I know his story in Legends.
You also know that the clone wars is part of legends continuity (like fake history but still) And when you say tested, you may mean the lockdown, shadow hunter and other novels and comics that go deeper than the cheap version of canon. By the way, Maul's story was going to be longer due to the Maul game that got cancelled but was going to be dated during the legacy era. So, yeah, you seem to barely know what they tell you in the videos, but that's it.
Khepera Bowlin-Jones That's because you haven't read the novel and comics based on him. It's pretty much stupid to say that Maul doesn't have an story before Ep 1, but I suppose you work out of ignorance.
I have never really understood the appeal Maul had for so many people in TPM. His subsequent return and the recent comic have done far more for his character.
When we get more information about Rae Sloane about her involvement with the First Order and eventuall death I think you should do a video similar to this about her. Keep up the great work!
Darth Maul is one of the most tragic characters, and that's why I love him. I always loved him becuase he has a great character design (I mean, that's how we all start to like Characters in Star Wars, right? The cooler ones always get more praise.) and then with the Clone Wars and Rebels, he was so fleshed out. He was smart, he was powerful, he was pure evil at certain moments, and he also got my sympathy when he died. He'll always be my favorite Star Wars characters.
I like the idea that Maul is far from the most powerful and skilled and variety force wielder and not the best blade duelist but he makes up for it for his unarmed combatic skill settings as well as his toughness and roughness and warrior mentality but he is a honorable one when he meets a opponent that he feel was a worthy fighter
Baggles I totally agree KENOBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!he will pay for what did to one of my favorite star wars chartecter .
I know you've probably already done this, but I would love to see an updated version of Darth Revan's story made like this video, as it would not only give one of only a few in depth analysis of his character, but would be an amazing reference point for one of the greatest as of yet non-canon characters of all time. Help me StarWarsExplained, you're my only hope!
"Far above, far above, we don't know when we'll fall." "Far above, far above, what once was great is rendered small"...... A not as infamous yet much more poetic quote than say "I am your father". It was first muttered by Sidious, in the presence of Maul, during a legend's book by Ryder Windham. It was labeled: The Wrath of Maul. It of course foreshadow's Maul's eventual fate making it truly poetic in it's ironic sense. However the genius of it's idea is not as well known as it should, and even the truest of fans faintly recognize it. F.Y.I: The quote itself is in a sense canon as it appears in an episode of The Clone Wars, believe it or not, when the still broken Maul first returns to Dathomir as well muttering the phrase to himself in his state of madness. It is one of the few things he remembers from his past life. The Star Wars community should endulge much further into the topic.
I didn't watch the series, but I did where Maul said something along the lines of "He is here isn't he...He will avenge us". What did Maul mean? If he was talking about Luke, he couldn't have been thinking Luke would avenge the sith. Could Maul have felt some emotional connection between him and Kenobi in his last moments because of the Clone Wars and the fight between the Light and Dark side that ruined both their lives. It would make sense for Maul to think so because the fall of the Jedi, the Clone Wars, and Maul's personal years of suffering and isolation were all a result of Palpatine's planning. Luke went on to bring his father back from the dark side and defeat Palpatine, so in a way, he would avenged both Maul and Obi Wan for the pain they endured so long ago.
greedoFAIL it’s because maul truly hates the south more than the Jedi and knows obi wan is protecting the chosen one/ Luke that’s why he ask if he will avenge them
Without doubt darth maul will always be a amazing part to the Star Wars story line. He was a great warrior killed many people and survived for a great amount of time in the Star Wars franchise. I loved his appearance in Star Wars and I enjoyed the great rivalry with obi wan Kenobi. As a final there will be no one else that can replace him as my favorite just because he is such a badass.
Vader and Maul are my favorite Siths. I grew up watching the OT So I loved Vader and I was 14 in 99 when Ep.1 released so when Maul was introduced with a double blade saber I was amazed as can be!
Timeline of Maul in the Canon (so far): Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir (Flashback) Darth Maul (Comic) Star Wars: Age of Republic - Darth Maul Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Seasons 3-5) Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Season 7) Solo: A Star Wars Story Star Wars: Rebels (Seasons 2-3) There are gaps in the story basically around Solo: A Star Wars Story and in between TPM and TCW. Our marvellous Dathomirian Nightbrother (not a Zabrak) life summaried (not): Born on Dathomir. Stolen by Darth Sidious because he tricked his mother. Trained as a Sith under the person who kidnapped him (gosh). He then revealed himself to the Jedi. A Jedi chopped him in half. He ended up on a trash planet. He goes crazy. His brother finds him. Takes him back to their mother. His mother puts him back together. He and his brother go on a quest to kill Obi-Wan and to form a faction for the Clone Wars. He tried and failed to form a faction with the pirates but succeeded with the Manalorians and form the Shadow Collective. Obi-Wan goes to save his love Satine but Maul kills her. Obi escapes. His old master arrived and killed his brother. Captures him and his get broken out by the Mandalorians. Talzin sends the Nightbrothers to help Maul and the Shadow Collective to fight the Separatists. They get murdered by Dooku. Lots of Maul's followers leave the Shadow Collective. But he still has the Manalorians. Ahsoka Tano arrives and saves Mandalore from Maul. Maul and the Shadow Collective (now known as the Crimson Dawn) go to become pirates to send Qi'Ra on a adventure in the Solo film. The some how looses the organisation and goes looking for a Sith temple and a Sith holocron on Malacore. He film them and Ezra with friends. He tried to make Ezra him apprentice but failed. He and Ezra merged a Sith and Jedi holocons to get visions of Obi-Wan. He with Ezra goes to Dathomir to use Nightsister magic to figure out where Obi-Wan is. He goes to Tatooine and finds Obi-Wan and dies at his hand. Obi-Wan berries him on Tatooine. We basically know his whole life story. Yes some gaps but what do you people want? More of him? That creates Solo where it just adds stuff that doesn't work.
One of those clone channels has a nice video about this. Its name is a references to one of the other versions of this story or something, and it's basically a video eulogy for Maul. It's an incredibly well-done video, and made me feel a little less upset that an entire episode of Rebels was wasted on Maul's death.
Yes in fact Maul and savage are so much alike they both went through brutal training and punishments and become great warriors with their rage and maul is just so likeable
I know this one is asking for a lot, but he's a compelling and complex character and I love seeing his complete life chronicled into one video. Do Anakin Skywalker.
Starting up a movie review page and I linked this video in my description so people would have a detailed explanation of of what happened to Maul. Thanks for all you do and may the force be with you ;) also good luck against San Witwer!
Ah but is his story complete? We were happy that his story ended when he got cut in half but they still brought him back. Why not have him survive being slashed across the chest as well? Are we sure he wasn't in the background of Maz's castle in the Force Awakens? Only joking, this was a great video that provides a detailed, coherent biography of his life. I would definitely like to see more videos like these :)
I think it would be a cool idea to go thru all the prequel era Jedi council members and give them a similiar run down. Homeworld, master, apprentices, important missions etc.
Whoops, now there is a sizeable new chunk to be explored about Maul creating Crimson Dawn and probably loosing it to Qi‘Ra. :D That still doesn’t change the fact, that your videos are great!
Could you please cover all the Clone Wars ships the Rebellion and other organisations used in canon and Legends. Only the ships that have names or made a big impact in it's story.
He was not completely vanquished after his final battle with Kenobi. A scientist named Drell Kahmf extracted and kept Maul's brain alive in a bacta tank until Luke discovered it and shut it down.
Maul reminds me a lot of Darth Sion, from KOTOR II, and his Rebels character kind of had shades of Kreia to me. "Know that there was once a Darth Traya. And that she cast aside that role, was exiled, and found a new purpose. But there must always be a Darth Traya, one that holds the knowledge of betrayal. Who has been betrayed in their heart, and will betray in turn." -Kreia It makes me think of how Maul does not conceive of himself as a Sith in his final years. But he will betray still, as he blinded Kanan. It also helps that comparison in my mind that he spent time on Malachor. "I can die a hundred times, Exile, and each time I shall rise, as strong as before." -Darth Sion "As long as the dark side flows through the cracks of my flesh, I cannot be killed." -Darth Sion Maul survived Naboo and his years on Lotho Minor, but not Tatooine. Why? I think that he just did not have the will to continue hating Obi-Wan, as seen by his final words to Obi-Wan after he got slashed by Obi-Wan's lightsaber. The comparison between him and Sion is more relevant to the whole story of his character, but his character in Rebels made me reminded me of Kreia in KOTOR II as well. But he was raised in pain, lived through over a decade feeding his existence with that pain, and tried to bring the galaxy to his knees in retribution. And then he died when he realized it wasn't worth it. "It...it was not. No matter how many I killed...there was no end to the pain...the blades the Force tore through my flesh." -Darth Sion The similarities between him and Sion are clear in my mind, but what of everyone else?
Don't forget the implication that Maul was getting his food before Savage found him by literally luring travelers into his den, killing them, and eating them.
Maul has one of the best stories in all of Star Wars, easily taking a spot in my top four favorite characters in Star Wars, and this video isn’t even his full story, we still have his appearances in Clone Wars season 7 to look forward to in the near future, and whatever happens with Crimson Dawn leading him to end up on Malachor
His last words as he was dieing in obiwans arms was "is he the chosen one? He will avenge both of us" then obi wan put his hands over his eyes and let him die in peace
The "complete" story of the clones Echo, Fives, Heavy, Cut-up, (and 99) is kinda hard to track through the clone wars series. I wonder if you could slap together a video one those guys, if you wanted to. I tried watching their progression by skipping around but, it always seems like I'm missing something. Especially when they find Echo all plugged in during the "Bad Batch" episode. (Which is hilarious when Anakin sees the picture of Padmé on the side of their LAAT)
Another great character for this type of video would be Jyn Erso, since we pretty much see her entire life from birth to death, a rarity for most characters.
