This is a lecture delivered to medical students. It discusses how the anatomy of the tendons and muscles of the hand causes extension of the fingers to be mechanically far more complex than one might assume. The lecture concludes with discussion of how this complexity determines finger positions in various cases of upper limb nerve injury. Further electronic aids to learning human gross anatomy can be found at jackstern.org. Dr. Stern is Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus at Stony Brook University School of Medicine.
