René Clausen conducts Bob Chilcott's poignant arrangement of the U2 song. "MLK" has been written "as sort of a lullaby for an idea that was dying in our country: the idea of non-violence. Bob Chilcott is a former member of the "Kings Singers".

Kings singers is the best one, because it's done with all guys, the way it should be, the only way I've ever done it with choirs

Beautiful! I love the Thundercloud moment at 2:47 when the bass really thunders in.

Based on what's written in the music, it's supposed to be the "if the" that's the unison powerful part

It's been a couple years since I heard this on RU-vid, and something brought me back "home" to this arrangement. It took me a while to find someone who was in this specific choir, and they alerted me to one of the bass singers that BEASTED the last note. I'm thinking his name was Spencer, and he's 6th from the left on the top row...the soloist. I'm still amazed at this arrangement...lots of "rubs" and resolutions that are awesome. Thank you Rene Clausen and Bob Chilcott for your contributions to this masterpiece. Two words: SIMPLISTICALLY AWESOME! Edit: while battling a bug of some kind on 2/6, I decided to go for the end notes in the B1 line, seeing as how my voice was extremely low for me being ill. My hat is in my hands and whomever is hitting those notes - BRAVO. I was able to keep up through the first... so let it rain... but failed epically with the ensuing notes.

I’m currently singing this in my choir and let me say that this is unbelievably beautiful, tearing up and then the huge THUNDER CLOUD near the end really jerks you into reality and it’s just and amazing experience just listening to it

I sang this song in high school, almost 10 years ago. I cried when I sang it then, and cry now when I hear it. This is absolutely stunning! The beauty of this song and this choir sends shivers through me. Thank you.

I sang this arrangement with our choir at a fellow student's funeral when I was in high school. I cried pretty hard afterwards. I had just gotten to know the person and started to get close to them. They were a great human and they deserved something as beautiful as this, I can only hope we did it a modicum of justice.

I love this performance so much. I'm conducting this for a concert on Friday, and I was looking for versions to hone what kind of sound I want from my choir, but I couldn't find the right fit until I came across this one. I don't think I'll draw out the notes as long as this choir did; I wanna keep them short and sweet (but not TOO short). Regardless, this piece took me away for a moment. Absolutely lovely.

I truly believe the basses that you are hearing are the 6th and 10th persons on the very back row (starting from the left). I've seen other videos and I do think these are two of the lowest voices in the bass section - and I think the 6th person is the section leader. This arrangement is amazingly rich and gorgeous. What an incredible conductor and musicians in this choral group!!!!
@isaaclovdahl
@isaaclovdahl 8 лет назад
+Greg Sims You're right about these two! They were probably the two lowest basses we had that year. However, I was the bass section leader in this choir--I'm the big one in the third row, 7 from the far left. Glad you enjoyed our sound!

+Greg Sims - I've sang A Capella, SATB, and SAT...the one thing I've found is that two voices are hard to make into one voice, but if you have at least 3, you get a unit sound. By no means am I doubting that #6 and #10 aren't singing, but it would be much easier if there were three, or one. Still an amazing vocal production. BRAVA!

They do from a low C, up to D, then to the G (2 years late but our choir is singing this piece in our next performance)

In this recording, and I'm only assuming - something that should never be done - that there is ONE singer. Is that right? If so, this "animal/beast", and I say that in the most profoundly awesome way, is just "next door" to Eric Alatore of Chanticleer basement of F#1. EDIT: I researched/read a little farther down and found the name of Spencer Livdahl as the Bass 2 Soloist, but I'm not sure if that's the one who is maintaining the G1 at the end of the song.

GREAT solo! Soft and enchanting :) Just watched another video with a very IN YOUR FACE solo that was unpleasant. Very soft transitions, good legato, little bit much on the Sss, but overall one of the best I've heard :) Did this in Mass Choir in High School and it was a very moving song.
