Oral health is connected to heart health...and that impacts the whole body.
Three ways that oral health can affect systemic health:
1. Oral microbes, or toxins, can get into the blood stream, gaining access to organs.
2. Inflammation can lead to overall inflammatory response.
3. Mouth is the gateway to the body in particularly the GI track.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular disease is the world’s number one cause of death, killing over 17 million people every year.
There is now evidence of two specific links between oral health and heart disease. First, recent studies show that if you have gum disease in a moderate or advanced stage, you're at higher risk for heart disease than someone with healthy gums. And second, your oral health can provide doctors with warning signs for a range of diseases and conditions, including those in the heart.
Oral health and heart disease are connected by the spread of bacteria - and other germs - from your mouth to other parts of your body through the bloodstream. When these bacteria reach the heart, they can attach themselves to any damaged area and cause inflammation. According to Mayo Clinic, this can result in illnesses such as endocarditis, an infection of the inner lining of the heart. According to the American Heart Association, other cardiovascular conditions such as atherosclerosis (clogged arteries) and stroke have also been linked to inflammation caused by oral bacteria.

I'm just thinking... If the problem is microbes are causing plaque in the blood stream, wouldn't antibiotics help to treat the issue then? Are there any studies that suggest that taking antibiotics helps prevent plaque in your arteries? And isn't the body naturally fighting off microbes anyways? Why wouldn't the body target the microbes in the blood stream if it recognizes them as foreign invaders?

While it seems intuitive that antibiotics could help with plaque buildup caused by microbes, the situation is a bit more complex. First, not all plaque buildup in arteries is solely due to microbial activity; there are various factors involved, including diet, genetics, and inflammation. Additionally, antibiotics may not effectively target microbes within plaque deposits, as these deposits can be hard to reach and may have developed resistance. Moreover, indiscriminate use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance and disrupt the body's natural microbiome, which plays a crucial role in overall health. While the body does have mechanisms to fight off pathogens, these mechanisms may not always effectively target microbes within the bloodstream or arterial walls, especially in the context of chronic conditions like atherosclerosis. Research into this area is ongoing, but as of now, antibiotics are not a standard treatment for preventing plaque buildup in arteries.

Well, maybe if dental insurance actually COVERED more than x-rays, cleaning, and fillings, more people would be able to take care of their teeth. The average person can't afford crowns, bridges, implants, or dentures... so do the math! These are explained as being "cosmetic"! How is eating properly considered vanity? 🫢 To have major work done is about half the price of a car! 😠

that's true, even with "good" dental insurance from a school district, it doesn't cover crowns, and we've been paying on three of them for 5 years now, still owe about a year and a half

You can always check into your closest dental school! Many dental schools rely on outside patients and do treatment for less than half of the normal cost. Longer appointments and move visits, however, the work is still being completed if you're invested!

It’s the opposite. Cardio diseases cause gum disease to worsen. Almost everyone who has oral health problems is either experiencing mental illness or hormonal problems. They are looking at it the wrong way.
