Connor Bedard is the most hyped NHL prospect since Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby. Aside from his deadly release from range, we break down what makes Bedard SO good in 1 on 1 situations with the goalie, and how he uses different moves based on his angle of attack.

His release is often "off beat" to his skating and stick handling making the shot seem to come out of nowhere. Just so fluid. Joy to watch.

I've heard of elite skaters like MacKinnon and Kaprizov being able to "detach" their upper and lower bodies while skating, which is pretty crazy stuff. Somehow Bedard is able to detach his arms from his torso, and his torso from his legs. Kid is next level

Man, it’s the off beat shots that are the toughest to stop. When they can just snap their wrists from any position, it makes it damn near impossible to anticipate as a goalie.

100% The mid-stride release is actually pretty easy to practice... but executing it full speed in a game setting where all you want to do is take that extra half-second to get set. That's the difference maker

While they aren’t comparable in size, Connor sees the game like 66. I’m more impressed with his vision. He doesn’t do it through extraordinary skill like 97, shaping the play like 99, but by being so dominant around the perimeter, he creates opportunities.
@domcagney2352

I came here looking to see if Bedard ever uses the backhand, bc I haven’t seen him try it and it’s seemed to limit his opportunities in the show. From what I can see, he really doesn’t go backhand very often at all. As a Hawks fan, I’d love to see him incorporate that into his game…maybe it comes from watching Kane for so many years, but a filthy backhand is such a weapon… 2 games into his NHL career, I’ve been more impressed with every aspect of his game OTHER than scoring. I wasn’t aware of how well he played all 3 zones, how great of a passer he is and how well he sees the ice. For an 18 year old kid with the hockey world watching his every move, he’s been very impressive. I just wish the Hawks set him up better with more offensive skill players on his level. As it stands, he’s all opposing defenses have to worry about and they show him the respect of an accomplished veteran. I wish Kane was still around bc those 2 would be electric and I think we’d see Connor’s full potential

Love the classic goal scorer's move of forehand to backhand which opens up the goalie's legs and you slip it easily in the gaping 5-hole. Guys like McDavid gets 20 extra goals a year with this move. It is unstoppable.
@darksaga80
@darksaga80 Год назад
The wrinkle he puts in the move is not to simply slide it between the goalies legs on his backhand, he's actually able to get to his forehand and still put it five hole. I wonder if he adds the extra move so he has more power behind it in case it gets stuffed and he can lean into it more of a jam move? Either way, it works incredibly well for him.

Funny thing about him looking down before he shoots, is most NHL and pro players learn to NOT look down when they shoot as it's the most obvious tell for goalies you're going to shoot. Benefit of looking down is the goalie no longer can see where you're looking as you said in the video. These two reasons are why the best goal scorers will look away from where they are aiming to add a wrinkle in the attempts to see where they're aiming. i.e. looking top corner and shooting five-hole.

I'd like to see the old school poke check come back for goalies today. I've been a goalie for a very long time and grew up with a very different style then the goalies of today but watching this reel of goals it becomes obvious that a huge percentage of these goals all have a final movement within a couple feet of the front of the goalie. I know that the speed today is insane but with goalie pads designed to completely cover the ice and 5 hole a quickly executed poke check can be effective when the players are that close.
@ccreature7086
@ccreature7086 Год назад
i completely agree! I grew up playing goal in minor hockey then took a 30 year break from it. Started back at it about 4 years ago re-learning the "new style" and i have to admit the old double pad stack was hard to replace! LOL Butterfly stance is certainly more effective and, as you suggested, incorporating the poke-check has become an unexpected surprise to many of the younger players in my beer league! 😁😁

The current butterfly style is basically a “I’m committing totally once I’ve decided what the forward is going to do”. Once down, the goaltender becomes a statue lying down. I understand that statistically, the area of blockage is likely greater using this style but it still lends itself to total commitment once he/she are down. I’m also 60’yrs old and didn’t totally subscribe to this style when I played but I did use it significantly when I was in goal. Payers can read goalies pretty well now. Butterfly or stand-up, if you use either style consistently, they’re going to read you like a book and make their moves accordingly. Unfortunately for me, my eyes were bad enough that it prevented me from advancing to college play And (hopefully), to the show. Loved the game more than anything in the world. I really appreciate the talent that pros have. Lastly, I think Gretzky would do well in today’s play but his abilities would likely have made him formidable but not insanely great. The level of play has advanced beyond that of play years ago… and it will likely continue to advance but just not to the extreme it has in the last 20 yrs.

First, great video & analysis. Honestly one of your better analysis videos. Second, Conner Bedard is just ridiculous. The WHL is kind of a waste of his time. Good exercise for sure. Good to have others pounding on him & such. Third, As far as where he may end up. Of course I want him on my team but I definitely don't want him playing on any intentional tanker. Fourth, please Bettman fix the lottery like so many times before & make sure he goes somewhere good. Not Chicago who is trying to lose there way to him. Not out west unless it's Vancouver or Calgary. Vancouver because of there poor fans or Calgary because the Alberta wars of McDavid vs Bedard would be awesome. I would love him back east. Philly, Columbus, St. Louis (kind of east), Buffalo, Montreal (maybe), just a team that hasn't won a cup with good fans. fwiw, goalies don't look at a player's eyes. Or shoulders. Or arms. They look at the stick blade. The wisdom is: the puck can't do anything the blade of the stick doesn't tell it to do. Reading the blade is reading the play. Not the eyes. Pump fakes and "looking top left, shooting low right" mean nothing, the goalie doesn't notice; it's all about what the blade of the stick is telling the goalie about intentions and possibilities in a given moment. Snapshots are particularly difficult to deal with because of this, as the blade spends so little time squaring up and releasing that it is hard to read. Bedard's gift is making the blade do things so quickly the goalie can't track it; his wrist shot comes off the stick as quickly as a normal person's snapshot, but has all of the control and accuracy of a wristshot. He's scary.

@ehrenfickenscher8315
@ehrenfickenscher8315 Год назад
@@itsmeforsure5475 IWhat I found is the puck itself isn't important; it's how the stick is oriented, as again: the puck can only do what the stick tells it to do. For example, if the toe of the stick is pointed at you (as the goalie), he can't shoot. If the blade is square to you, he can't pass. You deduce intentions based on the player's options in those milliseconds. The thing with Bedard is he CAN shoot while the toe is pointing at you. His transition from not-a-shooting-threat to OMG-a-shooting-threat is like a quarter of anyone I've ever seen.
