I don't think its fair to say she is lying - you don't know that for a fact, going down a few hundred yards can be tempting not to wear, it happens to me too but I wear it anyway. People have different ways of justifying things.

Yeah, I always put on my seat belt with out even thinking about it. Seeing how you turn into a ragdoll when you get into a crash without it, is more than enough reason to keep it on.

I always wear my seatbelt when I am driving my car. If I attempted to drive my car with out putting the belt on, it feels like something is uncomfortably 'missing'.

@@dawinderdhillon4651, because the airbag isn't there to replace the seatbelt, it's there to work hand and hand. And plus that would be expensive. Imagine getting into a 10mph crash and your airbag goes off.... $5,000 right there.

The steering wheel is crafted in a way that it might break your jaw, but it won't break your neck - someone's already pointed out that they HAD smashed their face inot the wheel, and they broke it. I mean they broke the wheel. Yeah. And really the problem isn't that people don't want to wear seatbelts - it's that they are fined for not wearing it. IN a high speed car crash, if the seatbelt is not adjusted well (and in many cars the backseat seat belts are NOT adjustable), and the belt is too high up, it can slip off your collar bone, and tear off your head. Therefore the airbag will be deployed anyway whether you wear a seatbelt or not. Also, the seatbelt will reduce the possible injuries from the sudden deployment of the airbag.

Seatbelts have nothing to do with it, that would be pointless feature to implement. Seatbelts lock when a you're moved in any direction at a certain force, the airbag also releases at a certain force but it is much higher than the amount needed to lock the Seat belt.

To pinkey1933. The 33,000 you stated that died not wearing their seat belts is actually the total that died in vehicles other than motorcycles. I believe the percent that wear their seat belts is 80% and higher so with that in mind 80% of the 33,000 were seat belted and died anyway. I agree with you that it is crap to get tickets for seat belt violations. What I have found is cities with populations of 2,000 and less usually have never had a vehicular death in their city limits and in their 100+ year existence and yet they have cops writing them tickets in these towns that are incredibly safe. That I find to be pathetic. The deaths start occurring at the edge of town where the speeds go up from 30 m.p.h. to 55 and higher. Too bad the cops don't stick to writing tickets there. I thought we hired cops to protect us from others. Now the pigs are trying to protect us from ourselves. Sick!

bottmar1 I do not have anything against cops because 2 of them are childhood friends and 1 was in my unit. I asked one of my childhood friend cop what the answer for that is and compared to smoking deaths and why the seat belt one is illegal and he said simply because the seat belts can be regulated and money is to be made. Smoking is a multi billion dollar industry and will never be illegal so there is too much money to be made on that too. No one gives a shit about safety. Cops and local law do not care about people dying because there is a job for picking up bodies from side of roads. It is sad but no one cares. Maybe family and friends but not anyone else. I wear my seat belt to go to the grocery store a few blocks away. And my brother is a life support tech at a hospital in Texas and he said it's sad to see bikers who come in and are now dead/almost dead for not wearing helmets.

pinkey1933. I notice that all support techs say nothing about any of the people that die from head injuries in other vehicles. There seems to be a mind set that motorcycles/bicycles are the only thing to pay attention to. That gives the car drivers the attitude that they can dictate a helmet law to bikers when in fact there is a similar number of car drivers that die from head injuries. Of course cars are safer per mile than motorcycles but since cars are driven statistically 50 times as many miles they end up producing quite a few head injury deaths. People need to look at themselves in "the mirror" before telling others what to do which means if you drive a car without a helmet don't expect bikers to. As far as cops go, I used to have more respect for them when they applied laws in a manner that the laws were designed for. We have had a seat belt law in this state for over twenty years but the police rarely enforced it, certainly NOT in little towns that rarely have a death. They seemed to know writing seat belt tickets in a town where nobody was getting killed was rediculous. Now we have highway patrols come through town and write incredibly expensive tickets to "protect us".........from WHAT? I can't respect that so I politely try to remind them to protect us from others which what we hired them for in the first place. If I didn't have shoulder arthritis I wouldn't mind clicking seat belts as much and I am not willing to go through any pain at all just go to the local hardware store a few blocks away. I do click them when I leave town which is where deaths do occur around here. In town I put the belt over my left shoulder to look like it's on to avoid a purposeless ticket. Wearing a seatbelt is what could have saved my colleague's uncle. He was likely still alive when he went through the windshield, but he was not so lucky when he smashed into an oncoming car after having been ejected.

In rare cases seat belt can hurt your chances but usually it improves them. It's all about probability.

Good reason to not drink and drive and wear a seat belt.

I mean even the rare 70s model cars that had them still had a lap belt but they didn't have a shoulder belt. Shoulder belts were pretty new at the time most cars didn't have them until 1968.

What a stupid excuse.. I don't think that you will just simply "walk away" from the crash scene unhurt, during the crash you will bang your head against any objects in front of you if you didn't wear a seatbelt.. and the same concept can be applied on the rear passengers as well.

Crash test dummies have sensors for exactly this so they take it into account. You're right for cars from the 70's and older where the belt was pretty much just a rigid strap that breaks your collar bone (risk of lung puncture), a rib or two (heard puncture) and your neck nods with a lot of force with your brain bumping into bone. Modern cars have way more advanced seat belts. The pre-tensioner tightens the belt so you're nice and snug in the seat as the front of the car is deforming but the car isn't really decelerating yet. Then the force-limiter in the belt lets your upper body move forward as a whole instead of restraining it fully. The belt gradually loosens up so your organs don't get hurled into your ribcage and the airbag prevents the head from snapping your neck and also neatly keeps it from hitting the wheel or windscreen. Avoid having your thumbs on the airbag-flap or grabbing the steering wheel on the top with one hand. That airbag will make you punch yourself way harder than your old school bully ever could.
