For this video our subject is a painting by the American Master George Inness. This painting was executed during Inness' second sojourn to Italy in 1874 and is one of two paintings of similar subject matter.
This painting was owned by a university and museum before it became available to the public and ultimately the clients. At some point, perhaps in the mid 1940's the painting underwent a conservation whereby it was lined with an aluminum interleaf. After discussing options with the clients it was decided that this conservation would seek to undo all of that work and return the painting to Inness' vision as close as possible.
This video was shot over the period of about 4 weeks during which the work was executed as necessary. This video is not exhaustive, does not provide a comprehensive view of the work that was required to conserve the artwork or show some of the steps before, during or after the work. And as always, this video is not meant to be instructional.
--------
One of the most influential American artists of the nineteenth century, Inness was influenced, in turn, by the Old Masters, the Hudson River school, the Barbizon school, and, finally, the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, whose spiritualism found vivid expression in the work of Inness's maturity (1879-1894).
Although Inness’s style evolved through distinct stages over a prolific career that spanned more than forty years and 1,000 paintings, his works consistently earned acclaim for their powerful, coordinated efforts to elicit depth of mood, atmosphere, and emotion. Neither pure realist nor impressionist, Inness was a transitional figure who intended for his works to combine both the earthly and the ethereal in order to capture the complete essence of a locale. A master of light, color, and shadow, he became noted for creating highly ordered and complex scenes that often juxtaposed hazy or blurred elements with sharp and refined details to evoke an interweaving of both the physical and the spiritual nature of experience. In Inness’s words, he attempted through his art to demonstrate the "reality of the unseen” and to connect the "visible upon the invisible."
Within his own lifetime, art critics hailed Inness as one of America's greatest artists. Often called "the father of American landscape painting," Inness is best known for his mature works that not only exemplified the Tonalist movement but also displayed an original and uniquely American style.

@@lavenderhearts5751 I must be Chaotic Good. Love starting out with studio in perfect order. My closets, even down to my linens & shoes, lined up by type & colors. I'm amused by people who can't understand why I then make a huge mess throughout, only to pickup after myself while they're over, like I'm the errant child, while creating: because I completely let go! ...and I just happened to be watching another person restoring a painting, the guy starts ripping the back of the canvas off and I start yelling; You animal! What are you doing, you're going to destroy the painting! Baumgartner is having some influence on me. Now I question myself at work, ok, so nobody will probably notice, but will I be proud? What if someone else sees it. What will it say about me. 🤔 I'm going to have to stop watching his videos. I think it's turning me into a more ethical and thoughtful person.

Probably not. As amazing as conservators can be, they only really get "noticed" if they did an awful job and ruined something in a piece of artwork, and then it's by the new conservator cursing them. Baumgartner is doing a good job so it's unlikely the painting will ever need a new conservator--so there's no one to notice the work he put into it.

Little trick for handling gold leaf: take a square of wax paper and lay it over the leaf, then lift up. This will allow you to remove it from the packet one sheet at a time and transfer it freely. Since I'm a retired Chemist I'm interested in what "solvents" he uses and at what times. Of course it is never mentioned in the video but at about the 9:25 minute mark here I see that he adds what is possibly water, then a heavier immiscible solvent that separates at the bottom (Methylene Chloride maybe?) then another liquid that enables the two previously immiscible solvents to mix. (I'm guessing that is Isopropyl alcohol). This kind of customized mixing of different solvents I assume is what makes it possible to vary the concentrations of any of the solvents depending on the requirements of each individual task. Yes I'm a bit of a geek but it is fascinating to me.

@@raymondflores5176 Man you gud? I think Pink was just referring to the expression of the person, not the race. I think that if you look at a comment and immediately think someone's being racist, you need to reevaluate your mindset.

You casually say the retouching is simply color matching but to a person who is color blind you are a magician. I enjoy watching your restorations because they are technical but mostly the subdued passion you have for your work.

The gold gilding (not sure I spelled that right) does look fun to do. I use to restore furniture with my grandmother one of the most awesome things we ever found was a trunk I had since I was a baby that had been painted a terrible shade of yellow, once it was removed it have a beautiful set of hand painted flowers on the top. With some help from my aunt she was able to help me restore the painting on the lid. I still love that chest and have it with me!

According to Google it's only about $2.50 - $4/sheet for that exact same 22kt gold leaf. Way more affordable than you might think, so you can totally go nuts!

I'm an artist/painter and all I can think while watching these is how honored some of these long gone artists would feel to see you had painstakingly cleaned and revived their work many many decades, sometimes hundreds of years later. But also how shocked they'd be at your level of care and at the fact that anyone still remembers or sees their art at all by now, let alone their lesser works
