The quiet, gentle, mutually-respectful interaction between master and apprentice here is so delightful and so unlike what one is often presented with in similar situations. @@mircat28 hi Miranda, I made this comment specifically for the moment at 0:24, where Kit reached for the bottom of the painting to turn it to the proper orientation before Baumgartner even had a chance to tell her how to do it. I think he was partially teaching her and also explaining it to the viewer. As this was Kit’s first time being on the channel, I think she did a great job, especially with the thought of thousands of people watching her every movement lingering in her mind. She is learning and mistakes come with that!

I am not a conservation professional in any sense, but maybe you are? Also, a single moment does not make it into a pattern. Even with someone from my own profession I would not be able to make such an evaluation from an entire video. It is hard enough to do so with several interviews. It is a feel good comment that at best holds little value, and at worst can be damaging to her career, given that she reads it.

10:20 This fish gelatine mixture is also used to clear wine. While fermenting the juice throws off a lot of sediment. Stirring this into it bonds with the sediment, it becomes heavy and it all sinks to the bottom leaving clear wine on top to be carefully siphoned off.

I don't know her age (and don't need to know) but I can pretty much promise that Kit has immediately accumulated a few thousand new aunts, uncles, and other guardians. We're rooting for her, and it'll be exciting to see her get to Use the skills Julian is always telling us about. If Kit happens to read this, don't be intimidated! We don't bite, I swear! In fact, I’ve been meaning to ask Julian about whether he has this concern too, as the Dunning-Kruger effect is real, and his videos are so in-depth that I can totally see someone out there thinking they can watch his collected works and pass themselves off as an art conservation expert. Fml I teared up when I realized it might be Bob Ross, then out comes his smile. I spent so many days watching him wishing I could follow along. I always had an interest in painting and I just couldn’t. I would ask and beg my parents many times through the years and even the baby sitter that actually painted pretty often with oils was more concerned with me making a mess than expressing myself. What’s kind of ridiculous is I wasn’t a bad kid, at all. I was a bad teenager yeah but weren’t we all? In high school art classes I got to paint a total of twice, and the rest of it was spent learning about mediums I just wasn’t very interested in. It wasn’t until I was a full grown man that had already done 6 years in the military, 3 deployments and finally when I was finishing my credits for my degree and needed arts I finally started to paint. I had always had a passion for it but now creating it is just part of me, it’s always felt right. And sadly for reasons unknown to me I was denied it for most of my life. I suppose If I was truly truly passionate about I could have saved money and bought it myself but I was a kid I didn’t know where the hell I could paint if not at home. Oh well atleast I can do it now.

SO glad you're able to explore your creative interests at last!! 🥳 This kind of story of discouragement of people's creativity is sadly way too common, I fear....? I think a lot of family members have denigrated kids' interests in art or music because they don't consider it commercially viable as a career, or "manly" as a hobby, or feasible on a budget, or likely to attract a mate, or whatever! And some also dislike a whole range of artistic endeavors seeing them as pretentious, or only for rich people, or not contributing value to society....? What I wish for all people, kids or otherwise, is that they will have a chance to pursue their fascination with creative things, whatever medium that takes. Music, art, woodworking, gardening, dance, you name it! All those things have added so much joy to my own life, despite the severe practical & budgetary constraints that have always applied - I'm extremely grateful to my parents for encouraging my explorations....

The key to using slotted screws is using the correct size screwdriver as any gunsmith or boatbuilder will tell you. They actually are less likely to strip than phillips if you use one where the blade is square to the shaft and sized to fit the slot. Experience will teach you to get the right tools for the job, I have a large collection of screwdrivers.

One fun thing I noticed that you might not have, was you guys talk during the movements of the painting in the same way we do as paramedics moving a patient. We all know how to do it, but no matter what, there is someone "in charge" and making clear, sometimes obvious directions and EVERYTHING is verbalized. Because when you just make an assumption that the other person(s) in a move are on the same page as you, that's when mistakes happen. It was just fun hearing Julian communicate with kit in the same way I do with my partner when we're carrying a little old lady down a flight of stairs.

A Murillo would be amazing, but in the 19th century, many of his paintings - particularly the religious ones - were sanitized. Figures that looked real, with dirty feet, fingers and faces, became chocolate box images. The team and the client might have to make some tough choices and be prepared for some unexpected results. Fascinating!

I'm a librarian who dabbles in book repair. Thanks to these videos I was already well acquainted with general conservation ethics when I went to learn book conservation/repair. Imagine my delight when I learnt that washi kozo paper is a must have material in book repair. I watch this channel because I enjoy seeing a master at work. And for all the other reasons, of course. Frankly, I don't see a single reason not to watch. Books are different from such items as paintings because they are primarily utilitarian, they are data storage and retrieval devices, they have to be at full working capacity. Well, there are rare books which have to have special treatment, but they must keep their full functionality. They have to be able to withstand normal handling, most art pieces are not for handling. So we often replace some part of or all the binding when it fails, and the book doesn't lose in value. Of course It's better to keep and reinforce what can be kept when possible.
@larissanunes6913

@catherine_404
@catherine_404 2 года назад
@@larissanunes6913 it's not too difficult in general, anyone can learn to repair paper and books. It's not learnt in a day though; I know that in our conservation department an apprentice is allowed to do a book from start to finish after a year of apprenticeship. It's not a rocket science though, I think it's easier than shoemaking and repair, for example. You can do a library-grade paper repair with a spoonful of wheat flour and a teabag. I'm not joking: flour glue is a reversible safe glue, and teabag paper is great for repairing tears and minor holes, it's almost like washi paper. My teacher has an assortment of thin mending paper, and a roll of teabag paper is included. It's a skill that requires a lot of minor know-how, loads of practice, and a dash of artistic knack. Everything except minor improvement in materials was invented ages ago, century-old manuals on bookbinding are still almost completely relevant. To me, the most upsetting fact I learnt is that there almost no salvation for glue-bound books consisting of separate sheets (instead of gatherings of folded sheets) such as most paperbacks are. (If my phrases or choice of words is odd, please forgive me, English is my second language)
