Archive video by courtesy of Shepherd Group. Shepherd Construction was the main contractor for most of the buildings on what is now Heslington West, and Shepherd has been a significant contractor in creating the campus expansion at Heslington East.
The first students were admitted to the University in October 1963. Major building work took place between 1963 and 1965 to establish the first colleges and departments, finally giving the city of York a University after many centuries of waiting.
