I really don't get how injuries were a BIG point of emphasis for both Westbrook and Jokic when they won MVP despite being lower seeds and somehow this is never mentioned when building a case for Luka. Look at the 5-men line ups with most minutes for the Mavs and the other candidates, look at how many games starter players missed for the Mavs and other teams, there is MASSIVE discrepancy. But somehow, this is not a part of the narrative.

Why is MVP so important anyway? I just enjoy watching what Luka does on offense, which is pretty remarkable, especially his consistency. And then you have all those special moments, like the buzzer beating bank three, the shot to force overtime against New York, the 73 pts, the 60/20/10, and many more. He has that special extra I don't see in those other players.
Cuz history gets forgotten soon without accolades. With everything said and done if he doesnt win a ring, he will just be characterised as Euro harden. Luka would lose and those pesky analysts would win.

That last point is what bothers me the most about the "MVP". Why does team success have to weigh so heavily if the award is for a single individual. It isn't luka's fault that his teammates arent converting his passes. He's third in the league for potential passes per game, leading scorer, made gafford leading the league in field goal percentage, and the best 3-pt playmaker for teammates. He's doing literally everything right except defense, he shouldnt be disregarded because at the end of the day, his team isn't converting.
Well what value do you bring if you don't win games? If he's doing everything for them, but it's not leading to a winning record, then how valuable is he really? Basketball is not just about simple stats and if it is it's mostly about one stat: wins and losses.

I'm pretty sure if Luka were to be in SGA or Edwards spot rn (on OKC or MIN) they would win the same amount of games or more, but if is the other way around, SGA and Edwards won't be able to carry the Mavs team at all. As a Slovenian, I've been following Luka for a long time, and if someone thinks he's selfish, I can tell that it's not true. Definitely he's trying everything to help his team to win championship. This is his biggest desire.
honestly, he should avg at least 2-4 assist more pr game because of the amount of open 3's he gives to teammates and they shoot bricks. I have watched 90% of the dallas games this season, he is not a bad defender, his issue is, that when he gets frustrated, because teammates miss and do bad shit, he feels he has to do everything himself and that makes give less effort on defense. When the team is in a good flow and he doesnt have to do it all on offense (ofc kyrie does his, but rest is bad), he has more energy to defend. Sometime numbers lie. He defends all of the oppostion players, center, PF, SF, SG and PG. That might be a reason, that his defensive number can never be great. Also Dallas overall defense is pretty bad and understandable, because Jason Kidd said in an interview. "We just have to outscore the opposition", lika that aint gonna give you consistency. But Dallas end in top 5 in west, Luka will be MVP, otherwise not. It is only his team record, that really holds him back

Looking at finishing schedule, Mavs will be facing the Thunder twice, Nuggets and Heat once, Kings twice, surging Warriors 3 times. Luka should get the MVP and it's not even close. The entire Mavs team goes through Luka. Anytime he goes on the bench the Mavs start digging a hole and then Luka has to dig them out of it. Luka can't play every minute of every game. It's near impossible to play defense in the NBA without getting a foul called on yourself.
Luka isn't even close to first for on off. Mavs are a +3.6 when he's on court and -3.7 when he's off. That's a net of 7.3 Meanwhile Jokic is far and away the most impactful player in the league. The Nuggets are +10.5 when he's on and an awful -8.3 when he's off. That's a net rating of 18.8, over twice the value of Luka

He is called Luka Magic for a reason, he has that MVP calibre in him. That his team has been the 3rd most injured with the important pieces being out for so long is never discussed by the people with voting rights, but previous MVP seasons they did talk about it. I personally think MVP stands for most valuable player, so the team standings doesn't matter too much, but it seems the majority of the people voting has team standings as one of the top qualification requirements.

Luka is MVP in my eyes. He has constant ankle injury foe 2 months and had adopted his game to this fact. Despite this, he put out crazy numbers. His defence isn't brilliant, I think for this fact. Couch coaches neglect this for various reasons.

I understand we as sports fan have bias but there has to be a point where we can admit truth in peoples arguments. Luka is exciting offensively. This video could have really focused on how he does not even try on many possessions, or how his teammates have to over compensate which if you played basketball at a high level you know this eats up your energy to perform on offense. Also Luka has the Lebron effect, where teammates wait and watch and are forced into last second shots or his bailout passes when they are out of position. To understand each other we have to set the parameters. The classification is the award for the most valuable team of the season. It looks like it will be Boston. If 5 Boston players averaged 25/8/8, would one of them be the MVP? No. BECAUSE THE MVP IS AN INDIVIDUAL PRIZE. If a player hypothetically averaged 70-20-20, since he wouldn't be in PO's he wouldn't be considered for MVP? AND YET HE WOULD BE THE BEST PLAYER IN THE NBA.

BS, defense was never that important when it came to the MVP title, but efficiency and wins, so if the Mavericks finish the season at least in the 5th or 6th position, then Luka should be the MVP this season. It should be known that the Mavericks are the third team in the league with the most absences of players due to injuries. Three players did not play between 22 to 25 games each, at one point because of injuries Luka had to play even without the five most important teammates for the team and he still held the connection to the top 7 in the Western Conference. So, if they didn't have so many injuries, they would be among the top 2 or 3 in the west right now.

Great video, I agree with many things, but I don't agree that Luka's defense or the team's performance (although the instability is important) are the essential factor in him losing the award, but rather the lack of objective criteria adopted by the NBA, in addition to the Mavericks being much inferior to the other teams. If the prize is supposedly given individually, how could position in standings be so important? Following this criteria, how could Wemby be rookie of the year (or even defensive player of the year, right?). On defense: How did Nash and Curry won two awards? How did Harden got one? Luka is 8th in steals and 18th in rebounds (being the best PG in this field). How does this not count in defense? Not to mention his intelligence in readings, positioning and anticipations, which don't show up in the numbers. Personally, I think this issue of someone needing to be a "good defender" in the NBA is bs, just another way to promote the league. Normally a good defender is an athletic guy, and Luka doesn't fit the character, but neither is Jokic and he'll probably take home his third trophy this year, right? It's no surprise that there is an award for the best defender, but none called the "best offensive player in the league", this is implicitly one of the criteria for the MVP. Like you said, it's enough for him not to be horrible, and he's certainly far from that.

To me Luka is the MVP this season. Mavs are 1 win behind 6th place , but only the team rankings shouldn't be a factor here. So let's say if Luka had 38 ppg / 12 reb / 12 ast , and be as he is in rankings and the same " bad defender ", would that change anything? What if he had 40 / 15 /15 would that cut it? because 35/9/10 is pretty damn impressive. He is also 2nd only behind Steph Curry in 3 points made with 4 3's per game at 38%. Than you have he's crazy court vision and passing, he takes more difficult shots than other players and still leading in scoring. I truly don't know what his stats should have been to be worthy of the MVP award. I know he won't get it since media pushed him down and put Tatum above him. Maybe the Mavs chemistry just isn't their yet. Blame it on injuries. Long story short, all the other MVP candidates simply have better teammates and thus seeded higher. It's really a shame that the MVP is swayed by team success and not what it should be, an individual achievement.
